Oakland Museum has a non-whitewashed California History section. It has an extensive native Californian display, leading into a history of exploitation and genocide upon the arrival of the Spanish. The Bay Area fourth graders I take around are very aware of the dark side of colonization and express empathy for the original people. What they don't seem to understand is that there are many native Californians still alive and well, having survived through the centuries.
