Re: “Updated: Oakland Spent $72K Closing 162 Homeless Camps in 2015

First of all, the city doesn't OWN the properties you propose they sped tax payer dollars rehabilitating. Oh that's right... It doesn't matter who owns it. Just take it.

Lets see how you like having your property taken. We know the homeless don't like it. Hence the completely valid complaints of their losses when city workers destroy their property.

As to the city and county helping... They need to money to provide that help. If they had it, the city might possibly have it. But the fallout from prop 13 and the machinations commercial property owners use within it are strangling all of them... While iPhone/Macintosh toting kewl art kids benefit from Apple et al stashing over a trillion dollars overseas so as to NOT pay their fair share. The kewl kids "vote their conscience" or don't vote at all so we get the corporate toady (the orange man), instead of the lesser of the two evils.

Bah! You may as well demand Unicorns and a money tree in the back yard.

Re: “Gentrification Station: Why Oakland Still Says NO to Uber

"Uber can start by making sure Uptown Station does not become Gentrification Station. " It has already happened. I live 3 blocks from the Sears Bldg and already the neighborhood has shifted to enticing tech (etc) workers. There are already several massive condo bldgs going up in the surrounding areas (i.e. UNaffordable housing). These are basically for Uber employees and all the other tech companies that will be moving in. As a non-profit worker I couldn't afford to move into my own apartment bldg now (which is mostly run-down). Thank goodness for that evil rent control. How dare I keep $$ out of my long-suffering millionaire landlord's pocket! I know, I know I'm supposed to be a programmer, or in finance, real estate, banking, law, etc etc making $100 K or more a year instead of trying to do good for the community. It's all my fault for not jumping on the start-up bro bandwagon. Please Ayn Rand, save me!

Re: “Berkeley Looks to Tackle Gender Wage Gap, End Pay Discrimination Against Women

Please be very careful with these statistics. The article says "African-American women are paid 63 cents..." Did you make sure to compare African-American women in the same jobs with the same training and experience as white or asian woman, or versus black men and white men? The devil is in the details for these comparisons.

I believe much of the pay difference between men and women comes from occupation choices, experience, and training. It was good to see the article point out the minimal pay gap for nurses, professors, and teachers. If occupation and education are the dominant factors, regulations to limit salary visibility will do little to reduce the aggregate (all men vs. all women) pay gap.

The correct spelling is "its", without an apostrophe.

Re: “Hazy IPAs: The Good, The Bad, And The Juicy

Kralj is a nostalgic dude who has obviously chosen to keep his bread buttered by an RRBC account. The Bistro Fest has become the antithesis to this new aromatic, juicy IPA world (that many top local brewers show no real interest in) and for that, a high door charge? More people have commented on that in 2017 than previous years. I don't think so.

Re: “DA Files Charges In Ghost Ship Fire, Master Tenant Derick Almena And His No. 2 Max Harris Each Face 39 Years

Actually, mayor Schaaf, slumlords get away with murder in Oakland. Your remark attempts to wave away the fact that the City refused to act on clear information presented to its officials again and again.

Re: “Town Business: Oakland Isn't Meeting Its Affordable Housing Goals; Is the City Discriminating in Contracting?

"You can have less affordable housing units permits issued and yet MORE affordable units built."

With a ten to one market rate unit to affordable housing unit in the pipeline I kinda doubt whether there will be more affordable housing units actually built than affordable units.

"The author has no ideas, of course, but just wants to cherry pick data."

The commenter should add that he picks cherries too.

Re: “Alameda Sheriff Deputy's Arrest of Street Fruit Vendor Goes Viral and Draws Criticism

No truck, so he was dropped off. He is blocking the sidewalk at the wheelchair curb cutout. No virgin plastic bags or paper shown. Perfect, uniform fruit. Twelve perfect mangoes; dozens of bananas. No way he grew this.

On a public walkway the question always comes up; "What is a lot of people did this? It is a public WALKWAY. It is not a sitting area.

Re: “City of Oakland ‘Bulldozer’ Hit A Homeless Man While He Was Sleeping In A Tent

hi my name is Sarah Menefee and i'm the homeless pages editor for the national independent monthly newspaper The People's Tribine [peoplestribune.org]. I would like to seek permission to use the photograph by Nick Miller showing the bulldozer crushing the encampment. I'm not sure how else to contact the photographer besides this. If somebody could send me better contact information that would be wonderful, to talk about permission and terms.

