Re: “42 Things You Absolutely Must Do in the East Bay this Summer

How could you leave out the world-class UC Botanical Garden? It's on Centennial Drive between LHS and the football stadium. It has one of the world's largest collections of plants, about 12,000 species. A wonderful peaceful place, with views of the Golden Gate.

Re: “Waste: The Dark Side of the New Coffee Craze

I was at CVS today and saw fine wire mesh cups made to use in these machines, that can be used over and over again. Go for it! (I'm a tea drinker and compost the bags.)

Re: “The Lost Runner

How about carrying a small daypack with food, water, jacket and hat, gloves, socks, GPS with extra batteries, phone? The extra weight would help with conditioning. And run when it's light!

Also it seems to me like he might have ADHD--impulsiveness, lack of planning. Might want to check that out.

Re: “It's Not Your Mother's GOP Anymore

It hasn't been my mother's GOP for a very long time... my mother, who was born in 1912 and died two years ago at 95, was a lifelong Republican (the moderate type) until George the First ran in 1988. He moved the party so far to the right, thanks at least in part to his son W. who was running the evangelical side of the campaign, that my mother started voting Democratic. She was particularly incensed about abortion rights, having lived most of her life before Roe v. Wade and knowing women who had botched illegal abortions. She proudly voted for Clinton, twice, then Kerry and Gore, and I'll bet if she had been alive last year, she would have even more proudly voted for Obama.

The Republicans moved right, far right, and most of their voters stayed in the middle. What's left in the party is the loony wingnut fringe. These folks at the town halls are scary. I recommend E.J. Dionne's Aug. 20 column in the Wash. Post: Leave the Guns at Home.

Re: “The Subtext of Health Care Reform

Sorry, you hit my language pet peeve. "Reticent" is not a synonym for "reluctant"! Reticent means quiet, reserved, reluctant to speak. This error is rampant these days.

Re: “You're Not an Environmentalist If You're Also a NIMBY

Oaksterguy, think before you write. "Long commutes to stores" in Walnut Creek? Have you been to WC lately? It has one of the largest (and most pleasant) shopping areas in the Bay Area. And not all high-end, either.
Also I think the crime issue is due to poor policing strategies and a weak social safety net, not density. Density could even improve the crime situation. Look at Manhattan--one of the lowest crime rates of any large city in the US.
