Re: “Letters of the week: The Homeless Issue in Oakland was a Hot Topic Among our Readers

What can legally be done to limit where one sets up a tent? Why do they allow tents to be set up in city parks? We keep talking about the rights of the homeless what about the rights of all people that live here in Oakland. I'm all for helping the homeless I just believe there should be limits They seem to have free rein to litter and place large furniture pieces in the street. Just because the Mayor has no idea what to do we must place pressure on her to do something. Our police pass right by and do nothing. This city deserves better it's a beautiful place to live and taking care of it should be all of our priorities.

Following up on my previous Swanson Report comment
"In November 2015, the City Attorney herself raised concerns with Chief Whent that the alleged officer sexual misconduct regarding Ms. Abuslin

Quoting, Practicing Ethics: CA Handbook for Municipal Lawyers

F. CITY ATTORNEYS RIGHT TO REPORT MATTERS
UP THE HIERARCHY
When a city attorney learns that the conduct of a city official
or employee is or may be a violation of law that may be
reasonably imputed to the organization or is likely to
result in substantial injury to the organization, State Bar
rules expressly authorize the city attorney to take the matter
to the highest internal authority within the organization.

your report clearly states that OCA Parker either, kept this secret between herself and Chief Whent, thus ethically failing to notify anyone else [ie Schaaf or Landreth], or was never questions by investigators, on who she actually told before March 2016, when Libby, Landreth and Monitor "claim" to have found out. These claims are in contradiction to the email chains EBX reported going to OCA and Landreth's office by civilian police representatives, prior to March 2016. Reasonable community people are finding it harder and harder to believe the Administration's March reveal date...may be letting Whent retire instead of being fired, was the administration's inside hush deal

Re: “New Oakland Police Sexual Misconduct Case Leads to Discovery of Drugs Stashed in Locker

"The administration buildings basement includes a shooting practice range, which is used as a virtual gun-and-weapons simulator, and also features several other rooms." You know what else is in the basement? The Evidence room. This is shoddy reporting with a click-bait headline, and no real details. Find a real story to report instead of looking for anything malicious to say about OPD. Not everything is a scandal, people. Go read some actual, verifiably factual news.

Re: “Naming Names: These Officers Are Responsible for the Failed Oakland Police Sex Scandal Investigation

Some of these lawyers representing the Criminal Element and Those Who Feel They Have Been Treated Unethically By The Police might as well be getting bi-weekly checks from the City of Oakland. Shouldn't the City Attorney fight a few,of these cases out in court? Shouldn't roll over with public money at stake.

Re: “Troubled by Police Mishandling of Sex Crime Investigation, Federal Judge Orders City of Oakland Back to Court

Has it been 17 years since the Riders were hounded from the force for being too harsh with the criminal element? Hounded and charged but never convicted...driven into poverty, probably. And the result has seen Oakland in a steady declining trajectory. Maybe if the city could shake off that lefty federal supervision things would get better. Let the cops get back to crushing criminals.

Re: “Gentrification Station: Why Oakland Still Says NO to Uber

Regardless of whether it's Uber occupying the Sears building or not, Oakland needs a steady influx of revenue. Those millions of dollars Oakland NEEDS to fight homelessness and improve it's infrastructure (just two things the City needs to work on), won't come if they keep buckling to the demands to STOP GENTRIFICATION. I'm tired of hearing, "I was born and raised in Oakland, and I rent here, and they owe me an opportunity to afford to live here..." Well guess what, I was born and raised here, own a home here, and Oakland owes me the opportunity to actually benefit from things my PROPERTY TAXES say I'm entitled to. Well maintained streets, decent schools, low crime, businesses to spend my money, etc. I haven't gotten jack from this Oakland EXCEPT a higher tax bill EVERY YEAR. So until I start getting something in return, I don't care about what the anti-gentrification community has to say.

Re: “Oakland Has a New Two-Year Budget, but Only After a Night of Divisive Infighting

These politicians continue pandering to a discriminatory liberal agenda that promotes bigger Bureaucracy promoting dependence among the poor, very high taxes on the middle class, BACK-ROOM DEALS, a hamstrung police force, and super high crime rates.

Re: “Naming Names: These Officers Are Responsible for the Failed Oakland Police Sex Scandal Investigation

The OPD is a gang of useless criminal thugs leeching off the taxpayers, refusing to show up for anything short of murder, worst solve rate in the country. Nobody even bothers to call the cops anymore.

Fire and prosecute bad cops, lower their bloated pay (inexplicably these yahoos make more than most cops in the Bay Area), get rid of the overtime they use to play six-figure meter maid, demand 50% or more of their resources go to investigating crimes instead of writing traffic tickets, and bring them to heel. We're sick of this legally-sanctioned street gang run amok.

Re: “California to Require All Marijuana to be Lab Tested. What Will Happen to Weed That Fails the Lab?

A basic tenant of good manufacturing practices (GMP) is that quality cannot be tested into a product, it must be built in to every step of the process. Testing is an important part of quality control - and should be part of any good regulatory structure. However, it is a reactive process. Cannabis regulations would be much more effective at protecting health and safety if they made operators meet GMP standards- not to mention the cost savings.

Re: “Oakland Has a New Two-Year Budget, but Only After a Night of Divisive Infighting

Gee, I guess we can't complain any more when the police and fire don't show up quickly. Well, who needs them. We're a peaceful, safe city with few serious crimes ...

I suppose defunding improvements to police and fire is really about anger over the departments' arrogance and failures. And taking advantage of the anger to boost other projects. Looks like Trumpification to me--cutting off our nose to spite our face.

Re: “Oakland City Council Passes Divisive Proposal to Establish Violence Prevention Department

The comments here explain why such a common-sense move would seem "divisive." Shame, judgement and fear of minorities "taking" from middle-class whites drives the cycle of hatred. An ounce of prevention is worth a (at least) pound of cure, and not enough has been done to build the safety net of girls who are being sucked into sexual slavery or boys who are vulnerable to the peer pressures of violence. Coordinated and sustained efforts are needed to create safety for all. I have high hopes for this project and applaud the city council and the people. We can change the dynamics of bullying.

Re: “On the Phenomenon of Burger Boogaloo — and the Oakland Couple Who Makes It Happen

Great, great music--but two major complaints.

1. Only two alcoholic beverages sold: A craft beer...and Pabst Blue Ribbon.

2. It's called Burger Bugaloo...and only one vendor was there selling burgers. A tiny...expensive....grass-fed....yuppie burger.

That makes no sense! Have a dozen burger trucks!! Not one!! Why would you think of rejecting a quality vendor that wants to sell burgers at the Burger Bugaloo?????
