Re: “Best in the West

YES! Many thanks for your mention. My family and I are long-time season ticket holders, and in less than five years, we've watched Cal WBB climb from mediocre to promising to damn good. At $10 a ticket, with discounts for seniors and kids, the team is also an excellent entertainment value. (Note to women's basketball fans: You can see Lexi Gray-Lawson and her stellar fellow guards Lauren Greif and Natasha Vital, plus most of Cal's highly rated incoming rookies, for free at the summer pro-am games at Kezar Pavilion: www.sanfranciscoproam.com.

(By the way, it's Joanne Boyle.)

Re: “Best Community Garden

Wonderful article and Ms. Casale is out there making a difference in young people's lives. Wish I lived closer. Would be volunteering if they'd have me.

Re: “Best Place to Shunt the Boys Out of the House To, Whatever Their Age

This year will mark the 140th anniversary of the completion of this line as part of the original Transcontinental Railroad in 1869. The bridges were originally built before 1869, but the more "modern" steel spans that currently exist replaced the original wood trusses between 1896 and 1906. These still use the stone abutments that were built between 1866 and 1869.

Re: “Best Dive Bar Renovation

So exciting to see this article! The HTC has such a diverse selection of alcohol for unbeatable prices, shuffleboard table, and taco truck (now Thurs - Sun). Not to mention the owners and staff are just down-to-earth great people : )

Re: “Best New Gourmet Ghetto

Slow down a bit with the enthusiasm for Glenview. Bellanico and Marzano are both good, and nicely priced, but the menus are too similar and the dishes have a certain uniformity. We need a broader, more original California cuisine in Glenview. Where are the mussels, crab, eel or smoked fish? Quail, snails, boar or rabbit? Avocados, turnips, walnuts, pears, ginger, coriander, lavender, citrus? Glenview is still too safe for really adventurous foodies, and I speak as someone who lives, and eats, there.

Re: “Best Church Name ... In the Twilight Zone

Good, but I also like The Church of Perfect Liberty on Park Blvd above 580. I don't think it has such a history, but it is painted a stunning green and just invites speculation about what goes on inside.

Re: “Best Showman Chef

I have been to Chef Devon's dinners and he is amazing. Most chefs are shy or arrogant. Devon is the perfect blend of confidence and talent.

Re: “The New Extreme Sports

I think good health care will come until we realize what are those unhealthy foods we intake. Good diet will do.We're paying more these days not only at the gas pump but also at the grocery store. Blame it on rising oil prices, disappointing crop yields, global warming, and/or the weak dollar.Planning ahead is the most important step to getting more bang for your buck at the grocery store,.Eating healthier foods can actually save you money and health against possible diseases. The researchers found that when families went on weight loss diets, they not only lost weight but reduced their food budgets.Learn how to control spending. It helps minimize the possibility og getting personal loans. Read more click http://personalmoneystore.com/Personal-Loans/

Re: “Restaurants & Bars: Dive Bars

hilarious. it may just be the four drinks I just had a Baggy's but you had me laughing out loud over and over. great job!

By the way; the best part about Baggy's is that the picture you mentioned above the bar (of the bar!) is of the bar WITHOUT the picture of the bar above the bar. Put that into your semiotic pipe and smoke it. Is it any wonder that Foucault's essay "This is Not a Pipe" was written here?

Re: “Best Hike

There are also several good spots to have sex. Or alternatively, on a warm
summer evening, to watch other people having sex.

Re: “Best Philanthropist: Kind-hearted generosity from a donor who makes a difference

I have gotten to know Dr. Idowu in the last couple of months and I have to say, he is an amazing fellow. The work that he and his team are doing is beyond comprehension. They are all doing it as volunteers and without the support of any government or other agency. Just the support of friends and supporters of his cause.

Check out his developing website. They are going on another mission to Nigeria and will need as much help as they can get. Checkout their website and contribute what you can.... medicalcareforchildren.org

Re: “Best Bartender

For a bartender with these same qualities in the Oakland area - visit Maxwell's Lounge. On Saturday evenings and some Fridays you will find me there - the vixen of cocktail mixing.

Re: “Best Golf Course

No disrespect, but to say Tilden is the best golf course in the East Bay is like saying Tim Herron is the best golfer on tour. Some great scenery, absolutely. An excellent value for the money - no question. But to put it ahead of better courses such as The Bridges, Wente, Hiddenbrooke, Oakhurst CC (to name but a few) is just wrong.
Again, these courses are more expensive...but for a reason. However, I would agree that dollar-for-dollar it is the best. How's that?
