Re: “Outsourcing Perpetuates Economic Inequality

To use a hackneyed and all too apropos phrase, the bottom line is the bottom line. And we have MBAs running things.

MBAs who have been taught in business schools that to function at maximum efficiency, focus on your core strengths and get someone else to do those thing that are outside them.

Those two words, "maximum efficiency", are probably THE most toxic pair in the English language. Right along with "there is always room for improvement". Between them we have bought into a society where there IS no good enough in anything. Better! Faster! Stronger!

At the most basic levels, they have driven the student debt crises "Gotta have the BEST education to get the BEST job to make the MOST money in my lifetime at ANY price". Does "Get my kids into the BEST school no matter what!" Sound at all familiar?

Outsourcing is just the most visible symptom of the disease. Figure this one out and a whole range of things fall away.

Of course if we do... UC (and it's scolding graduates) may be out of business.

Re: “Wednesday's Briefing: EBMUD approves water rate increases: Still no budget deal in Oakland

Interesting edit on the Councilman's comment. For thos who don't visit the article, he was referring to Ms Kaplans mess.

While we're calling for audits, how about we audit Ms Kaplan to see who is funding her and who she in turn funds?

Re: “Monday's Briefing: Kaplan's budget proposal includes cutting Department of Transportation

Figure Kaplan wants to stop the road repairs and cut law enforcement.

She like the Oakland Wild West

Re: “Recycling's Sword of Damocles

So if I read this right, "non-profits" have been knowingly cheating all along; while waggling fingers, scolding us to all do our parts... Doing NOTHING but scold, not looking into what can or should be done about the non-recyclables?

"The recycling industry is in a very difficult situation financially right now," Bourque said. "But hopefully a lot of really exciting innovation is going to come out of that."

The innovation SHOULD have come out the industry long ago.

I dislike left-wing puritans maybe more than the right-wing flavor... We at least know what kinds of greedy, venal nonsense right wing type is up to and we can push back.

Re: “Monday's Briefing: Measles at Berkeley Bowl; Richmond cop involved in Celeste Guap scandal got his job back

A Richmond cop... Well, it's behind a paywall so all we have is the sensational title... The old EBX is back!

Re: “Staffing Versus Services in Oakland

Staffing vs services? What kind of blather is that!? It takes staffing to provide services. Yes, contractors come and go and their protections are less. That doesn't mean the city shouldn't use them.

There is an drive to push kids into college at tax payer expense... Whether it is appropriate or not; Whether the measure passed or not. This something that won't even begin to pay off for more that twenty years, but no job training for teens or adults. That kind of program would pay the job candidates and the city in two to three years. This is the kind of thinking that has resulted in the biggest debt crisis (student loans) since the sub-prime lending fiasco and would simply rope more victims in.

Businesses want to be in Oakland. Why does the city need a Business Assistance Center? Perhaps an oversight center to avoid abuses but I think businesses WANT to be here.

Perhaps certain council members need to assist businesses by not encouraging the extortionist/activists/shock troops that have ridden roughshod over the needs of the city for a long time.

The plain and simple facts is that some council member have been wasting city funds for a very long time on "feel good, bread a circuses" projects. All that needs to be done to see this is to look at the Lake Merrit construction project that is less than three miles of roadway and construction has been underway for over six years and still not done... And that's just one!

Oakland has hosted sports for decades and NEVER begun to break even on that. In the case of the Raiders alone, city losses to the tune of approximately million dollars a year (seven million in; eight million in costs). That's a LOT of road bed. The Warriors had to be sued to recoup costs for their victory celebration recently.... Great community members, yes?

Re: “Planners Look to Enhance Transit on San Pablo Avenue

Mitchell, I'd suggest that you look at the study on the ACTUAL carbon footprint of battery EVs done in Germany. As a result of where the electricity for those BEVs come from it's actually higher than internal combustion engines!

Until we get massive renewables (and individual/residential solar really only works in low density housing areas... See recent Berkeley complaints due to new high density builds shading residential solar) We have a serious problem with BEVs.

Yes, it feels good and looks easy. If it looks too good to be true, remember, it is.
