Re: “Kainbigan Team's New Restaurant Craft & Spoon Opens Next Week in Uptown Oakland

Well that sucks, congrats and good luck but I don't think we needed another fru fru kale place, especially when good Filipino food was hard to find - gotta serve the gentrifiers though

Re: “Picán Restaurant in Uptown Oakland Closing ... For Now

I went for the first time a few years ago and had a biscuit that melted in my mouth and some delicious pork belly. I went again for brunch and dinner a few more times and it seemed that each time they had a new cook who wanted to experiment with a different food technique. I looked forward to seeing what the hiatus will bring food wise and decor and I appreciate them for taking a change back in 2009.

Re: “Picán Restaurant in Uptown Oakland Closing ... For Now

I took a friend there for a special dinner last year, inspired by a CheckPlease review on KQED... some items were good, but a tough and smallish piece of "signature" fried chicken was a disappointment with overpriced side dishes required to make a meal.
The coup de grace was my friend's request for some sparkling water being met with a fancy, imported bottle of something brought to the table without comment. It later showed up on the bill as a $19 charge. Really?! Never went back. End of story. Have a nice "hiatus" Pican. And au revoir.

Re: “Picán Restaurant in Uptown Oakland Closing ... For Now

Thanks for all the great food. Haters gonna hate, but I had great food, great drinks and great times there for years. Sure there were misses and a couple of bad service moments, but that's the industry. Thanks for making a great place for POC's and soulful White folks to get their grub on and socialize with style. You can always find a soul shack somewhere. Pican brought Black elegance and power to the center. The food wasn't cheap, but the cultural contribution was enoromous.

Re: “Picán Restaurant in Uptown Oakland Closing ... For Now

The food was overpriced and underwhelming.

Re: “Picán Restaurant in Uptown Oakland Closing ... For Now

Not sure about your analysis of Oakland politics but I CAN tell you the restaurant industry is going through major changes (the outcome of which is up in the air) and full service restaurants are struggling and/or closing throughout the Bay Area.

Re: “Picán Restaurant in Uptown Oakland Closing ... For Now

EBX is where the narrative goes to thrive, such story tellers. Pican was the gentrification they wanted to see. The restaurant cost around $1.8m to build and it's always been expensive, from day one. I ate there in 2009 and thought the cost was too high, similar to a high quality place in SF but in a cheaper desolate part of Oakland. Oakland businesses are dieing because Oakland (the City and its political class) only know how to operate in an idealistic vacuum AND milk a good thing until it's dead. It's been doing the same thing for 40+ years with the exact same results. We're only thriving because regional pressure has become so incredibly enormous.

Re: “After Fifty Years, Nellie's Soulfood Restaurant Says Goodbye

I'm so disappointed that food is the best . I am from New Orleans, La . And Mrs. Nelly cook just like New Orleans. I'm here in Oakland to stay and don't feel like cooking and I'm looking for her. Best cooking I had yet in Oakland California. I'm so sad . I pray to God her kids carry on her legacy. Best cook yet!! Be Bless

Re: “Complex Oakland to Focus on Coffee and Creole Food Instead of Clubbing

It means all those new residents will complain about the noise. Clubs do better where there are not a lot of people sleeping.

Re: “Complex Oakland to Focus on Coffee and Creole Food Instead of Clubbing

This sentence doesn't make any sense:

"Oscar Edwards saw all of the shiny new high-rise apartment buildings planned for Downtown Oakland and figured the writing was on the wall: There probably wasnt much of a future in running a nightclub in that neighborhood."

Why would you think a nightclub doesn't have a future when a ton of new people are about to move in nearby? If anything it probably means a lot more business.

Re: “Corporate Beer Overlords AB InBev To Open Golden Road 'Craft' Beer Garden in North Oakland

We are still accepting signatures on our petition through 4 pm Monday 4/10 voicing our concerns to City of Oakland planning commission and city council regarding the impact of Golden Road on the neighborhood in terms of noise, traffic, parking and pushing small local brewers out:

Re: “Corporate Beer Overlords AB InBev To Open Golden Road 'Craft' Beer Garden in North Oakland

To be fair AB InBev can do whatever they want, but they should identify them selves, as they can open a local business that never technically need to make money. For this reason I am not a fan of false flag craft breweries as they effectively seal market share from actual homegrown businesses.

The permitting application can be seen here:
To share your comments on the permitting process contact:
Planner Rebecca Lind at (510)238-3472 or by email: or district 1 councilman Dan Kalb Phone: (510) 238-7001 Email: addressing Bureau of Planning/Zoning case #: PLN17004 : the proposed beer garden by Golden Road at 320,322, 330, 40th street Oakland.

The public comment period ends tomorrow 4/3/17.

Re: “Corporate Beer Overlords AB InBev To Open Golden Road 'Craft' Beer Garden in North Oakland

As a long time resident of this neighborhood, I am very concerned that there is no oversight of development in a coordinated way- we are very overdue to have an overlay plan. Otherwise, we continue to deal with the same issues and erosion of quality of life on a "one development proposal" at a time. This responsibility is part of our city council members job- that is Dan Kalb. Our block organized around the same issues for the housing now under construction at 4055 Broadway- 47 units with only 26 parking spaces. Over a year ago, we requested that he start working with the neighbors to develop an overlay plan-- i can only say that he made no effort to do so, his communication in general was poor and there was no advocacy on his part on behalf of neighbor concerns.
