Re: “The Return to Public Schools

While the Berg children can attend Oakland Tech and of course continue on to college, fact is they were going to go to college in any case as their parent's can afford $40K a year tuition. It's basically that simple.

Let's not be blindsided by reality. Oakland public schools, mostly above 5th grade, are dismal ( I was fortunate that my 2 childern were able to avoid these schools). Dropout rates are very high, bullying and crime in and around some of the schools is atrocious, the Oakland School Board and administration has a culture of corruption and ineptitude (thinking about ebonics here). I don't know all the solutions, it is partly economic but fact is you can teach children good language, mathematics and thinking skills on a truly minimal budget. (No fancy computers are needed to learn basics we seem to forget). The will to learn is simply lacking in many homes. Many of the children who actually graduate from Oakland high schools are very poorly prepared for college or a job. Many can barely speak English without use of slang and this inability to express ideas and thoughts is a burden for their life. The lack of a mathematics requirement to at least meet simple number manipulation skills is sad (no you dont need a calculator to calculate a square root!).

The mention above of the "military" style charter school is interesting in that this is at least one way to accomplish some education. OUSD need to get back to basics. It needs a cultural change and this is the hardest. In a community with a culture of crime and little education until the pockets of crime and poverty are broken up or gone our community will suffer.

Oakland Resident for 30 years and missing JB as mayor. RD is an unmitigated disaster as Mayor I might add.

Re: “Will the PUC Step in to Prevent AT&T Rate Hikes?

ATT is the current name for Pac Bell, SBC and now ATT. Their mantra is simple, do EVERYthing to squash competition, shift as many costs as possiblle to "regulated" costs to show how expensive is is to maintain those "expensive" land lines and raise rates with abandon.

Oh one other thing, if the government illegally ask us to tap phone without a warrant, as long as we are paid handsomly we will do it and of course when sued (thanks EFF) insist on immunity from Congress. The only person I can see who can prevent this immuinity from occurirng is Nancy Pelosi. Alas she can be purchased also. ATT's liabiliy for this illegal activity could be more than the value of their company.

Oh we have the best telecom service in the world...well actually we dont any more.

If Judge Greene could just see you now
