Re: “Is Oakland Really Going to Cut Pot Taxes This Time?

Yet again, the "couneliliare" screwed up trying to get every penny so they could wast them for city beautification (see the rebuild around lake merrit that ran for nearly six years) and other "civic pride" boondoggles.

sigh

Re: “The Stink in East Oakland

So let's see here... We have a heavy industry that is now and has been operating for quite some time (foundries don't just spring up over night) lawfully. It's in a long term industrial district. It has been industrial for a VERY long time. It's one of the few operations in Oakland that provides good jobs at decent wages. It recycles materials for use in it's processes.

And someone who lives at a minimum of 3 (direct line of sight to the hills) miles away is complaining of the smell? I live within that range, and I gotta tell ya, I have NEVER known it was even there!

Somethings smells here... And I don't think it's the foundry.

And we "hope" something green and better will come along if we run them out of town?! Yeah... Someone will invest to bring that to town when somewhere down the road they'll get run out too.

Re: “Measure to Reform Oakland Police Commission in the Works

I would think that ANYTHING that needs to be "steer the proposal through the legislative process in quick order" should bew viewed witha jaundiced eye... But this is the Council President's modus operandi... Bring things up as late as possible and jam them through as "urgent"

Other reports on the Kinkade fire seems to indicate PGE cut the power before the outbreak

Re: “Why Do Oakland Police Dismiss So Many Rape Cases?

Could it be, Mary, that you have taken over the old EBX mantle of throwing innuendo without ANY hard evidence? Your article clearly outlines many reasons that ODP, with limited resources, faced with less than "enthusiastic" victim cooperation, might opt to close the case. Even the people right next to the victims acknowledge the difficulty in successfully prosecuting rape cases and a tendency for victims to "get over it" rather to live in the event.

ANY time "statistics" (simple "nose counts" most of the time) are applied as a metric in this type of thing (and yes rape IS a serious issue), playing the metric happens. But real math is a lot harder than just clicking off counts and scolding when you don't like how they add up.

Re: “Homeless Crackdown by Caltrans Sparks Dialogue in Berkeley

Why do those in positions of "power" continue doing the same things over and over, while expecting different results?

The answer is a lack of tax dollars to do it... The area has LOT's of people "doing their own thing"... But they pay nothing to support the infrastructure they use.

When I was a kid, I had a MUCH younger sibling who looked at my parents when there was something they wanted and told them to just "write" some (write a check). The very young tend to do things this way.

As to the presented example? Well, THERE are programs for seniors that would house her. I bet there are rules she doesn't want to comply with. I come out of the streets. It's what I've seen with my own two eyes.

Re: “Friday's Briefing: Bay Commission has plan to help stave off rising seas; Cal cheerleader files suit for untreated concussions

How exactly does a educational institution "force" someone to continue cheerleading?! Reading the article is sure looks like she made a deliberate choice... Oh wait, it's Berkeley and so someone ELSE is responsible for your choices
