Re: “White Noise

Disappointing...too soft and out of touch. This play about racism was made very palatable for the majority white audience at the Berk Rep. Saw the first show on Thursday night and walked out not too long after another group of Black people walked out in disgust. Puts out a false narrative of what police brutality actually does to black men as if its just a minor hiccup in life. Horrible slavery references making it seem that slavery might not have been that bad. Why is it okay to water down the horrible things that were done to black people during slavey??? If youre having trouble grasping my point then just imagine if one were to water down what Hitler did to Jews and how he burned them alive by the millions. It would be like a play referencing the Holocaust and having the actor turn their furnace up to 80 degrees leaving the audience with the reference that maybe it wasnt soooo bad.
Suzan L.P. had Ralphs character on point when she illustrated how the normal white guy who was in a long term relationship with a black woman still had prejudice and racism deeply rooted inside of him that often came to the surface. Disproving the common assumption that one cant possibly be racist if they have a Black spouse or Black friends. But then Suzan lost it again when she allows that character to openly use the term Negro Magical Moment around his Black friend.
Suzan also followed the typical Hollywood unwritten rules that date back to when Black men in movies werent allowed to be affectionate on screen with white women. The Black character never even kisses his long term White girlfriend while the White character not only kisses his Black girlfriend but also has sex with her while also kissing and having sex with his Black friends companion.
Hope that didnt go over yall heads...just saying.