Re: “Town Business: Oakland Isn't Meeting Its Affordable Housing Goals; Is the City Discriminating in Contracting?

Nice trickery with the numbers. A couple of points:

1. You cant assume 100% of market rate housing will be built, when you know this is nowhere near the case based on historical data. The author knows this and leaves it out.

2. In 2014, 78% of housing built in Oakland was affordable
(https://oakland.legistar.com/View.ashx?M=F…) . The Author leaves out what was actually built in 2015 in 2016.

3. This is permits issued. NOT actual units built. You can have less affordable housing units permits issued and yet MORE affordable units built. See above point.

4. The average cost to build an affordable housing in Alameda county, according to the State Housing Department, is $345k. The 59 units being built at Acts Full Gospel Church is closer to $500k/unit. $100million allocated from the city would build at most 300 homes, which would still be less than what the report says we need of 840 affordable units. Yet the author says we need more? Say its 1000 units to make the author happy - that's $300 million, and ~25% of Oaklands budget - how do we raise revenue, or make room in the budget for that? The author has no ideas, of course, but just wants to cherry pick data to make it look like we only have an affordable housing issue, and its the result of the "rich" not caring, rather than we have a housing crisis that's impacting everyone at all income levels, and that everyone is to blame.

Re: “Categories We Didn't Think Of: Restaurants and Bars

Where is the best place to score some old school horse biscuits e-tabs and perhaps hang out and swill several pre-peak cocktails, listening to some 80's Smith's, Elvis, or early Beastie Boys? Once the peak hits, who knows what happens but I really need a place like this. Had a perfect little place out in Daily City, just a dudes basement I think, but he had X, tons of music, stocked bar and it could be 330pm on Tuesday and there would be like 8 people in there, reading books, rolling out of their minds, couple girls dancing on the table. Nobody seemed to live there or be I charge but it was always clean and everyone paid for everything. The honor system actually worked, but the tabs came from 2 different blokes, very charming men, very pleasant. Seem they have shuttered their cozy space. Looking for something similar where I can tab peacefully or perhaps meet an interesting stranger to engage in polite conversation. I can be reached by email mict2000@yahoo.com or whatsapp 8054073215
Been a pleasure

Re: “Amid Calls to 'Defund' Oakland Police, City Settles $989,000 Claim of Sexually Exploited Teen 'Celeste Guap'

Let's see... Ms Brooks has been sitting on the council for how many years while this travesty in the OPD has been going on, but it's the mayor at fault?

Allow me to refresh you on some history;

Ms Brooks was first seated to the council in 2002, and vice mayor in 2011.

Ms Schaaf; first seated to the council in 2010 and elected mayor in 2015... Well after the start of this cesspool... Which Ms Brooks was in office for the entirety of.

And SOMEHOW it's all the mayors fault?!

Gimme a break!

I'll refrain from saying what I think exactly as she sues people who buy ink by the barrel. I, as a simple citizen of Oakland can not stand up to that.

Re: “Oakland Expends Considerable Money and Person-Power Displacing Homeless Residents, According to City Records

As I said before, HARM reduction is simply a variant on the mantra from the loan officers of the financial crash, IBG-UBG (I be gone, you be gone), AKA kick it down the road for someone else to deal with.

Real adult.

Re: “Oakland Expends Considerable Money and Person-Power Displacing Homeless Residents, According to City Records

"Grownups have to make life happen even when wishes don't come true."

Precisely! That's what makes harm reduction the adult approach!

Re: “Oakland Expends Considerable Money and Person-Power Displacing Homeless Residents, According to City Records

Mr Halberstadt, we then share similar backgrounds.

As a born and bred East Bay native, I've seen what NIMBY brings, "get it out of my face" does and HARM reduction's only result is all too often to stop short of real solutions, leaving the wound to continue to fester.

I prefer real solutions. References to fantasy accounts are at best "feel good" substitutes. Why not say instead to pray the problems away? Bah!

Those band-aids all can make breathing room possible, but that room HAS to be used, not become "out of sight, out of mind, it's not a problem". This last has been the history and there is no reason not to believe, the fact going forward.

And this is where you and I fundamentally differ... What is vs what I think it should be.

As I said before Unicorns, Elves, Fairies and money trees are wonderful... For children.

Grownups have to make life happen even when wishes don't come true.
