Re: “How City Hall Crushed Occupy Oakland

This "hit" piece on Mike King's book stinks! I think I will put edition of the EBE on the bottom of my chicken coop where it can get the kind of validation it deserves.

Clearly DBG wasn't there to experience what Mike and thousands of others experienced on a daily or weekly basis. "Six years ago, did the people really occupy their town squares to break bread with the dispossessed, and talk about radically refashioning the economy and political system from the ground up?

They did, and they mostly lost. And it wasnt the riot cops who beat them. " What a narrow-minded, clueless response to an exercise in understanding T.A.Z. (Temp. Autonomous Zone), how direct democracy works, consensus decision making, skill sharing, teach-in's, food gardening, art making, info distribution, media making.... just disgraceful that DBG felt the need to shit on a beautiful authentic Occupy....unlike that sanitized event in SF where an event tent with steel 3 sink cleaning station w/ organic food delivered from rich "supporters of the cause" (ha ha) to the campers in Herman plaza. what a joke that was.

Re: “Berkeley To Consider Banning Plastic Straws

As far as I can see there is no need for a plastic straw and take out cup manufacturers will have to adapt. Maybe people can be compelled to bring their own cups? And while we are at it also ban single use plastic bottles NOW.

Re: “Parents, Teachers, and Students at Oakland Charter School Accuse Leadership of Mismanagement

You're surprised a corporate (charter) run school is not transparent, non-responsive and corrupt? Somehow, because it's run by and for native Americans makes it immune to human corruption?

Gimme a break.

Re: “Berkeley To Consider Banning Plastic Straws

The magic of straws went when they started to paper-wrap them so snuggly that we couldn't blow the wrapper across the room.
The greater issue, of course, is plastic wrapping and packaging..of all kinds. Those who recycle can see clearly just how much this fossil-based wonder adds to the trash (or, IS the trash).

Re: “How City Hall Crushed Occupy Oakland

As a San Francisco Occupier, I did feel like a toxic cloud drifted in from Oakland. I dreaded their participation in our events and was sad to see the pig baiting and anarcho-nihilism spread to our side of the bay. (And no, it was not just black people.) I never had much interest in seeing windows indiscrimitorily smashed, and trying to squat a building that the cops have already surrounded is a recipe for chaos.
If fact, we did reach many of the homeless and formerly incarcerated and others who had no previous experience with the left, as well as "the usual suspects." But this contained its own problems. Different people had different worldviews, different ways of communicating, different ways of, um, resolving conflicts. One hundred percent consensus works, if it works at all, among a small group of friends who all share the same general activist philosophy and goals. Occupy never had that. It's meeting tried the patients of seasoned activists. Others simply could not abide by the process at all. And, while some people submitted to the grueling process, others simply declared their actions "autonomous" and did what they wanted, and somehow this was OK. But in the end, it was the difference between those who thought that untargeted smashy smashy was a legitimate strategy and those who did not that killed the movement. That issue, sadly, has not been resolved.
Occupy SF, the only one I really spent a lot of time in, was a beautiful moment, but not a sustainable one. Hopefully, we, and other activists and would be activists, can learn from our successes, and our failures.

Re: “Parents, Teachers, and Students at Oakland Charter School Accuse Leadership of Mismanagement

Ladnar seems unaware that footage exists of the board president saying he was free to come back the very next day.

Also, Ladnar seems unaware that one can both be pushed out and quit.

Also, you claim he used Mimi to get his message out, which is very untrue.

Re: “Parents, Teachers, and Students at Oakland Charter School Accuse Leadership of Mismanagement

The American Indian Model School Board Meeting on May 16, 2017, the Board Members announced Dr. Perry can come back and reinstated his position as Head of the School. The Board Present Steven Leung said, " He can come back to school tomorrow." The word reinstated is not reapply!!!! If you don't know this word, please look it up in the dictionary. We have video to support the above statement. Thank you!

Re: “Parents, Teachers, and Students at Oakland Charter School Accuse Leadership of Mismanagement

Doctor Perry "QUIT!" He wasn't pushed out! When given the opportunity to reapply for his job, he said "no!"
He also used Mimi Pham to get his message out to teachers and parents after he had QUIT.

Re: “Parents, Teachers, and Students at Oakland Charter School Accuse Leadership of Mismanagement

If superintendent and board collude in corrupt behavior, then change in one leadership position will not bring the sought-after change.

Also, have the parents and teachers articulated what different policies and procedures look like?

Are there individuals trusted enough by both parties to serve as arbitrators to achieve agreement on both short and long term goals?

Finally, let's remember that education is a noble pursuit. Our children depend on us to provide it; our society depends upon an educated citizenry.

Re: “Parents, Teachers, and Students at Oakland Charter School Accuse Leadership of Mismanagement

This is about whether private management is corrupt as charters are publicly funded privately managed schools. The idea that private is better or less corrupt than public has not been the historic situation with the American Indian Schools. In fact the history of American Indian is associated with corruption.

Re: “How Nature Heals: Why East Bay Doctors Are Prescribing The Outdoors To People Of Color

Potent article! As a member of a Northern California Nonprofit, I get to see first-hand how kids with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) benefit from summer camp. Many of them have never been camping. The majority of them are Oakland residents. But most of them live in the concrete jungle and rarely get that feel of the outdoors. Gratefully, many of them are veterans now.

Secondly, I continue to work with an organization that was created to educate and encourage children of color to learn about the critical relationship between insects and human beings and about ecosystems and diversity of landscapes usually in parks. Sadly, the vast majority of the beneficiaries are not children of color because many of them have limited access for the reasons you mentioned.

Lastly, I send a monthly Wellness Flyer to churches on health matters that disproportionately affect the African-American community. In it, I usually find opportunities to mention sunshine, mountains, vista points... Yet I ask the question, when did so many African-Americans become Vitamin D deficient? BCHO

Re: “Oakland Councilmembers Accuse Mayor Schaaf of 'Bait and Switch' With Soda Tax Revenue

SO... After carefully reading the post by Ms Kaplan on 5/1/2017 (well after the statutory time limit for the mayor to appoint), we should note the council MAY fill the vacancy.. And since they are so outraged there is no advisory board should have at a bare minimum submitted suggestions. Ultimately, the council had and does have final say over any appointment made to this board.

This would seem to indicate the the council bears substantial responsibility... Including the author of the measure (and vice mayor).

Self serving Tammany Hall methods as usual.
