Re: “Bad Credit Histories Scuttle Homeless Housing

Up until about 1990 most landlords and apartments did not check credit. Credit was originally only put in place to approve or decline loans, nothing more, nothing less. Because of the greed of the credit bureaus they have marketed to and expanded credit checks for getting a job, getting a rental home, insurance rates, etc. Many people lose jobs, health, etc. that cause bad credit histories. Should we continue to knock people down when they are already knocked down for the count? To me, checking credit to rent a home or to even get a job is down right ridiculous and the practice should be abolished. Yes, checking criminal history I believe is proper, but not credit reports because there are too many situations that are not the fault of the person that cause bad credit situations. Having bad credit is not a crime and everyone should be entitled to fair and equal housing, period!
