Re: “Ethics Commission: Oakland Councilmember McElhaney Violated Conflict-of-Interest Rules, Accepted Illegal Gifts

So... While this council member has been screaming for low income housing, she violated the ethics of the office she holds to block construction of new housing in blighted West Oakland... And EBX has backed her solidly! I don't think Boss Tweed could have done it better.

Re: “Ethics Commission: Oakland Councilmember McElhaney Violated Conflict-of-Interest Rules, Accepted Illegal Gifts

Let me guess: they "ruled" she violated ethics laws, but will somehow be found innocent, and considering how corrupt Oakland city govt also is, they'll probably give her an award.

Re: “Parents, Teachers, and Students at Oakland Charter School Accuse Leadership of Mismanagement

I am sorry to see a school and its community go through such difficult times. I love Oakland and all of you deserve the best. We all need to operate in good faith. If you start there and always remind yourself that you need to meet that standard every day, that's a strong foundation. When things go wrong, instead of hunkering down and hiding out, face the people honestly. I have seen administrations go into bunker mode too often and it doesn't work -- ever! I have made hundreds of mistakes and some of them turned out to be the best learning experiences because I dealt with them openly and even my detractors appreciated that. I always keep an eye on Oakland schools and forgive my two cents, but when I see so many students writing I feel compelled to chime in.

Re: “Report: When It Comes to Mortgage Loan Servicing, Banks Are Still Failing to Comply With the Law

Hi people ,iam Larissa April,Last year, i had health issue and due to this reason i was advised by my doctor to always move on a vehicle in order to avoid the total loose of strength since my place of work was far from where i and my husband reside , i told my husband about my plans to get a loan since there was no other means so that i can get a good car of my choice but my husband instructed and advise that i shouldn't apply for a loan online because almost all loan lenders online are fake and fraudulent in there actions so i had to suffer the stress of not moving on a car for some months and i later made up my mind to apply for an online loan because i wasn't having any other choice at that point but still i was advised by my siblings to apply for a bank loan instead of an online loan especially due to the current ongoing news about online scammers but all effort to get a loan from my bank didn't work through because i was having a bad credit report so with all this issues i had to get my mind crossed by applying for a loan online although i wont say that i was so perfect or very careful for not been scammed but i strongly believe that it was the lords mercy of God that directed me to the AMEIR MILLER CLASSIC FINANCIAL INSTITUTE . the great news is that i got my loan funds very fast and easily and this came to the surprise of my husband and my siblings who had earlier on discouraged me on this online loan issue and the most surprising of all was that i was granted this loan funds at a very cheap interest rate if %2.5 percent ... i am grateful for this car loan and i am also grateful to the AMEIR MILLER LOAN FOUNDATION FOR THERE transparency and total support , you can reach them on email : ameirmillerclassicloaninstitute@yahoo.com or theameirmillerloanorganisation@gmail.com , text +1 252-585-5014 ameirmillerapprovedloans@usa.com ,ameirmillerfinancialinstitute@gmail.com

Re: “Federal Judge Orders City of Oakland to Fix Internal Affairs and Criminal Investigations of Police Misconduct

Burris is a hypocrite. He supported a totally frivolous civil suit against my father and I costing us about 130K when a person who borrowed money from us sued after breaching the loan contract AND defaulting. He's no Robin-hood. My father and I are white and the people who sued us are minority race. They had unlimited resources to pretty much harass us into giving his clients what they wanted.

Re: “Oakland Looks to Close Owner Move-In and Occupancy Loopholes, Reduce Evictions and Harmful Rent Increases

The City's own surveys show that public concerns about housing affordability, displacement and homelessness rank higher than concerns about crime. In which case, the City is actually focusing on issues that are of most concern to Oakland residents.

As for this claim: "many who have had sweetheart rent deals for decades and quite honesty want to keep them for life. That is big motivator for making claims that may not actually be true", what actual documentation do you have that this is widespread?

The vast majority of Oakland renters are paying far more than 30% of their income for rent. That's not a "sweetheart rent deal".

Re: “Oakland Looks to Close Owner Move-In and Occupancy Loopholes, Reduce Evictions and Harmful Rent Increases

I would want to see actual documentation concerning these alleged evictions. There is no actual proof presented in the article, just allegations by people, many who have had sweetheart rent deals for decades and quite honesty want to keep them for life. That is big motivator for making claims that may not actually be true.

The city council seems hell bent on attacking property owners and private property rights by passing anti property owner laws, which I believe are unconstitutional. They just keep adding on more rules, more laws. Pretty soon most landlords are going to sell their properties because it won't be worth the trouble.

Given the high crime rates, gangs and drug problems in Oakland you would think they could be using their time to tackle the really important safety issues that have plagued Oakland for decades.

Re: “Federal Judge Orders City of Oakland to Fix Internal Affairs and Criminal Investigations of Police Misconduct

One wonders exactly what the Mayor and City Administrator spend their publicly-financed time doing.

