Re: “Why Aren't There More Latinx Nights in Oakland?

I would really like more diversity in the sound. Salsa is fine, but how about incorporating Mexican and Central American sounds - you know - reflective of the music of the majority of Latinos who live in the bay area. Salsa nights always turn into a very Americanized performative sport anyways.

Re: “Bedtime for the Night Light Means a New Day for the Elbo Room

"They installed custom brass-tacked leather chairs, lit the place with bare-filament bulbs, and stuffed the cocktail menu with whiskey."

Whiskey stingily poured from a jigger and sold at $15/drink in a plastic cup. No doubt to pay for the fancy chairs.

Pro tip- if you are going to charge a fortune for the drinks, at least give a good pour into a decent glass. Bars make their money on liquor sales, no?

Well, charging too much for a crappy pour is a good way to not make money. Because while you'll make $13 profit on the first drink, you won't be making any more, because I won't feel compelled to buy a second, or return at any point in the future to buy more.

Hell, for the price of two drinks, I'd rather just buy the bottle and have friends come over.

Re: “On the Phenomenon of Burger Boogaloo — and the Oakland Couple Who Makes It Happen

There's obviously an opening available for a reasonably priced (but professionally run) alternate music festival, especially given the half-death of the Austin Psych Fest and the totally terrible dust conditions at Desert Daze. Please let Burger be that place. Get the line shit figured out WELL BEFORE THE CONCERT since Desert Daze didn't. Have enough actual food vendors (not just frilly vegan-friendly junk, real food) available. And have fun. All of these things CAN be done in the same place. Let's have this be that place.

Recommendations appreciated -- Ragana I name-checked there in the intro and I agree that Russell Butler's "I'm Dropping Out of Life" is solid and noteworthy. Will look into Kevin Allen Project!

Re: “Why Aren't There More Latinx Nights in Oakland?

Yeah. I put this all on the venues.
No matter the genre, all parties can fail. The venues should take 2-3 chances on every party. New parties should start monthly on a weeknight, and if they are successful, either be offered a weekend monthly or take their party elsewhere.

Some parties may need more than 2-3 tries to get off the ground. Word of mouth still works. And venues should know which parties will need more than 2-3 tries to marinate into something that will last.

If you're a Latinx DJ or promoter, please, please keep trying. Last year, last month, last week might not have been the time for your party to jump off. But this month, or next, it could be CRACKIN'.

Re: “Why Aren't There More Latinx Nights in Oakland?

To me, Oakland has always been about Safety. Especially with the Ladies!

If you notice, the only Latino parties that get packed are the venues [shows and concerts]. It's crowded, well lit, parking available and plenty of security. I believe Ladies feel safe there!

The last time I went to Oakland's bars, the ratio of guys to ladies was about 3 to 1. And ... the front doors of a bar I was at .... had to be closed temporarily, due to a shooting across the street.

Oakland still has that reputation!

Re: “Why Aren't There More Latinx Nights in Oakland?

Surprised there was no mention of Club 21 in Uptown Oakland. It's only one of the Largest Latinx Nightclubs in northern California with some of the biggest Latinx parties on Fridays and Saturday nights in the Bay Area usually over 400 people easy on a Friday or Saturday night. This Friday alone Amanda Miguel is performing live there. Club 21 and Club BNB have nights available for Latinx promoters looking to put on events as well.

Re: “Why Aren't There More Latinx Nights in Oakland?

Yo - respect to all the people who commented above, whether or not you got mentioned in the article the community sees you and recognizes your contribution. It's probably important to remember that in a brief article like this it's not going to be possible to explore everything on the subject. Not to take away from your comments at all, just an observation.

Maybe that is an illustration that the Latinx scene isn't as unified as it could be, and this could be a starting point to communicate and collaborate more. I've been to a number of the nights mentioned above, but not all of them, and if we're really trying to all promote Latinx music and culture it's important to connect and build a community around it. When the actors in any given "scene" are supportive of each other's efforts it only works to strenthen that community.Nightlife and the Music world can be territorial and cutthroat, but if we can all recognize each other and help inform our respective networks of the vibrant events that each touch on different styles, cultures, and focuses I think there could be a huge change.

Re: “Why Aren't There More Latinx Nights in Oakland?

I agree with some of the challenges this article mentions that exist for DJs and promoters but I wonder how much research was done sine the writer failed to mention several Latinx events that have been going strong for years in Oakland. Here is a list:
Fresquecito at Bissap Baobab with DJ WaltDigz
La Rumba Que Tumba with DJ Leydis at Brix
Sunday Funday at Caa with DJ Mayky
Salsa by the Lake - free event by Issac Koss
TUMBAO - Msica Cubana at Lukas Taproom & Lounge with DJ JuanLove every Thursday night. Ive been doin this event for 5 years now, 3 of which have been at Lukas.

Re: “Why Aren't There More Latinx Nights in Oakland?

Here in Concord, Vinnie's has designated Thursdays Salsa Night for l don't know how many years. We decided to drop in for a bit, and the dance floor was so crowded we could barely get in the door!

Re: “Why Aren't There More Latinx Nights in Oakland?

I put on Sudada annually and other smaller BrujaLyfe events...but as a womyn Latinx curator I can say venues charge a ridiculous amount of money making it very difficult to throw monthly events.... wish you all also considered the work we are doing.

Re: “Why Aren't There More Latinx Nights in Oakland?

There's also the Global Barrio party which has been going on almost every month at ERA for almost 2 years now, playing a lot of Latinx influenced sounds. But we at Global Barrio have faced the same challenges you have listed.

Re: “Experimental Rock Group Wolf Eyes Throws "Psycho Jazz Weekend"

Nice mention around the 15min mark of this podcast where these efforts are cited as a more ambitious alternative to what major galleries and museums attempt in the world of fine arts. It's welcome to see some reverberation between underground and ivory tower.…
