Re: “Town Business: Oakland Discovers Extra $7.13 Million Hidden in Police Department's Proposed Budget

1.4% of that money could fund the feasibility study for the Public Bank of Oakland that the City Council so far has refused to sign off on.

Once the bank was fully operational, based on the performance of the public bank in North Dakota, Oakland's bank should be able to generate $20,000,000 - $60,000,000 A YEAR in additional funds for the City of Oakland and its people.

The $100K is a no-brainer. It's an investment in Oakland's future, and there are none with such a potential ROI for so little up-front.

Re: “Picán Restaurant in Uptown Oakland Closing ... For Now

I took a friend there for a special dinner last year, inspired by a CheckPlease review on KQED... some items were good, but a tough and smallish piece of "signature" fried chicken was a disappointment with overpriced side dishes required to make a meal.
The coup de grace was my friend's request for some sparkling water being met with a fancy, imported bottle of something brought to the table without comment. It later showed up on the bill as a $19 charge. Really?! Never went back. End of story. Have a nice "hiatus" Pican. And au revoir.

Re: “Oakland City Council Fights Over How to Reduce Homicides, Violence

Hmm. if we take the argument for the creation of a DVP at face value, does that mean that OPD are ineffective at violence prevention? If so, why would spending more $$ on police be an effective solution? Consider that Oakland just paid out almost $1m to settle the Celeste Guap case. That's money which could have been spent on things which could have reduced violence.

Re: “Oakland City Council Fights Over How to Reduce Homicides, Violence

Oakland has half the police, in ratio to population, that most major cities have. Oakland residents suffer two and three times more robberies, burglaries, and assaults than people in almost every other city in the U.S. The poverty rate for Oakland is average, and lower than the poverty rate in many safer cities. -- Three facts that all the councilmembers run away from.

Re: “Picán Restaurant in Uptown Oakland Closing ... For Now

Thanks for all the great food. Haters gonna hate, but I had great food, great drinks and great times there for years. Sure there were misses and a couple of bad service moments, but that's the industry. Thanks for making a great place for POC's and soulful White folks to get their grub on and socialize with style. You can always find a soul shack somewhere. Pican brought Black elegance and power to the center. The food wasn't cheap, but the cultural contribution was enoromous.

The food was overpriced and underwhelming.

Re: “Expert: You Don't Have to Be a State Resident to Get Medical Marijuana In California Right Now

So I thought I would share my experience. I am 20 years old, not an American and am not a resident of California, but I still managed to get a recommendation (in around 5 minutes) and was able to get a delivery on the same day. The ONLY THING you need, is a U.S. Government-issued identification with your picture and date of birth (I used my visa and it worked fine). There will be places that do not accept you and I doubt most walk-in dispensaries will let me in but I don't care as I can order from countless places.

Re: “Oakland Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan Sponsoring Legislation to Cut Police Ties with Immigration Enforcement

While I think, as do many others, that there should not be coordination or secret agreements between ICE and OPD, going about establishing police policy in Oakland in a piecemeal way is a very bad idea.

Policing in general in Oakland is a terrible mess. Morale is low among cops, turnover is very high, costs to taxpayers are excessive and crime, especially violent crime is, at an intolerable level. This is not to mention a decade-and-a-half failure to meet Federal-court mandated reforms. A terrible mess.

Working our way out of this mess means developing a vision for what OPD can and must do, given all the existing challenges. A limitied, well-defined, positive vision for policing and public safety in Oakland is an absolute necessity. Specific policy follows but the vision is the critical element.

In terms of vision, Oakland is, essentially, nowhere. We need a holistic, reasonable and practical approach to what OPD must do for public safety.

What we have is a patchwork of many years' reactive efforts to deal with bits and pieces of public safety failure. This is not a useful way to proceed.

Re: “Picán Restaurant in Uptown Oakland Closing ... For Now

Not sure about your analysis of Oakland politics but I CAN tell you the restaurant industry is going through major changes (the outcome of which is up in the air) and full service restaurants are struggling and/or closing throughout the Bay Area.

Re: “Picán Restaurant in Uptown Oakland Closing ... For Now

EBX is where the narrative goes to thrive, such story tellers. Pican was the gentrification they wanted to see. The restaurant cost around $1.8m to build and it's always been expensive, from day one. I ate there in 2009 and thought the cost was too high, similar to a high quality place in SF but in a cheaper desolate part of Oakland. Oakland businesses are dieing because Oakland (the City and its political class) only know how to operate in an idealistic vacuum AND milk a good thing until it's dead. It's been doing the same thing for 40+ years with the exact same results. We're only thriving because regional pressure has become so incredibly enormous.

Re: “Oakland City Council Fights Over How to Reduce Homicides, Violence

The City is broke and borrowing money to fix potholes, and these clowns want to hire more highly paid bureaucrats to tell us how to fix something we know how to fix.

More jobs.
Fewer segregated communities. End housing projects and establish zones where those receiving housing assistance can live. (Meaning that everyone does not end up in close proximity in a large poor community, but are spread throughout the city.)

Re: “Oakland Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan Sponsoring Legislation to Cut Police Ties with Immigration Enforcement

Separating from ICE as much as possible has
brought about powerful improvements in San
Francisco public safety, as well as community
integrity and solidarity.

I would strongly recommend that Oakland follow suit and go even further than San Francisco in separating itself from ICE.

Re: “Amid Calls to 'Defund' Oakland Police, City Settles $989,000 Claim of Sexually Exploited Teen 'Celeste Guap'

Were the FAT police holding US flag at Game 2 doing so on City time or even overtime. OMG--let some HS kids do it for free! Did Larry Reid pay for his ticket? I sense a job at Oak Port Authority coming his way...al those cops musta had desk jobs. Aren't their annual physical tests for these porkers??

Re: “Oakland Mayor Literally Raises A's Flag Over City Hall An Hour After Raiders-To-Vegas Vote

Mayor Libby. question? Were the OPD members looking a bit pregnant holding the US flag at Game 2 on the City Payroll at the time? Or perhaps even Overtime? Why not let some high school kids , even in PAL leaves, do it for free.

Re: “Oakland Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan Sponsoring Legislation to Cut Police Ties with Immigration Enforcement

It's about time these agreements stopped being signed in secret. "The hearing uncovered a previously unknown memorandum of understanding between the Oakland police and ICE that allows OPD officers to work in task forces alongside ICE agents". How is that even possible? It may have been signed in secret, but the decision whether or not to continue it will be in public.
