Re: “JR Valrey Is an Agent Provocateur

I'll reserve my opinion about J.R., as it seems almost impossible to be a young, empowered, Black Journalist without feeling an almost innate need to defend your community. What I'm most interested in is why Benjamin Taylor, the self-described "freelance journalist" whose greatest ambition is "to work in the field of staging and lighting, specifically focusing on expanding knowledge and experience in the realm of sound set up, recording, mixing and management" remains so interested in someone like J.R. Why do you care if someone defends themselves or their community? What do you care if someone allows their temper, their frustration, the sometimes crippling sensation that others think your opinions or actions are somehow "less than" to lead them in their career? I get it. You're just a "freelance journalist" in the sense that you think you're witty and you have bills to pay, so you sit down at a desk and pound out, key-by-key, boring and pointless excerpts about shitty bands that return to The Gilman. You have no actual interest in journalism, in the accurate depictions that must be upheld by true journalists working to endorse truth instead of the perpetration of a backwards media. I hate to rain on your parade, Benjamin, but some of us do. I don't have any interest in praising or degrading the work that J.R. has done. Much like yourself, I don't believe that Lovelle Mixon should be regarded as some type of hood hero, although I do attempt to understand the ideology that would place such an idea in the heads of a hundred brown-skinned kids. What I do believe is that you have spent approximately seven pages trying to slander and vilify a man whose passion and dedication to his community alone far surpasses yours. Regardless of his intent, to call him an "Agent Provocateur" as you sit hammering keys in some crude attempt to denounce what he believes in is more than a mere moment of hypocrisy.
