Re: “United Nations Expert Describes Oakland and California's Homeless Crisis as 'Cruel'

Most of these people are NOT from Oakland and San Francisco Oakland and San Francisco
are remagnets for them because the people are too tolerant of their lifestyle, the weather is temperate, and you can sleep outside in a tent year round. It is like a paradise for them
The solution is to set boundaries with them and tell them that they cannot live in a cardboard shack like people at the Tijuana border with San Ysidro. It is also not acceptable to live inmass with others in a dilapidated RV at the big box store parking lot, or for that fact, anywhere in the city limits
All of the surroundeing communities of San Francisco and Oakland do not tolerate homeless people or ramschackled RV uncampments. THey have run them out of town. It is about time for Oakland and San Francsico to do
I have absolutely no sympathy for them , in any way shape or form.

Re: “AB5 is Bad For Journalism

Also, I would love to know exactly how many of your freelancers contribute more than 35 articles a year. And it seems that one thing you could do under AB5 to comply while hiring freelancers is hire more freelancers to make sure nobody goes above to 35 article threshold.

Re: “AB5 is Bad For Journalism

You dont explain why hiring a worker on an hourly basis to write a 125 word piece would be ridiculous or cost-prohibitive. Why would it be?

Re: “Stirrings of an Oakland Tax Revolt Could Hamper Parks Maintenance

The well was really poisoned by the whole AA debacle. City just lost in Court on the majority vs.2/3's for passage issue. The Mayor wants to appeal the loss. That perpetrates the divisions and loss of trust. And the litigation did not reach the poisonous AA language issues---forced donations to Oakland Promise and the 30 year term. If the City/Mayor won't fold the persist on AA campaign, I fear renewal of Measure Z will be in jeopardy.

Seems like Hi-Fidelity, next door and related to the awesome Amoeba Records on Telegraph in Berkeley, is the place to find these. I'm going to try them, too!

Re: “Stirrings of an Oakland Tax Revolt Could Hamper Parks Maintenance

Count me among those who do not trust Oakland City Government and won't agree to tax increases. We pay taxes and you don't provide safe and clean streets. Measure AA is an absolute insult to taxpayers/voters and shows the disdain of the city towards its citizens.

Re: “Vegan Mob Is an Overnight Hit in the Former Kwik-Way Building

Good for you!!!. I wish you GREAT SUCCESS in your culinary journey!! I was born and raised in East Oakland, and enjoyed Kwik Way hamburgers when they first opened. Price was very cheap. Do not remember, but they were dirt cheap. I live in Walnut Creek now, but come to Oakland on occasion. Must try you!!!

Re: “Let's Hear It for the ... Boy?

I saw the play. Twice. I was astonished by how any ideas fing expression and in expression, peraps more devastatingly. The characters, all individuals, become friends. If not with each other, with me. I have not laughed as ofte, as often through tears, as well as being terrified, deeply moved, challenged and rewarded. What this plat seems not to be as well-regarded as Angels In America rather stuns me. It bursts traditional theatrical story-tearing, constantly surprising in form as well as content.

Re: “Stirrings of an Oakland Tax Revolt Could Hamper Parks Maintenance

The City tried to raise the LLAD tax in 2012 with a rigged vote. The votes of homeowners, apartments, and other properties were weighted by the proposed increase in their LLAD assessments but the Port of Oakland's vote was given three times as much weight using its total proposed assessment -- Port votes were manufactured out of thin air.
Home and business owners voted against the tax, but with the fake Port votes, the City declared the increase had passed -- until this newspaper among others exposed the scam. Rather than face legal and political pushback, the city council decided not to collect the tax increase.

Larry Reid was on the council then. The City should listen to his soundings of opposition to a tax increase.

Re: “Stirrings of an Oakland Tax Revolt Could Hamper Parks Maintenance

To the Editor:

We were taken aback by the statements around Holly Mini Park that appeared in the photo caption of the East Bay Express article, "Stirrings of an Oakland Tax Revolt Could Hamper Parks Maintenance". The renovation work at Holly Mini Park has not yet begun. And while the park has not yet been closed, there has also not been a re-opening event. The reference to such an event in the photo caption is categorically false.

Holly Mini Park, is a small pocket park located on Holly Street, by 98th Avenue. The Oakland Parks and Recreation Foundation in partnership with the Youth Ventures Joint Powers Authority, the City of Oakland's Public Works Agency and the Oakland, Parks, Recreation and Youth Development department has been working for the better part of two years to work with the local community on planning the rebuilding of Holly Mini. The new park is being funded with privately raised money and measure KK infrastructure bonds. The design plans for the park were developed with the full participation of local residents during a yearlong series of events and community meetings. At the last such meeting, in late September some 30+ residents, ranging in age from 10-70, turned out to review four proposed plans for the park. Their opinions were vocal and strong --- and they were heard. The final plan for Holly Mini features only elements (such as a gate) that the community asked for. Holly Mini is truly a community powered park.

The larger point to be made is that no community can be fully activated and safe without a place to gather. Oakland parks should offer such a place. That not all of them do, is not a reason to disinvest and turn away from. Rather we should all strive to make our all of parks safe, inclusive of all, equitable, and well maintained.

Re: “Monday's Briefing: Undocumented residents can now serve on state boards; Teenagers can sleep in on school days

Our civic leaders are supposed to have learned their lesson about funding extravagant sports monoliths, but here they are again, weakening environmental regulations, paying for transportation to the monolith, and weakening the state's rules for non-complying waterfront uses. On top of all that, the proposed design is friggin' ugly.

I'd like to see the As stay, but at what cost?

Eligible, yes. Thanks to both of you for catching these typos.

Um, no.

I am not white.

I do not own property in Oakland.

The property I do own, I live on, I do not rent.

I have never been a landlord.

Sorry "commonterry", your stereotyping missed the mark. (As stereotyping so often does.)
