Re: “Why Aren't There More Latinx Nights in Oakland?

Yeah. I put this all on the venues.
No matter the genre, all parties can fail. The venues should take 2-3 chances on every party. New parties should start monthly on a weeknight, and if they are successful, either be offered a weekend monthly or take their party elsewhere.

Some parties may need more than 2-3 tries to get off the ground. Word of mouth still works. And venues should know which parties will need more than 2-3 tries to marinate into something that will last.

If you're a Latinx DJ or promoter, please, please keep trying. Last year, last month, last week might not have been the time for your party to jump off. But this month, or next, it could be CRACKIN'.

Re: “Overland Country Bar and World Ground Cafe Shut Their Doors

Oh, no!!!!!!! Starved for years without a country bar and music spot and now after a couple of years it's gone. Sad loss for us country music fans and Oakland. I'll be dead before another one comes to town.

Re: “Best Landlord History Lesson: Andrew Mousalimas

Gabrielle:

Great appreciation of Andy. When I moved to the Piedmont Avenue Oakland in 1975 Andy and Mary were running the 1st Tuesday Club at the Kings X. It was organized by Nick Petris (Oakland Senator from 1966 1996 pre term limits) district staff. I got invited by Bruce Black, a long time Democratic activist and log time member of the Oakland Planning Commission in the early 1980s. In the days before e-mail it was a time for democratic electeds (and a few activists) to get together and return phone calls. By that time I started going, Mary had stopped running the kitchen at the Kings X every day, but she served lunch for the 1st Tuesday Club. Andy and Mary were great and the 1st Tuesday Club gave people a chance to talk fact to face at least once a month.

Re: “Study: Higher Minimum Wage and Other Progressive Policies Have Not Hurt Economic Growth in California

And of all things coming from one of the most liberal institutions in the country. Give it a rest as to what comes out of the UC System and the progressive agenda.

Re: “Hasta Muerte Serves Coffee with a Side of Resistance

I hope there are no neighborhood watch meetings. They dont build or celebrate community. In areas with changing demographics, they feel as divisive as crime itself to long time locals.

Re: “Justice League Is a Cheap-Looking Spectacle

This isn't a review... This is a hit piece. And that's coming from someone who feels Captain America: The Winter Soldier is pound for pound the best cinematic comic movie to date. Seriously... THIS reviewer was looking to hate this film. Wow...

Re: “Why Aren't There More Latinx Nights in Oakland?

To me, Oakland has always been about Safety. Especially with the Ladies!

If you notice, the only Latino parties that get packed are the venues [shows and concerts]. It's crowded, well lit, parking available and plenty of security. I believe Ladies feel safe there!

The last time I went to Oakland's bars, the ratio of guys to ladies was about 3 to 1. And ... the front doors of a bar I was at .... had to be closed temporarily, due to a shooting across the street.

Oakland still has that reputation!

Re: “Study: Higher Minimum Wage and Other Progressive Policies Have Not Hurt Economic Growth in California

Well "a study" is just that. While the study might have some merit the author seems to have an agenda in conducting this study so why not publish it in a peer reviewed economics journal? Let other determine if the basis of the claims made has any statistical or useful merit? Then make fuss about it!

Re: “New Oakland Fire Chief: City Needs to Hire More Firefighters and Inspectors

I'm trying to come up with a clever phrase for Mayor Schaaf to use regarding public safety, especially fire safety (the other kind--having to dodge flying lead--is probably not worth the bother).

How about "Oakland loves to shout 'fire' everywhere because we really care."

A clever phrase can work much more effectively than actually solving a problem. Especially in Oakland.

Re: “New Ballpark Could Devastate Lake Merritt's Birds

Sacrificing the Lake, it's wildlife and the neighborhoods around it for the gain of a privately held business is horribly wrong. The whole idea is built on the assumption that folks will be coming to games from downtown when the majority of fans come from elsewhere in the Bay Area. This location is wrong for the environment, the neighborhood, the college, and Oakland.

Re: “The Laney College Opposition

Thinking that the ballpark won't kill Laney off and that all the fans will suddenly take public transport to get there and we Oaklanders won't be paying for any of the improvements demanded of the infrastructure is blindness caused by dollar signs. Build out the Coliseum site with a great, human scale, attractive ballpark, help create a support community around that. Ballparks do not need to be superimposed on an existing neighborhood.

Re: “Justice League Is a Cheap-Looking Spectacle

This is an idiotic review. The movie is fun and exciting. Not as good as the recent Marvel movies, clearly, but much better than past DC efforts and headed in the right direction. Affleck and Cavil were good as well as Gadot and Ezra Miller. The problem was the dialogue, angst for Cyborg and Aquaman, who were played by mediocre actors. Nolan damaged the DC franchise with too much pretentious style and Zack Snyder is a so-so director. Warners made a huge mistake

Re: “Justice League Is a Cheap-Looking Spectacle

Well, you're right about showing the audience contempt... only that it didn't come from the movie, but the critic who can easily state that fans will convince themselves they are watching a good movie ...

Only if I could do the same about reading a review...

Re: “Citing Possible School Closures and Fiscal Problems, Oakland School Board Denies New Charter School Petition

The student on the board has been poorly trained in Public School governance. Not really her fault; the adults do not seem to understand their jobs either. The Board members may not legally "vote against the proposal out of philosophical opposition to charters." The Board's role is to see that the laws governing public schools are implemented fairly, consistently, and without bias and/or discrimination. They are NOT legislators. Charter law is clear and OUSD staff knows that this school meets all requirements. Too bad our Bd of Ed is more interested in grandstanding than good governance.
