Re: “Nyum Bai Looks to Open Brick-and-Mortar in Oakland's Fruitvale Village

There is a wonderful documentary called DON'T THINK I'VE FORGOTTEN about this golden era of Cambodian rock n roll. Its an excellent film that will let you know what was going on in the music scene before it was brutally suppressed by Pol Pot, et al.

"Every such case locally which I am aware of in which the culprit responsible for "far right" vandalism has been identified, that person turned out to be either a person of color or a mentally disturbed homeless person"

You must be reading fake news, lady. Let's see some proof.

Re: “What’s Up With Retail?

How can people who work in retail afford to live in the Bay Area? I don't know how people do it. Probably $1000 at minimum for rent, plus expenses. All on $13/hr and having to hear your employer complain that even minimum wage is too much to pay.
Here's a solution: build dormitory housing for laborers, food service, and retail workers like they do in Third World countries because, yep, that's where we are at this point.

Excellent news! I hope the Elbo Room keeps going with their wide-ranging booking policy (dub/experimental/rock/Afrofunk etc). As for The Night Light--I saw some great shows at that place...then it just suddenly fell off the map. Played one of my worst shows there--no promotion, no support, no replies to emails. Now I know why.

Re: “Wholesale Pot Prices Plummet

What a travesty this all is. People who voted "yes" on this will soon be resorting to black market weed because of the insane amount of tax that will be attached to purchases. The black market will thrive, at least until the inevitable corporate pot monopoly leans on Emerald Triangle law enforcement to go after small growers, which they'll do without haste.
We just can't seem to do anything right in California and those that voted "yes" for this couldn't see the writing on the wall under all that pot smoke haze.

Re: “The Deserving Dozen

Wow! I'm a Kurt Suzuki fan but Mike Heath EASILY. How is King Kong NOT on this list? The BIGGEST snub by FAR is Tony Armas. The A's had the coolest and one of the best outfield trios in Rickey, Dwayne (with his hat falling off on every ball hit to him) and Tony Armas. I see a young fan bias in this.

Raha Jorjani is definitely a guardian angel. She is caring, compassionate, an amazing human being who is righting the wrongs for so many.

Re: “Survey: 2 Percent of the US Identifies as Lesbian, Gay, or Bisexual

Actually, the LGBT LGTB-etc should be more than 2%, I know some bisexuals around me, there are some online communities for LGBT people, is a resource to help bisexual singles meet other bisexual people.

Re: “On the Phenomenon of Burger Boogaloo — and the Oakland Couple Who Makes It Happen

There's obviously an opening available for a reasonably priced (but professionally run) alternate music festival, especially given the half-death of the Austin Psych Fest and the totally terrible dust conditions at Desert Daze. Please let Burger be that place. Get the line shit figured out WELL BEFORE THE CONCERT since Desert Daze didn't. Have enough actual food vendors (not just frilly vegan-friendly junk, real food) available. And have fun. All of these things CAN be done in the same place. Let's have this be that place.

Every such case locally which I am aware of in which the culprit responsible for "far right" vandalism has been identified, that person turned out to be either a person of color or a mentally disturbed homeless person. I'm curious, has Scott Morris or anyone else been able to identify any individual responsible for the vandalism at Alchemy Collective Cafe, Hercules Records, Ba-Bite, Edison High School, Otis Elementary, Encinal Junior High, Canyon Middle School, Castro Valley High School, Temple Israel of Alameda, Temple Sinai in Oakland, the Oakland International Container Terminal or at Tesla in Freemont?

Re: “The Top 12 Bay Area Music Releases of 2017

Recommendations appreciated -- Ragana I name-checked there in the intro and I agree that Russell Butler's "I'm Dropping Out of Life" is solid and noteworthy. Will look into Kevin Allen Project!

Re: “Far Right's Rise Brings Racist Vandalism to the East Bay

White people in the Bay Area like to think we're in a bubble where things like this don't happen. We've gotta wake up. People of color have known the score the whole time.

Re: “Enviros Battle Developers Over Richmond Hills Open Space

Yes this region overall needs to strictly limit development of open space.

Land with vegetation is our lungs in a region whose air quality is poor.

But pols need to learn that land use and transportation need closely-coordinated planning.

Increasing density near existing public transit (BART, buses) would be a good idea if there were adequate public transit capacity. There is not.

If the region is to continue to grow we will have to invest heavily in additional transportation (NOT car-based).

The social, economic and environmental costs of growth are very high and we have not begun to deal with these costs.

Re: “Someone to Watch Over Me

I knew Exzadrian Van Williams in North County Jail in Oakland California and while I wouldn't be able to recall what he was arrested for then if I were asked, I would say it was something along the lines of forgery or fraud.
I only googled his name to see if he had done something better with his life after prison, and I guess I found the answer.

Re: “Pending Eviction of Former Black Panther Aunti Frances Highlights Just-Cause 'Loophole'

Let's see; In 1978 prop 13 passed rolling taxes back, with a capped rise of 2 percent going forward... Unless the property changes hands (or it belongs to a corporation; In that case, let the games begin).

Once it changes hands, in which case the property get's a complete reassessment to market tax rates. BIG hop in the taxes.

Is any of this racist or classist? I don't think so. Is it right? That goes to the heart of the debate on property tax doesn't it... No answer to that has yet emerged... But it IS a fact, and as a fact, not really debatable.... Unless one is an East Coast developer

The clear implication to this is fairly obvious... The new owner WILL have higher costs associated with owning the property.

So, my question is this: Are the activists proposing that property sales be frozen so that people like Aunti Frances don't experience rises in their rents and/or evictions? What about the experience of the property owner(the one who sold the property)? Are they now, not allowed to sell what they bought and paid for?

As someone else asked, are both the old and new owner somehow required to subsidize Aunti Frances in her choices? Wait! She get's to make choices and have someone subsidize them and they (the property owners) don't?! Why?

Can anyone explain that to me?
