Re: “Recycling and Anxiety in Berkeley

I recycle diligently and see two bags of newsprint and one of mixed paper swiped every week, along with wine bottles etc and a few plastics. What they leave for the Ecology Center are the empty cans that held cat food. It burns me but I've stopped yelling at people who steal it because it began to get ugly. I hate it when big trucks come and i've tried to get their license plates but I can't see down to the street well enough so early (or late at night). I agree with the writers who say unchecked poaching contributes to the deteriorization of our city's civility and well being. Some make messes, some dump my newspapers into the regular garbage to take the paper bag so they can rob the blue bins of bottles. That's one of the worst along with broken glass when their bags break. It's so petty and yet so demoralizing.
