Re: “Kyle "Based Stickman" Chapman Charged with Possession of Leaded Stick by Alameda District Attorney

I see DBG is yet again attempting to incite the populace by raising the focus on these repugnant people and their ideologies.

I can't say ignoring them is a solution either but playing to their desire for publicity and emphasizing "how dangerous" they are gives them exactly what they want.

MOST irresponsible DBG!

Re: “White Nationalists Plan Yet Another Brawl in Berkeley

Let's keep in mind these "peaceful" conservatives arrive armed and armored, ready for battle and looking to provoke one.

I don't think we can call antifa or those in the press who support them much better.

While repugnant and evil, the Klan and American Nazi party have marched and been largely ignored for decades. I'm not sure if that allowed them to grow or if ignoring them caused withering. I do understand the concern about the recent ascendance of their ideology under all of it's names; It frightening and all too reminiscent of 1939.

I think the ONLY reply to them is the video, found in numerous places, called "Don't Be A Sucker". I'd post a link to in on the internet archive, but I'm not sure it's allowed.

Re: “White Nationalists Plan Yet Another Brawl in Berkeley

This is such spin, people who support free speech & are conservative are not all so called white, racist or there for a "BRAWL"! Remember if the police are not protecting conservatives from marching in support or against something & constantly allow the alt left to harassed or even attack, thats the real problem! I feel all sides are being infiltrated by radicals who want each side to look bad at the expense of good people! I grew up when people agreed to disagree no matter what you heard or felt you do NOT attack or harass people! I was at the inauguration, it was not fair the way we were treated & some are using all the violence from the last admin to now to push there own agendas and its making life unbearable for conservatives which Has terrible consequences for all!

Re: “Paradise Park Cafe Brings All-Day Dining to Oakland

My boyfriend and I were invited to the grand opening. We ordered the Paradise Salad which I found to be delicious . Ingredients were a wonderful curry tumeric lightly fried chick pea squares, sliced whole pea shoots, grilled asparagus, carrots, radish, and lettuce with a lemon vinagarette. Simply amazing and incredibly fresh. We also had the burger which came with long thin onion rings, tomato and lettuce with a spicy aoili which was requested I strongly disagree with the article that this place has unremarkable food although the editor of this article historically seems to shy away from California contemporary

Re: “After 28 Years, Colonial Donuts Faces Closure as Uptown Oakland Rents Continue to Rise

I hope Lakeshore Colonial won't be next. Shops which have been here many years are ousted and it takes forever for new ownership to get various permits and permissions out of the city to open up something new. Wasn't stream-lining permitting for renovation and new construction on the Mayor's short list when she was elected?

Why only comments from union types and supporters? Why no comments from Robert Fellner himself? He is easily found and user friendly. What happened to objective journalism? Annika, you should do a follow up?

Re: “Oakland Police Assist Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agents in Early Morning Arrest

In addition to the Nixle statement that David Howard posted here, more relevant details are in the East Bay Times. 1) A federal spokesperson said, "It's not an immigration enforcement action. This is a criminal investigation." 2) A woman at the house owns two janitorial businesses, and agents investigated whether she exploits people. 3) This woman's 21-year-old daughter who also lives at the house said that after initially being aggressive, the federal agents were "really nice and we were treated respectfully." -- All relevant details that writer Darwin "Disregard the Facts" omits.

Re: “Group Calls for Oakland Animal Services to Lower Euthanasia Rate, But Administrators and Allies Say Shelter is Best it’s Been in Years

Ive been volunteering at Oakland Animal Services for the past five months and have experienced such a different portrayal of the shelter than what's depicted in your article. Dogs are cared for with compassion, by not only the staff, but by the many volunteers. In fact, I believe in this organization so much that I drive across the bridge from Marin just to help out. I am surprised by the comment that stated OAS doesn't give pit bulls a fair chance. If you look on the OAS Facebook page or Instagram, you'll see many pit bulls being promoted, and if you come to the shelter in person, you'll see quite a few up for adoption. Their lower adoption rate isn't due to the shelter, but the stigma attached to the breed. Our new foster coordinator has been very responsive to the needs of the dogs, especially those who take longer to find their forever homes. Additionally, OAS is an open admissions shelter which means that they take in all animals, unlike other organizations that can be selective. I would encourage people to come to the shelter, or to one of OAS's off-site adoption events to see for themselves. Maybe they'll be compelled to volunteer, or perhaps even fall in love with a pit bull!

Re: “Oakland Police Assist Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agents in Early Morning Arrest

Folks on Nixle got this alert:

Today, August 16, 2017, at approximately 6:30 a.m., Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) served a federal criminal search warrant in connection with human sex trafficking of juveniles in our city ( 700 block of 27th Street).
HSI is conducting a criminal investigation, not a civil immigration or deportation action. This branch focuses on Transnational Gangs, Human Trafficking, Human Smuggling, Child Exploitation and Narcotic Enforcement.

Yesterday, HSI headquarters in San Francisco contacted Oakland Police Chief Anne E. Kirkpatrick and requested two police officers to assist with traffic control. Chief Kirkpatrick gave strict instructions to the commander and officers that they may not assist HSI with any enforcement efforts. The officers only role was that of traffic control and neighborhood safety.

