Re: “El Cerrito and the Highway of Epicurean Delights

Larb Thai is one of the best spots in El Cerrito. Admittedly the name threw me off -- doesn't quite speak "culinary excellence" -- but it's worth checking out if you like Thai.

Izakaya is a type of establishment (or menu), not a sushi bar!

Re: “There's Nothing Stale About Hayward

Great list! Vals is a classic. Im at Pho Ty on Mission Blvd right now, and Ill put their Pho up against anything in Oakland. It aint pretty but damn is the Pho tasty!

Hayward is also home to a world class hot sauce company called Lucky Dog - they were in your magazine a few years ago & I tried them out after your article was published. Absolutely my favorite sauce company now, and theyve won a ton of awards.

Looking forward to trying the Tongan food!

Re: “El Cerrito and the Highway of Epicurean Delights

We bought some Lebanon Baloney at The Junket the other day. It's a very hidden gem close to Trader Joe's.

And oddly the Himalayan Grocery is a UPS "Access Point" so you if you can't get safe delivery to your home you can arrange to have it left here.

Re: “Wander to Richmond for Some Worldly Wonders

Mississippi catfish is horrible. I have no idea why they still in business. Who is eating their food still? Food is horrible. Bland. Tasteless

Re: “Can I Recycle That?

This article could use an update. Further, leadership from those who collect the recycling to educate the public is clearly lacking - as I learned more here and noted there is ZERO info on why we came here - clean ash from burning untreated wood. ZIP. Therefore, reading this, I see mountains of trash not being handled properly

Re: “Best Place to Buy Stylish Glasses

Phoenix Optical is selling the biggest bunch of stories I've ever heard. There has never been any France factory nor is the owner a doctor. Truth is he spends a lot of time in China for the young, really young company while awaiting his new batch of horn frames stamped made in France on the temple. Then he returns and adds several zeros after what he paid to the cost and laughs about it over his next extravagant meal. He's a swindler with a degree in B.S., not a medical doctor as he claims. Wake up friends this is the real deal...I learned the hard way you don't have to.

Re: “Best Eyeglass Boutique
But don't get all pince-nez on us

This author obviously did not bother to fact check whatsoever. Ray Ascher the owner is a swindler who buys all his frames in China then takes the $12 pair of horn he brings home and adds a few zeros after the twelve. I know i worked for him. And his mother was the cleaning lady for an optician she never touched a frame except to dust them off. Oh one more thing he is not a Doctor either. He should have a degree in B.S. though he's good at that.

Re: “Get Your Drink On At These New East Bay Breweries

Please, can some adventurous Oakland craft brewery stop kowtowing to the IPA trend (that is what it is at this point) and regularly brew at least ONE of the following:

1. German altbier
2. Extra Special Bitter
3. Irish red
4. A porter and/or stout without it being "smoked," or containing chocolate or lactose
5. Brown ale
6. Baltic porter that isn't served in a precious 3 oz. glass
7. Old School Asshole Colonialist style IPA (yeah, you can use that name by giving me a 10% cut of sales)
8. Scotch strong ale that isn't served in a 3 oz. glass as if it's made of gold
9. CASK ALE, which will entail a neck-bearded brewer to boast of his unparalleled maintenance of cellar temperature (in Celsius, of course)

Thanks,
Bitter Old Fart (you can use that name for the ESB...again, a 10% cut of the sales for me)

Re: “In Praise of Oakland’s Koreana Plaza

The solution to pedestrian safety is simple: reduce potential conflict points; don't increase them. There's a sidewalk, and the gutter, and pedestrians use the sidewalk (and crosswalks), and don't play in the gutter. Two-wheeled gnats, impelled to keep moving to maintain balance, darting in and out of blind spots and buzzing pedestrians, don't even belong in the mix. (Climate change? That's why we'll soon all be driving electric cars, and there goes your talking point!)

Telegraph is a thoroughfare between Downtown, North Oakland, and Berkeley; the gutter is not a playground. "Road diets" (such as the one on Tele) deliberately abolish passing lanes, forcing drivers to creep along single-file and grind to a halt whenever someone needs to park, deliver, or turn.

Swat the gnats!

Re: “What to Do When ICE Raids Your Restaurant

Dear Jasmine, this article is great and I'm so sad I'm reading it this late after publication. Should you receive this, please reach out to me, would love to catch up. To ya'll commenting, thank you for engaging in this essential and practical discussion. Coming from an immigrant family myself, and being an attorney, I have these discussions with friends and family not nearly enough and am touched that the East Bay Express is giving space to this issue.
