Re: “Arreguin Sees the Light on the Density

Charlie Pine, I live in downtown Oakland right next to the Union Pacific tracks and walk to my office in downtown Oakland or take the bus. When I go to SF, I can take the ferry or quickly get to BART. My car is used only a few times a month for business trips. More than a few of the folks who live and/or work in my building commute by bike. Time to recognize that land is a scarce resource.

Re: “Who is Eric Swalwell Anyway? (And Why Does He Think He Can Be President?)

Eric is fine as a Congressmember but he needs to wait a few years before making a move like this. He doesn't have the creds to be on the top of the ticket and doesn't meet the necessary demographic quals for 2020 (neither female nor a person of color). Give it up, Eric, and save your money.

Re: “Fixing Oakland’s Death Traps

These building likely met Building Code requirements at the time they were built, as did all of those buildings in the SF Marina District that collapsed during Loma Prieta. Berkeley and SF both have rent control and were able to address this problem. With increased property values in Oakland, especially in the Lake Merritt area and West Oakland where most of these structures are located, no reason why owners here shouldn't do the same. These improvements will increase value of structures and can probably be depreciated.

Re: “Oakland’s Tuff Shed Program, by the Numbers

Yes, everyone should have a real home in which to live but what do we do in the meantime? Let them stay in the street? I am not sure what you mean by "mini homes". Tuffsheds with insulation, such as the ones the City is installing, may not include plumbing and other utilities but these services are being provided fof the tuff shed residents as well. Permanent housing, even what you call "mini-homes" or micro-units, requires land, which is very expensive in most of the Bay Area these days, and the cost of labor and construction is extremely high as well. Voters are beginning to approve housing bonds that will help but the need is overwhelming and so is the cost so, I ask again, what is your solution in the meantime??

Re: “Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf Defends Record Against Five Challengers

I would like to hear some specifics from Brooks and Price about what they would do to ensure that all Oakland residents benefit from growth and development in Oakland.

Re: “Why Hasn’t Oakland Sued the NFL Yet?

I agree with Gary Patton and others who think that pursuing litigation would be throwing more money into a futile effort to keep the Raiders in Oakland. Time for them to leave for good!

Re: “Uber Tax and Mansion Tax Take One Step Closer Toward Oakland's November Ballot

I usually tip Uber/Lyft drivers $5/ride based on a typical $20 trip. The tax will probably mean that drivers get lower tips. Why aren't Uber and Lyft paying a business tax based on revenues earned in Oakland as other service businesses (including my own) are required to do??
