Re: “Group Calls for Oakland Animal Services to Lower Euthanasia Rate, But Administrators and Allies Say Shelter is Best it’s Been in Years

I pull dogs from OAS for rescue's and have seen a huge improvement in the dogs from OAS coming out of the shelter in much better condition during Rebecca Katz' tenure at OAS. 3-5 years ago, almost every dog I pulled from OAS was very sick with kennel cough, Giardia, pneumonia and worse - it was awful. The last year has gotten so much better, almost every dog I pull has been healthy. Last weekend I helped pull 24 dogs to go on transport up to Embrace a Discarded Animal Society - in Washington and none of the dogs were sick. That would have never been the case 3-4 years ago.

I also foster for the shelter and the last two dogs I fostered were spayed /neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped by the shelter vet, prior to coming to my home. This also never used to be the case.

In my opinion, while the shelter is still not perfect, it's much better than it has ever been in the past 7 years that I have been involved with them. The entire management team and all of the current volunteers seem very committed to doing right by the animals and improving the conditions for the animals while they are in their care. This is just my humble opinion, but I've seen vast improvements in the last 2-3 years.

Re: “Oakland Rallies Around Owner of Henry's Gallery Café, Who Recently Lost His Business and Life's Savings

So... It seems EBX is ONLY concerned by wrong doing by the OPD, not wrongs done IO the community BY the community. Nor, it would seem, is the city council the EBX sockpuppets for.

In this same "issue" I see one member of the council is up for corruption and EBX is ONLY concerned about the amount needed for the defense.

Not a word from EBX on the swarm attacks or general lawlessness in the streets of Oakland.

VERY community oriented EBX.

Re: “Black Oakland Leaders Criticize Mayor and Police Chief for 'Lack of Control' Over Police Department

This is typical of the terribly biased reporting of Darwin Bond-Graham, Ali Winston, and the East Bay Express in general. "The Oakland police also didn't immediately respond to a request for more information about the incident" is the extent of their investigation into the OPD's version of what happened, especially regarding the Foothill incident, yet the case for the viewpoint expressed in the letter is bolstered by references to the Stanford study, previous poor behavior on the part of OPD, and quotes from multiple sources who support the aims of the letter.

When it comes to presenting a viewpoint which Bond-Graham and the EBX do not agree with, the extent of their effort is asking the OPD PIO for an "immediate" comment and then throwing up their hands and giving up.

Strange how the EBX has so many sources inside the department when it comes to reporting on scandalous material, but they can't be bothered to do more than a perfunctory press inquiry when it comes to looking for a side of the story that may contradict the radical agenda for which the EBX is the unabashed mouthpiece.

Re: “East Bay Paratransit Bus System Leaves Drivers Broke and Riders Often Stranded

I worked at the Alta Bates campus in berkeley about 7-10 years ago. This was the same at that time. Obviously there needs to be changes made, but nothing is going to happen anytime soon. Until the owners are ready to make the changes, unfortunately these problems will not get addressed. SMH I feel so sorry for the people who have to depend on these agencies to get where they need to go. Maybe an agency needs to supply thr people who need transport, vouchers for Lyft..I bet they would get better service!

Re: “Oakland Councilmember McElhaney Racks Up $58,000 in Debt Defending Herself in Ethics Case

No surprise here. Zach Wasserman and Greg McConnell are two people who make the short list of savory characters intertwined in backroom dealing in Oakland politics for the last 20 years. The question of whether they are doing the right thing is never the issue. That is evidenced by their representation of people like Tagami and Patel, who have disdain for the rules in favor of their own financial interests. They are only priming the Council member in advance of the next questionable deal they will undoubtedly be a part of. There is no doubt that in this case, McElheney's actions related to a project in her neighborhood clearly violated conflict of interest laws and were both unethical and illegal. It is a good sign that only some of the usual suspects would actually give her money to defend a very weak position. She should either accept the consequences of her actions or pay for her misguided legal defense out of her own pocket. Maybe next time she and other council members will think twice about violating conflict of interest laws.

Re: “Black Oakland Leaders Criticize Mayor and Police Chief for 'Lack of Control' Over Police Department

My question for these "community leaders" is get their comments on the recent spate of swam attacks perpetrated in a number of areas in the community and on about the past "indiscretions" of seemingly upstanding members of the community that came to light in the wash of the assassination of a journalist investigating what they community well knew was going on... And either overlooked or were afraid to report. Is the community not at least equally at risk from those types of activity or should it simply be overlooked?

