Re: “City of Oakland Poised to Give Public Land to Nonprofit that Improperly Received $710,000 in County Funds

I wonder why the city of Oakland would sell land at an enormous discount to Elaine Brown's organization. Could the reason be that Brown is currently suing the city for millions?

Re: “Town Business: A New Police Headquarters. Does Oakland Have the Money?

OPD has a large backlog of cold cases and a heavy workload for homicide investigators. In addition, the crime lab is understaffed so that important functions such as fingerprint analysis are often delayed or disregarded. My impression is that most crimes in our city go unsolved. If that's true, we should use these funds to hire more crime technicians, particularly for the investigation of burglaries.

Re: “Darwin BondGraham, Ali Winston Win Prestigious George Polk Award For East Bay Express Series on Oakland Police Scandal

Reporters like BondGraham and Winston are indispensable, especially after the demise of the Oakland Tribune and the absence of beat reporters at City Hall. Democracy becomes impracticable without journalists who can devote time to researching long-form stories like theirs. What I'm wondering is, does this award come with any money?

Re: “Oakland Nonprofit Sues Coca-Cola, 'Big Soda' Lobbyist Group Over 'Following The Tobacco Playbook'

Great campaign by the Praxis Project, although given the power of advertising in the United States, it's difficult to curb the deceptiveness of ads. Free speech in this country has for the most part become the freedom to engage in commercial speech. Last year, for example, ad revenues totaled about $320 billion -- nearly 60% of what we spend on public schools K-12.

Re: “It’s Time to Call Lew Wolff’s Bluff

Good story. It amazes me that, throughout the past fourteen months of negotiations, we've never seen these considerations raised in the local media such as the San Francisco Chronicle.

Re: “BREAKING NEWS: Oakland Strikes Deals with Four Major City Unions

Employee furloughs are a concession from the taxpayers, not from the unions. They get a day off, we get less service. Or is there something wrong with my reasoning?

Re: “Ignacio Wants More Concessions from OPD

De la Fuente's plan sounds smart to me. More furloughs mean fewer layoffs, and that means we keep younger and less expensive cops who are more likely to walk the beat. Layoffs, on the other hand -- thanks to our endlessly self-interested police union -- will protect the older cops with their 200 k salaries and throw the recently-hired ones out of work. Of course, the real answer lies in raising more revenue, hiring more police.
