Re: “College Avenue Safeway Expansion

. . . safeway already has all of that stuff for people who bother to shop there rather than the smaller shops. It willl hardly make a difference.

Re: “College Avenue Safeway Expansion

Nicole, you are wrong about Walmart too. Great products at low prices.
Any business that tries to use the law to stop competition deserves to be put out of business by better businesses.
There's nothing sacred about local business. I've seen this absurd attitude by the remaining book dealers around here that we have to support them because they are local instead of cheaper books and many more out of print books at lower prices and no sales tax at Amazon.
The merchants you list are a mixed bag, some I like and some are just too costly for my wallet.
You do bring up one valuable point albeit unintentionally.
Often businesses use the force of government to stop competition.
I have no particular opinion per se on the Safeway proposal other than it ought to be decided on the market by consumers. I'm not thrilled at their takeover of Chimes but so far nothing has changed there except one great person had to leave to avoid nepotism charges.

Re: “College Avenue Safeway Expansion

No, Mike, the cartoonist is not expressing anti-business attitudes at all. In fact, the attitudes expressed are in support of business. 8 businesses in particular: Cole Coffee, Yasai Produce, The Meadows Florist, Southie Sandwiches, Vino! Wine Shop, Ver Brugge Meats, La Farine Bakery, A Cuppa Tea. Supporting local business while critiquing the the second largest supermarket chain North America is not an anti-business attitude.
And I was wrong about the Target. A Walmart would be much more appropriate.

Re: “College Avenue Safeway Expansion

No, Nicole, we will let the market decide whether Safeway sells food or not.
If any college students, drunk or otherwise, break the law, they should be vigorously prosecuted. I bet the same people who protest Safeway would protest that too. The cartoonist is just recycling the predictable anti-business
NIMBY attitudes of some people around here who pretend to speak for everyone.

Re: “College Avenue Safeway Expansion

Perfectly stated. Thank you, Justin.
I've been a resident of this neighborhood for almost a decade and have disliked the Safeway expansion plan from day one. Not good for the neighborhood. I'm not even sure half of what Safeway sells could be considered food. Lets tear down the adjacent block and put in a Target too. It doesn't get more all in one shopping convenience than that. The drunk college kids on Friday and Saturday nights will be stoked they have more than the Safeway to meander through.

Re: “College Avenue Safeway Expansion

Here's the bottom line, if more prefer the all in one shopping convenience of the Safeway, it will prosper. If they prefer to patronize the pricier small establishments it won't. But it's up to the consumers.
I'm tired of certain Elmwood NIMBYS opposing a Trader Joe's in Berkeley while they shop at their Whole Paychecks. In accordance with Express policy I won't mention any names but I think your readers can figure out a few of them.

Yawn, another predictable Party Line attempt at cartooning.

Re: “UC Tuition Hike

No problem, Steven. Jose is right of course.
It makes one wonder when was the last time DeFreitas visited the campus ?
The irony in the stupid cartoon is so thick that you could it with a knife.

Re: “UC Tuition Hike

Makes no sense. The school is predominantly non-white.

I thought it was ironic. I missed it.

Re: “UC Tuition Hike

Is that why UC is largely Asian ? Another mindless cartoon from a Becky O'Malley reject.

Re: “ vs. Local Business

Seal, that won't be happening as most states are not progressive hellholes like
NY and CA. Most don't want taxes at the expense of jobs and happy consumers.
The Evil Empire are those brick & mortar pirates who have been ripping off the book buying public for decades.
Go Amazon !

Re: “ vs. Local Business

The Amazon tax is welcome, but it's too little, too late for many small local booksellers. Now the Evil Empire of retail has decided that cutting off its nose to spite its face really is a viable strategy, and plan to end their relationship with their California 'affiliates'. Let's see what they do once all 50 states make the logical decision to tax online purchases.

Re: “ vs. Local Business

Another stupid DeFreitas leftwing cartoon. What he doesn't get is that many of us like to have a nice place where we can purchase books or videos or whatever without giving to some greasy political porker's pockets.
I've been able to get more out of print books from Amazon in the last ten years at affordable prices than I was in the previous forty years from nasty, overpriced second hand book dealers or overpriced new book dealers.
This tax is just another subsidy to incompetent businesses to stay afloat because the consumer in the marketplace is voting to liquidate them.
I personally usually boycott these overpriced crybabies with their overinflated egos.
Finally why is the Express hiring yet another Berkeley Daily Planet reject like this cartoonist ? Wasn't Scheer enough ? Ever Gammon took over there has been a steady slide to the Left at the Express.

Re: “Oakland Library Closures

My letter to Ms Quan & Co> . . .

Dear Mayor Quan,

I could fill 2-3 pages with reasons why libraries should not be taken away from the public, ESPECIALLY for children and people who do not have access to the internet, but one suggestion that would generate quite a lot of money: I am in England as often as I can afford and always grumbling about having to pay 50p for dvds and cds, but at least the libraries stay open!

How about charging $1 for dvd rental (certainly cheaper than most video stores) and say .50 for cd's, half that for children? People would not like it very much to begin with but would quickly become used to it and grateful they still have their libraries!
You might try in some manner, soliciting more suggestions from those of us who would surely be "victims' if this should come to be.

Ms Marjorie Sutler-Collins

P.S. I watched Fahrenheit 451 after about 15 yrs . . .here are some videos for you and your staff to watch & ponder over, you may think them over dramatizing but for all intents and purpose, gone is gone!
and they will read what? shall indeed be reduced to the backs of cereal boxes!

And just for a bit of fun . . .
for a bit of fun

Doesn't look a lot like Jean Quan, who proposed closing Oakland's libraries.