I agree, OPD should have immediately taken into custody the individual on Las Vegas Avenue when the first incident was reported... But they didn't take him into custody after he threatened a white man either or opened fire.

I doubt seriously this had anything to do with race and is more indicative of a complete breakdown of OPD.

I was completely amazed at the incident several months ago in which an individual advanced on on foot on a crashed OPD vehicle and opened fire on the vehicle and the officer inside. Should we also call that racially motivated? Where were the calls for action of these community leaders in the wake of this?

Reporting of this type by EBX in support of these political stunts by members of the the council is equally an indication of breakdown in the integrity of the fourth estate, a failure to hold ALL responsible parties to account, utterly reprehensible and shows a general lack of due diligence on the part of "award winning" writers.

Re: “What East Bay Trivia Nights Say About Our Collective Knowledge (or Lack Thereof) of Non-White History and Culture

Well, duh, Cutty Sark.
I think you need to be a certain age to know that one, not a certain color.
If you want diversity in your trivia, come to the THERE reading series at the Octopus Literary Salon on the third Friday of each month. Our LitQuiz is always a balanced mix of questions about authors and books, including men, women, living, dead, of all races, colors, etc. I try really, really hard to mix the current and the classic. And our lineup of readers is as diverse as they come. Mostly women, many of color. I'm often the only straight white guy on the bill. But most importantly, it's fun. Check us out!
One more point: you need diversity on your team, too, if you want to have an enjoyable trivia night. A team of all white guys in their 50s probably won't get any of the hiphop questions. A team of all miillennials of color probably won't ace a test given by a white guy of 50.

Re: “Black Oakland Leaders Criticize Mayor and Police Chief for 'Lack of Control' Over Police Department

This 'open letter' is nothing more than a political stunt to make it appear as though Desley Brooks and Keith Carson are active in addressing the issues in Oakland.

Police misconduct in Oakland is not a new issue and we all know it well. Desley Brooks has been a councilmember for 15 years so why waste her precious time on it?

Perhaps, it's because Councilmember Brooks will be running for re-election in 2018. And, she will run because she is self-serving and Oakland is the perfect place to do absolutely nothing and not be held accountable.

Keith Carson is a mystery. But, several projects he is associated with in addition to his fellow Board of Supervisors are questionable according to the 2016-2017 Alameda County Grand Jury Final Report.

Don't be distracted with this 'open letter' nonsense.

Re: “Oakland Looks to Close Owner Move-In and Occupancy Loopholes, Reduce Evictions and Harmful Rent Increases

Jeff, are you responding as a statistician, a union leader whose mission supports maximum rent control and tenant protections, or as the head lobbyist for East Bay Housing Organization? Many do not know that EBHO's affordable housing properties are exempt from all the ordinances and rent increase caps you so passionately state are needed. We know that the restrictions you support are aimed at private property owners, and small ones at that, who have older buildings. East Rental Housing Association did pull ALL the county eviction records for several years in Northern Alameda County. Of those, Oakland was 95% of the total evictions filed, 90% of those were non-payment of rent, and close to 30 % of the evictions were from the non-profit housing developers you state are the empathetic ones to the lower income individual's plight. Renters paying 30-50% of income in the Bay Area is not a knew phenomenon, in fact it is the story for all large cities in CA. If you want to live in a hi-demand area that has a limited supply, and there are major cost barriers to new construction, this is the result. And the 50% scenario may only apply to NEW residents. If you have been in your rent-controlled apt for more than 3 years, you are below the rent average. If you want to lower that income/ rent percentage there are many cities that can accommodate, one just needs to move east. You move where you can afford to live, that is not a crazy thought.

Re: “East Bay Paratransit Bus System Leaves Drivers Broke and Riders Often Stranded

A neighbor in my building needs kidney dialysis 3X a week. She can barely walk to get to the front door of our building, much less hike to bus stops and walk from bus stops to her dialysis clinic. Increasingly, however, she ends up sitting in our lobby for an hour or more and then gets a call from AC Paratransit telling her no paratransit bus is going to show up. By this time, she is late for her appointment but still needs the dialysis so she suffers her way to a bus stop and from the bus stop to her clinic. She reports this is becoming almost the norm, that more and more she just gets told, after waiting a very long time, that the bus aint coming.

It does seem peculiar to me that a foreign company is not only managing this local, publicly funded service but that this company is doing such an inadequate job. The workers deserve a living wage and affordable health care, as drivers for other public transit systems receive, and the riders deserve an operating system that picks them up within reasonable wait times. Shame shame shame on the folks who outsourced this and did not negotiate meaningful public oversight of how the public money is spent.