Especially in the light of the Mayor's campaign promise to make public safety the number one priority. That means making OPD work in every aspect of policing, including that small thing we call ethics.

Should we assume that the Mayor hired her pal as City Administrator because they both were fundamentally committed to improved public safety and police reform?

Or should we assume that both the Mayor and her Administrator live on Mars?

Re: “Arson in Oakland: Is Someone Torching New Developments?

The phrase "God gave Noah the rainbow sign, no more water the fire next time" was the source of the Baldwin quote above. It should be understood that the fire referred to in this passage was divine in nature and potential origin. The idea of humans invoking and exacting such a level of biblical judgement is cause only for concern given the arrogance and limitation endemic to mankind.

Re: “Arson in Oakland: Is Someone Torching New Developments?

Fulani. perhaps you are forgetting that fires can and frequently do KILL people. No matter where you stand on gentrification, the notion of burning down constructions sites/buildings by way of protest is absurd. Constructing a rationale for arson like this is in my view irresponsible. It could only serve to encourage such criminal activity.

Suddenly concerned about the new condo construction across the street. Will it be torched and will my buildings and neighboring buildings be evacuated or even catch fire? This is not the way to stop gentrification, higher rents, and displacement.

Re: “Arson in Oakland: Is Someone Torching New Developments?

This is what real class warfare looks like. People are not just gonna sit around and do nothing as all options are taken from them. Whats real is this isn't a crime committed by some homeless drug addicted street person. The people behind these acts are willing to take the stand against the contiuning exploition of the Bay area by Realtors and Developers who's main concern is always profit over people,to the next level. James Baldwin said it best."THE FIRE NEXT TIME" is now.

Re: “Arson in Oakland: Is Someone Torching New Developments?

This shocking news of another building fire at a large housing development in the east bay should be a wake up call for everyone to the need for more not less new construction.

It is irrational to think that if we stop building new housing it will somehow keep people from moving to Oakland and gentrifying the city. Yes Oakland is a desirable place to live and is close to Silicon Valley and San Francisco where many of the jobs in the new economy are being created. If new housing is unavailable then older housing stock will be sold or rented to those who can pay the market price and even more will be displaced from the city.
It now appears that the housing crisis will spiral even more out of control as developers decide it is not worth the risk of building here. People should support new development for all income levels and not scare it away!
Developers also need to consider more security at their building sites and fire sprinkler systems should be installed as soon as practical at an earlier stage of construction to deter or prevent those who would consider arson as a city planning tool

Re: “Arson in Oakland: Is Someone Torching New Developments?

What is almost worse then this huge fire at a new housing development in downtown Oakland is the reaction many people seem to have. "People feel like they are being priced out of living in Oakland" is somehow given as justification to burn down a building you think you couldn't afford to live in.
Doesn't anyone think about 20-30 years in the future when the same building might have become a senior or other affordable housing when presumably newer buildings come on line for higher income people to live in? And what kind of a city would we have now if people had burned down anything they couldn't have afforded? People please get a grip!

Re: “Arson in Oakland: Is Someone Torching New Developments?

the Emeryville fire was 105 housing units.

I think the standard figure is 3 people per unit. Using that, it seems this latest fire took out about 230 units in one way or another (700 displaced is the reported figure)... So we're looking at over 300 hundred units NOT housing people... Putting MORE pressure on housing at all levels, especially the low end.

Add to that the 400 units, last I heard, blocked by activists in the MacArthur BART vicinity... That would likely have reduced vehicle emissions as well as providing housing.

Just gotta love this town.

Re: “Arson in Oakland: Is Someone Torching New Developments?

Thank you for reporting on this article. It doesn't take a meteorologist to tell you that it sunny and hot outside when it's sunny and hot. The amount of fires on under construction multifamily, mixed use buildings in Oakland (including the one in Emeryville literally across the street from Oakland) is much higher than everywhere else. Local officials can't just come out and say it was arson for political reasons, but it's obvious to everyone that it is arson, because the odds are so small there would be so many fires in Oakland on the same type of projects, in the same type of areas in such a short amount of time. There are some serious issues going on in Oakland that are preventing the city from further urbanization.

Pains me to see this happen. Looked like a nice, well conceived and designed mixed use complex that would have likely stood for over 100 years and provided housing for literally thousands of people over that time-span. No one was getting displaced by this project because it was built over what had been a surface parking lot. I wonder what the broader intentions of the arsonist were. If it was to stop gentrification, this will only make it worse, but perhaps he intends to accelerate it. Either way he/she has been able to cause great carnage with impunity, which is depressing. No one should be able to get away with that.

One other angle no one has brought up is the environmental impact of such fires. Tons of timber and construction materials destroyed, tons of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere as well as particulate matter and chemicals. We all have to breath this stuff, especially those in close proximity. These kind of fires are environmental disasters.
