Re: “Oakland’s Tuff Shed Program, by the Numbers

Yes, everyone should have a real home in which to live but what do we do in the meantime? Let them stay in the street? I am not sure what you mean by "mini homes". Tuffsheds with insulation, such as the ones the City is installing, may not include plumbing and other utilities but these services are being provided fof the tuff shed residents as well. Permanent housing, even what you call "mini-homes" or micro-units, requires land, which is very expensive in most of the Bay Area these days, and the cost of labor and construction is extremely high as well. Voters are beginning to approve housing bonds that will help but the need is overwhelming and so is the cost so, I ask again, what is your solution in the meantime??

Re: “Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf Defends Record Against Five Challengers

I would like to hear some specifics from Brooks and Price about what they would do to ensure that all Oakland residents benefit from growth and development in Oakland.

Re: “Why Hasn’t Oakland Sued the NFL Yet?

I agree with Gary Patton and others who think that pursuing litigation would be throwing more money into a futile effort to keep the Raiders in Oakland. Time for them to leave for good!

Re: “Uber Tax and Mansion Tax Take One Step Closer Toward Oakland's November Ballot

I usually tip Uber/Lyft drivers $5/ride based on a typical $20 trip. The tax will probably mean that drivers get lower tips. Why aren't Uber and Lyft paying a business tax based on revenues earned in Oakland as other service businesses (including my own) are required to do??

Re: “Will Oakland Adopt a Mansion Tax?

Another approach that would could more effectively address the issues of gentrification and displacement would be a speculative gains tax imposed at the time of sale on properties that have been acquired and resold within a one or two year period. Consider what effect this might have had on Deutsche Bank, which acquired and then resold about 1,000 foreclosed homes in Oakland. Many of them when to investors looking for a quick buck who then "flipped" the properties.

Re: “Supporter of Controversial Israeli Settlements Would Benefit from Exclusive Oakland Public Land Deal

The City should be making decisions on investments and property deals based on benefits returned to Oakland residents and to the City. There is no consensus among Oakland residents and taxpayers on BDS and Israel's settlement policies. I do not support the policies of the current Israeli administration including its settlement policies and I think David Horowitz, one of the recipients of Zimmerman's largesse, is despicable. Nevertheless, if evaluating every City decision based on the political views of the parties we may be on a very slippery slope.

Re: “A Second Transbay Link Is Inevitable — but Will It Be Equitable?

Oakland is a "lawless abandoned zone"? When did Bruce last look around Oakland? There's residential development underway in many parts of Oakland, crime rates are down, and the population citywide is higher than ever. The problem is that the increase in real estate prices is leaving many existing residents "out in the cold".