Although the Oakland Police Department no longer has a contract (MOU) to actively participate in investigations with HSI, the Department may assist our local, state, and federal agencies when requested as it pertains to traffic control, community safety and officer safety.

Re: “White Nationalists Plan Yet Another Brawl in Berkeley

Lincoln, himself, said he would free
no slaves, if he could conquer the
South without them. There were race
riots and blacks were lynched on
Broadway, in the middle of the Civil
War. Clearly, Lincoln only freed the
slaves as a means to end the war. Such
are the words and actions, of a
conqueror. The First thing the Egyptians,
Romans, Ottomans, English, Communists,
Nazis and Yankees did when conquering
new territory was tear down the native
idols, destroy the native culture and
supplant it with their own.

Yankee kids see their parents' rent to
own homes siphoned off by the fraud of
Wall Street. They see their parents
financially enslaved only to have their
life's earnings drained by Wall Street
games. They look around their tenements
and know the prosperity they're sold
is the mirage of a Ponzi scheme.

Would you expect Wall Street to accept
the blame for the constant failure of
their culture and routine collapse
of their economy? When Yankees brainwash
children in those indoctrination centers
they laughingly call schools, and the
rote singsong of liberty, freedom,
justice and prosperity fail against
the back drop of segregated slum
reality, what else can they fill their
kids' heads with, but hatred of the
South and all things Southern? Already
brow beaten and frustrated Long before
they drop out, where do Yankees send
their young Taliban in training to
vent their anger? South, to purge their
disillusionment on tarnished chunks of
bronze and tattered bits of colored
cloth.

No more than the Civil War, these
statues have little to do with
slavery. They represent nothing
more than the continued defiance
of a conquered people and zone of
occupation. Just like their Commie
and Nazi brethren, the Yankee Empire
cannot abide defiance. Every time
the South shows any signs of economic
or political independence; when
cotton was king, when oil rained in
Texas, today, the young Taliban march
South, to exert Yankee dominance,
and impose Yankee rule. After
Reconstruction and the fifties invasion,
ever so, the South did and will rise,
again, and, some day, live free of
the YSA.

Re: “How a Billionaire-Funded, Anti-Union Think Tank in Nevada Shapes Bay Area News Media Coverage of Public Employee Pay

The writer is upset that the taxpayers have found out that they are being blatantly ripped off by their hired help, so she's demanding that the facts be hidden? Oh really!

It is an undeniable fact that most of our public servants would earn significantly less in the private sector than they're taking from the taxpayers and it is also an undeniable fact that we could get exponentially more and better service for a fraction of the cost by privatizing most of our public services. Those are facts. Our public servants are quite blatantly stealing from us.

We've got freaking meter maids in Berkeley earning a total of $125k+ in compensation (look it up). We've got a former police officer (Cary Kent) - collecting $70k/year in pension benefits from the taxpayers after being CONVICTED of a FELONY for stealing drugs from the evidence locker. The list of fraud and abuse of the taxpayer by the public service unions is a long one and it goes on and on.

So yes, obviously the proper response is to blame the folks who are bringing transparency and shining the light onto these cockroaches! No. The answer is more light, more transparency, and yes - complete privatization of our public services because we can absolutely get a LOT more for a lot LESS money.

The numbers are undeniably clear that we can both significantly cut taxes in the Bay Area while getting a LOT more public service and actually taking care of our people.

As for the claim above - regarding the former officer Cary Kent, here are the details: http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/BERK…

Re: “Group Calls for Oakland Animal Services to Lower Euthanasia Rate, But Administrators and Allies Say Shelter is Best it’s Been in Years

Im concerned that this article leaves the reader with a false impression about the increase in euthanasia of dogs at OAS. By comparing the overall euthanasia rate of 15% from your Oct 2015 reporting to the 23.8% rate for only dogs in the first half 2017, the reader is left with the impression that euthanasia of dogs has increased dramatically, but this is not completely accurate. It should be clear that it is not proper to compare the overall rate from one period, which includes cats and all other animals, to the dog-only rate for another period.

I also looked at the data, and found that the transfer and adoption rates (43% and 15%) for dogs were essentially unchanged between the first half of 2017 and the same period in 2016. The euthanasia rate for dogs increased less than 2%, from 22.4% to 23.8% between the two periods. Like anyone, I too would prefer to see more animals being saved, but the facts do not support the narrative that there was some dramatic shift to killing more dogs at OAS. Those who wish to see positive changes at the shelter - and this includes myself - must start from an honest understanding of the data.

With transfer, adoption, and euthanasia rates nearly unchanged, the noticeable increase in empty dog kennels at the shelter turns out be due to reduced length of stay and reduced intake, just like director Katz stated. Intake of dogs is down slightly, and as the article reported length of stay has been dramatically reduced due to operational improvements at the shelter. If fewer dogs are coming in, and they are staying for a shorter period of time, it follows that there will be fewer dogs in the shelter population.
