Re: “Another Voice for Teachers

When I was a union member (admittedly long ago and not the teachers union), my monthy dues were like 25 a month. Thousands? I guess it's possible, but somehow I doubt that. Anyone know the true figure?

Re: “After Three Years, Oakland Police Release Body-Camera Video of Demouria Hogg Shooting

As I recall the car had been reported involved in a violent crime within the past 24 hours and was being looked for.

Now we find and not "just" an unconscious man in that car. But was an unconscious man with a weapon in plain view and in reach.

Guns DO tend to have a BIT more reach than cameras... That's why people tend to be EXTREMELY cautious about them in uncertain situations.

It's an odds on bet, someone was getting shot in this situation. It was just a question of who.

Re: “Berkeley Reconsiders Controversial Twitter Tactic

Tony,

Doxxing: As younger people slur and gliss words... documenting. Getting the "docs" on... doxxing.

Woke: I'm kewl - I'm awake and aware, but I also want to show I'm not part of "the man's establishment" (remember hippies... I Do).

And I'm 60.

Re: “Eviction Protections Could Be Extended to Thousands More Oakland Homes Through Proposed Ballot Measure

Hey Cynthia... Can I have a chunk of your paycheck for doing nothing? You seem willing to volunteers other money. Why not yours too?

Re: “Berkeley Reconsiders Controversial Twitter Tactic

The city of Berkeley *might* want to look into what happened to the operators of mugshots.com.

I think the city manager MAY have run afoul of the law.

Re: “Oakland Police Consider Less Intrusive Search Policy

Yet again, DBG does NO actual research. This is my surprised face:

"Most people on probation and parole have no Fourth Amendment rights"

Having been on supervised felony probation, I can state that what people on probation and/or parole have is a four way search clause to their probation/parole agreement.

NOTE: the word agreement.

If they want probation and/or parole, they agree to this clause. Judges routinely impose upon defendants convicted by guilty plea of drug or other crimes involving possession of illicit or stolen things, the condition that they voluntarily submit to a police search, without a warrant, any time of the day or night, in their homes, cars, or of their person, without probable cause.

NOTE: The words convicted. Yes, I DO understand plea agreements are not ideal.

They DO have the right to refuse to agree to this... And to then be/continue incarceration. It's a choice. Not a good one, but it IS a choice.

The youth questioning the Chief may be aware that if they are on probation and engaged in activity that attracts law enforcement attention, they are involved in what may be an automatic probation violation. In fact, if they are on probation or know someone who is, they are well aware of this and the question itself is disingenuous.

And the question is asked no matter WHAT color one is. I know of my own personal experience. The general public may not be aware of this.

Every one of my experiences with Oakland or ANY other law enforcement officer has been very stilted, legalistic and formal. Do I like it? No. Do I have answers I'm happy with? Again, no.

Bail isn't an issue now (yes, I know the bondsmen are fighting that). The public defenders office is overloaded and often less than effective, but it DOES exist. The article implies NO representation is available. Again, a half truth of the kind we've become all too familiar with both here and in our larger society.

sigh.

Re: “Richmond Mayor and Sons Profiting from Cannabis Compliance Push

I can't say I'm a fan of Mr Butt, and I've been one of his constituents.

I do have to say this looks a whole lot less unlawful than certain currently sitting Oakland City Council members activities.
