Re: “Recycling and Anxiety in Berkeley

I live in Oakland and this is a weekly struggle for me. At one time, I was one of those people who would sigh and just let it go when the scavengers went after the recycling when it was on the street. At one point, we started holding the recycling back so we could collect the fees but, hey, it's a pain and I'd rather just let the folks from Waste Management take it anyway.

Here's what sends me over the edge: having my recycling poached but also having my garbage bags torn open and the refuse dumped in my cans. At least once a week I'm confronting scavengers (who come midday in our neighborhood) who go after the cans before they hit the street. As far as I'm concerned, it's trespassing (we have signs posted) and I've also had people up in the backyard looking for stuff. We've asked the landlord to build a bin that we can roll our cans into and hopefully we'll get that and a fence.

In the meantime, I'm tired of the disrespect and the sheer audacity of people who think they have every right to come up on the property because they want something.
