Re: “Mama's Royal Cafe Reopens Under New Ownership

Will be interesting to see how it turns out. It used to be a good place to eat with staff that was a bit rude on purpose.

Re: “Highland Hospital Surveillance Stirs Concerns

Given the huge amount of violent crime in Oakland, and that Highland is where most victims end up, it's a good thing. It helps law enforcement. Something which is anathema to some people.

Re: “Who's Profiting from Oakland's Gun Violence?

Thomas Collins "...the people of this country, save the women..."

Good lord man. You do realize you just said "the people of this country, save 51% of the people in this country..." You have exposed yourself to be a fool and someone interested neither in truth, reality, or dissenting opinions. Go back to the 19th century.

Re: “Despite Canceled Hearing, Oakland Councilmembers Still Plan to Talk About Controversial ICE Raid

The hearing had been scheduled on October 12. A month before the Internal Affairs complaint was even filed. The hearing was not about the IA complaint. It was about OPD's actions during the West Oakland ICE raid. Schaaf announced on November 21 that she would support a policy to prevent all future OPD cooperation with HSI or ICE.

Re: “Highland Hospital Surveillance Stirs Concerns

Why just Highland? We don't have a license plate reader scanning every plate and sending them to the Department of Homeland Security in the parking lot at the Alta Bates or Eden Medical Center emergency rooms. Why is that? The rabble has a right to be roused.

Re: “The Return of the Crematorium

Gary Patton, I don't usually agree with you but in this instance it's one hundred percent agreement.

EBX and it's staff have become every bit as bad (and the reporting as poor) as the old Hearst organs. The only thing missing is "Remember the Maine!"

Re: “Highland Hospital Surveillance Stirs Concerns

By the way, from the photo, the LPR appears to be on hospital property. As the article notes, the Hospital put it in. They know about it, just as they know about the officer at the previously mentioned wards (and main entrance) who take an image of all visitors IDs. Interestingly enough, no one collects ID information at check in to the ER... Where people ACTUALLY SEEK TREATMENT.

Oh wait... Are we saying Mike Katz-Lacabe was unaware of that? Or is it just not as emotionally charged? Fact checking much?

Re: “Highland Hospital Surveillance Stirs Concerns

Probably for the same reason that all visitors to the maternity and pediatric wards are ID checked and signed in.

This is true of every hospital I've visited in the past 10 years. It's not unique to Highland.

Yet again DBG and EBX engages in rabel rousing demagoguery.

Re: “The Return of the Crematorium

Did I send for you? Hey. Gary Patton. Thanks for reading both articles and observing the language that was used in which, I don't know if a article and an op-ed that's released on same day could have used your language. It's an universal language, when you live this Injustice you don't have to learn or read about it to write about it. It's speaking truth to power. #EJ4ALL

Re: “Monday’s Briefing: Oakland Gets 255 Legal Pot Permit Applications; Another State Legislator Accused of Sexual Harassment

Back in the day, many decades ago, when it was cool to be a stoner (especially as opposed to an alky), no one could even have hallucinated that pot would become a mainstream economic sector.

Personally I still think it's an hallucination, but I haven't had a toke yet today.

Re: “The Return of the Crematorium

Hey EM, if you are going to co opt my comments about the General Plan and Zoning being the problem in an article you wrote to the Tribune, next time at least give me some credit in a footnote. It is what writers with integrity and not a political agenda do. Also, if you want to play the race card as your main offensive weapon, at least be historically correct. In the case of West Oakland, in the early 20th century, most of the residential populations around industry were Italian, Portuguese and Irish. Blacks did not make the great migration to Oakland from the south until the 1940's and 50's. Similarly, in East Oakland, many industrial land uses predated the construction of residential neighborhoods that came later and ultimately served that same migratory population. Just because Black people are there now does not always mean that these uses were placed there because Blacks lived nearby. Not that there are never cases where that is a factor. But just as historically correct is that these uses chose locations because of economic factors like proximity to the Port as well as convenient rail and truck transportation.

Re: “Why Aren't There More Latinx Nights in Oakland?

Yeah. I put this all on the venues.
No matter the genre, all parties can fail. The venues should take 2-3 chances on every party. New parties should start monthly on a weeknight, and if they are successful, either be offered a weekend monthly or take their party elsewhere.

Some parties may need more than 2-3 tries to get off the ground. Word of mouth still works. And venues should know which parties will need more than 2-3 tries to marinate into something that will last.

If you're a Latinx DJ or promoter, please, please keep trying. Last year, last month, last week might not have been the time for your party to jump off. But this month, or next, it could be CRACKIN'.

Re: “Overland Country Bar and World Ground Cafe Shut Their Doors

Oh, no!!!!!!! Starved for years without a country bar and music spot and now after a couple of years it's gone. Sad loss for us country music fans and Oakland. I'll be dead before another one comes to town.
