Re: “Tuesday Must Reads: Oakland Unions Denounce Quan’s Proposal; DeSaulnier Schedules Hearing on Bay Bridge Bolt Scandal

Craig - I don't think there are any Green Party members on the Oakland City Council; the only Green Party candidate that I know of who ran, Don McLeay, lost to Dan Kalb for District 1.

Re: “As Mama Buzz Cafe Struggles, Artists Reach Out to Help

Mama Buzz should consider using Kickstarter ( to get funds from the community for this project. Home Room on 40th St near Shafter is opening up in about a month or so after getting funds through a Kickstarter project. If Home Room can get the funding from the community to start up a completely new business, then surely Mama Buzz can get the funding to continue an existing and well-loved business.

Re: “The New Parkway Sets Its Sights off Park Blvd.

From someone living in the Temescal neighborhood, I would be thrilled to see not only the abandoned Omni get put back to use, but also to get a theater in the neighborhood that would draw folks from miles around. It would be a major win for the neighborhood. I am very sorry for Eastlake's loss but that landlord sounds like a jerk; the New Parkway folks deserve a more reasonable landlord.

Re: “Slap Hitter: Why Nobody's Coming to See the A's

What gets a fan to a ballgame? A beautiful park, and a dramatic approach. I took my dad to see a Giants game by taking the ferry over. It was so much fun to get across the bay that way and get dropped off right at the ballpark. The SF park itself is of course gorgeous with lovely views. Contrast that with getting to the A's park, by way of dirty and pothole-ridden 880 (admittedly there is BART which would probably be nicer), with an old-looking standard industrial park with no views. This isn't rocket science guys. AT&T Park dramatically upped the Bay Area standards for parks, and the Coliseum just looks like a pit ever since. Build us a beautiful urban-community park downtown with views near all the new great restaurants and theaters, and people will come.

Re: “Now Is the Time to Buy an Oakland Condo

There's also the monthly HOA dues, which can run $400 a month or more. I'm renting a house in Temescal for $1700 with a huge yard, and I'm planting a huge vegetable garden for the 2nd year in a row that will give us dried and frozen veggies for a year. I can step outside my back door to birds, flowers, trees, cats and squirrels. The only thing you can step outside to from a condo is your front step or the tiny 10-sq-ft patio surrounded by other concrete buildings. Yeah, that sounds REAL appetizing. You couldn't pay me to buy a condo.
