Re: “The Economics of Blue Bottle's $16 Cup of Coffee

About half-a-century ago advertising agencies came up with the same principle: "sell the sizzle not the steak."

Folks in Oakland who like coffee should look at local coffee importer Sweet Maria's website. You can buy green coffee from all over the world there, roast it at home and have a fine cup at a lower cost than buying grocery store coffee.

One of the major problems with commercially-produced coffee is that it is 'way over-roasted so that it has nothing other than the taste of burnt beans. Then you add milk, sugar and other flavorings to make it palatable.

Luke, I wanna know what you think about Icey Cream's donut ice cream sandwich!

Re: “The Economics of Blue Bottle's $16 Cup of Coffee

Stop writing the same tired story over and over again every time you hear about a cup of coffee that costs more than $10.

Re: “Pal's Take Away Abruptly Shuts Down Operations at Oakland's Firebrand Artisan Breads

Oh, man, that's sad. On another note, maybe Pal's can move into a less super hip area and charge less than $12 for a sandwich?

Re: “Bun Mam Soc Trang Closes Suddenly Due to Expired Lease

We lived two blocks away for 7.5 years, moving away in 2009. Vida's Fish was in the space then and we're so sorry that we missed Bun Mam Soc Trang -- the food looks and sounds wonderful. Sadly, there is really *nothing else* to lure people to that corner of Oakland, so this closure is a real loss.

Re: “Mid-Week Menu: Oliveto Does Toast, Rockridge Gets an ‘Improvement Club,’ and Casa Cubana Rebrands as a Steakhouse

"An early contender for the least tactful bar or restaurant name of the year..."

Yes, heaven forbid anyone try to improve anything. If the fear is that this bar is about to gentrify Rockridge, the bar is a little late.

Re: “Antoinette Flames Out; Dominique Crenn Unfazed

She should be horribly embarrassed. She may be a creative and hands-on chef but obviously she's an awful operating partner. Shame on her.

Re: “Eddie Huang Doesn't Care About the New Shit in Your City

Those pork buns look amazing. Any place in Oaktown to get them?

Re: “Eddie Huang Doesn't Care About the New Shit in Your City

Agreed very interesting piece and why I think it's critical that old and new neighborhood restaurants that are the real deal owned by folks from that culture get supported. Aztecali is my latest fave for what they are doing--serving high quality food at a reasonable price but here are so many others as well all over Oaktown. Koryo at 44th and Telegraph (sushi and udon noodles etc) is another--not pretentious with boxes stored in the restaurant and a fish tank and it's even in the Temescal--hope it never changes one iota. .Thanks Luke for trying to keep them coming and making sure they are on our radar.

Great piece, Luke. So envious you got to spend some time with Eddie - he's like a hero to me. Can't wait for that new book drop. - Charley

Re: “West Oakland Gets an East Coast-Style Italian Deli

I took my grandmother there for lunch yesterday; met nothing but super-friendly folks on the way there! Loved the tuna sandwich!

Re: “West Oakland Gets an East Coast-Style Italian Deli

I've been 40 years on 26th street a few blocks away. This deli is a gem for our area. Just like Brown Sugar at the other end of 26th street, If you put out good food and atmosphere you will do great. I love West Oakland and am so happy i can walk up the street to get an awesome meatball sandwich.

Re: “West Oakland Gets an East Coast-Style Italian Deli

An east coast classic italian sub would never have mustard and would have diced pickles.

Re: “West Oakland Gets an East Coast-Style Italian Deli

I love this place and what they do for our neighborhood! The food is great and are bringing life back into a struggling area. And the fact that everyone envolved in this place is actually from here. And with affordable prices, pinball, good food and babes whats not to like?

Re: “West Oakland Gets an East Coast-Style Italian Deli

Seriously great food and great vibes. It'll be tough to get me out of there once the beer starts flowing.
