Re: “El Jarro Mexican Cafe

I judge Mexican restaurants by their Chili Rellenos, and they are simply the BEST at El Jarro!! Get ready with a serving of soup, hearty and flavorful, while soaking in the atmosphere and decor. Feels like home, even to this Anglo, longing for past memories in the Gulf.

Re: “Tasty Vapor

I love this place. Customer service is the best, the store is clean and a great place to chill. They have the best flavors and awesome prices with customizing options. This is the only place I shop for my vape supplies.

Re: “Inception

I agree with the reviewer. There are plenty of flaws in the believability of some of the ideas and the foundation of knowledge that Nolan draws his movie about dreams from that seem to just be arbitrarily placed for plot points but, the largest flaw is in his understanding of visuals being used to communicate the sensational aspect of dreams. Unlike Satoshi Kon's Paprika which inception greatly steals from, inception does not utilize visual communication to portray the difference between a dream or even the similarities of life and dreaming and how dreams and reality are blurred. Everything is portrayed in a non-visual way. He just tells us these ideas about dreams and shows dreams the same as life, and if the concept is that it is impossible to decipher the difference between dreams and waking life he does not use visuals to show that as well. Christopher Nolan just steals ideas that he finds interesting from great art to make them into his tone deaf and action-filled blockbuster. The problem is not that his movies are boring the problem is that his movies seem to be intellectual and different from what we usually see when they are just like any other action packed blockbuster.

Goodbye Raiders, don't let the door hit in you in the butt on the way out. You've sucked Oakland dry for far too long.

Re: “East Bay Paratransit Bus System Leaves Drivers Broke and Riders Often Stranded

I worked in the Radiology dept some years ago. I observed, in horror, as the elderly and disabled waited, sometimes hours, after their CT and/or Ultrasounds scans. In many cases they hadn't had anything to eat or drink, because of the prep for the test. I would call paratransit on a regular basis to confirm patient pick up. It was a nightmare for me to get someone from paratransit on the phione.. A much bigger nightmare for those just trying to get home.

Re: “Young Professionals Only? Housemates Accuse Landlord of Rejecting Subtenant Applications in Hopes of Vacating Rent-Controlled Unit.

I think you all are missing the elephant in the room- the landlord days she wants YOUNG professionals. Age discrimination is illegal.

Re: “Young Professionals Only? Housemates Accuse Landlord of Rejecting Subtenant Applications in Hopes of Vacating Rent-Controlled Unit.

Mike Mitchell, your comments are abhorrent. The landlord is basing her decisions on what jobs people have, rather than the fact that they already have a job that covers the rent as it stands. This is illegal, but not to you apparently. Every comment you bleat on EBX reeks of right-wing, Ayn Randian buffoonery to the highest degree. You should consider yourself part of the problem, not the solution. Meritocracy, my ass. You must also believe in the American Dream and the just and fair Invisible Hand! All outdated and disproven concepts.

Mr. Blafard, so ignorant in your assumptions. What is written about property control coming from the activists is true and that's that!.

Re: “Best of the East Bay 2017: Readers' Poll Winners!

Disappointing, don't feel the need to call out some of these smaller spots, but Fenton's for best ice cream? Seriously? (i'm from oakland, yes it's a landmark that's perfect to bring your 12 aunts-nieces-nephews-from-out-of-town.. No it's not the best ice cream).

Maybe people should be encouraged to only vote on categories where they have very strong opinions???? Cause this list looks mostly like "most popular" or "names that comes to mind quickest"... as opposed to best.

Re: “Ethics Commission: Oakland Councilmember McElhaney Violated Conflict-of-Interest Rules, Accepted Illegal Gifts

It doesn't sound like oany of this was done secretly. Don't you love how the ethics commission did not investigate until EBX reported on this corruption? Kinda like how most of Oakland's corruption goes uninvestigated?

Re: “Court-Appointed Monitor Who Oversees Oakland Police Department Could Have Blocked Controversial Promotions — but He Didn’t.

A couple things occur to me;

1.) The young lady we refer to as Celeste Guape has been consistently referred to as a teen... Does this simply that she was 18 or 19? Or was she younger?

If the former, it seems that an attempt at emotional button pressing is being employed to make her seem both younger and to absolve her of any responsibility in the situation while inflaming an already intolerable situation within the OPD. If the later, then the situation is far worse. It then becomes, at a minimum, statutory rape.

EBX, the young ladies lawyer(s) and the system in general seem to be avoiding that designation.

Given the general tendency the reporter has demonstrated to inflammatory language in regards to this issue, I can only conclude the reason for anyone NOT calling this statutory rape or child sexual abuse is that she WAS in fact a young adult (over the age of consent) making disciplinary action FAR more difficult within a legal framework (always keeping in mind the core of the complaint against OPD is UNLAWFUL activity) than had she in fact been a minor (As has been consistently implied).

2.) Returning to the idea of UNLAWFUL activity as core to the complaint (or denial of contractual or legal rights) by part of ANY government agency (OPD, city council or those otherwise functionally a part of city, county, state or federal governance at ANY level); Surely this is NOT being advocated by the author... Nor inciting mob mentality... Is it?

There MAY well be legal issues (read as UNLAWFUL issues) with the "suggestions" presented... And I suspect that EBX is well aware of them and has chosen not to mention them in favor of incitement, especially given the possibilities of point one.
