Re: “Hayward Police Chief: There Is No Video of Fatal Police Shooting of 16-Year-Old Elena Mondragon

The shooting of pregnant 16 year old Elena Mondragon occurred in City View apartment complex owened by Essex Property Trust, a multimillion dollar cooperation. City View is an area where criminal activities are continuously growing out of the management's control, as they downplays crime to its residents in order to continue increasing the rent. I don't condone the shooting of Mondragon for being in that area with the wrong friends. Yet, the shooting took place in the City View community comprises of over 500 units where criminal background checks in the past was not done in order to move in. If I was a police officer, I'd be quick to think of protecting myself first in that area.

Re: “City Emails: Many Dublin Residents Think Undocumented Immigrants Are 'Felons' Who Will Turn Their Town Into a 'Cesspool'

By the way Gary Patton, I was just looking through the old Milo Berkeley post and was surprised to see you comment there too (what can I say, I'm always late when it comes to the news or looking through articles), and I know you're probably not going to read this post, but if you do, I just want to tell you and everyone that anarchism itself is not as scary as it sounds and not just for white males; it's not just about breaking windows either. People of all races adhere to this centuries old political ideology, including Asians, African-Americans, Native Americans and Hispanics. I recommend you do some research on it; wikipedia's a good start. You can also visit an anarchist bookfair in SF. Trust me, anarchism is not that scary. As a Chinese-American, philosophically, I personally base my anarchism in Taoism and the Buddhist tradition of non-violence.

Some people end up Marxist or liberal or conservative or alt-right , but I ended up as an anarchist feminist (anarcha-feminist) because I grew up in a very diverse area, stayed in Dublin long enough, faced and witnessed sexism, racism and bullying everywhere in the Bay Area (including San Francisco), ask why some people are homeless and some are not, paid attention to the news, and took critical thinking and history courses in high school and college. Anarchism just came naturally to me as it is anti-authoritarian, based on direct democracy, and social and economic equality.

So to bring all of this back to this topic, I hate the fact that what was once a growingly diverse sleepy little quint Irish town (with awesome St. Patrick's Day parades) waiting to become the famous little sister to Hayward, San Leandro, Oakland and Berkeley has now become famous as a town full of bigotry, which is far from the truth and much more nuanced, because not every single resident in Dublin or Livermore or San Ramon thinks the same way or eats the same food (part-whole fallacy). I judge a place by whether I feel comfortable expressing my far-left feminist anarchist views as a person of color in public. Dublin has always been a place where I feel comfortable doing so everywhere I go without people screaming at me or giving me weird or dirty looks. Maybe they hide their feelings well and secretly want me gone, but I really doubt that. I know some people in Dublin espouse racist or prejudiced sentiments, but just as many are against it, as the article states.

Re: “City Emails: Many Dublin Residents Think Undocumented Immigrants Are 'Felons' Who Will Turn Their Town Into a 'Cesspool'

I live in Dublin and please don't think all of us think this way. I'm Chinese-American and philosophically an anarchist feminist (yes, I'm a loony far-lefty so you know what I'm going to say next); yes, we far-left anarchists do exist in Dublin (or maybe I'm the only one that exists) and our opinions in Dublin are very diverse. I had no idea that this was going on and just found out about this by doing a search on my city to see if there were anymore racist things happening (there was a racist graffiti that read "stop the Asian invasion of the city in Dublin" back in 2010 with a white nationalist "national-anarchist" symbol which I didn't know about until years later by doing a casual search on flickr).

As a Chinese-American, I'm particularly sensitive to this sanctuary issue because I know how we were seen as the "yellow peril" (and evidently still are by some white nationalists in Dublin) and were excluded from entering America for 60 years via the Chinese Exclusion Act enacted in the 1880s; Chinese women weren't even legally allowed to come here until the 1940s. They were smuggled in the US or sold into prostitution or indentured servitude where many didn't live that long. It was the only way they could come here. If there are any Chinese voicing support for some explicit (or implicit) anti-sanctuary policy, we need to remember our own history and how we were once excluded and how some of our own people had come here illegally in the past. Donaldina Cameron, a Christian Caucasian woman, sheltered undocumented Chinese girls who came here illegally in San Francisco Chinatown during 1900-1934. Donaldina never once asked to check their immigration status.

EVERYONE is welcome here, no matter your race, economic status, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion or immigration status. I've lived here for 16 years and love this city so much and value our diversity and acceptance of others. I personally haven't witnessed much discrimination in Dublin aside from several isolated incidences (maybe 3-5 incidences in person?) and am very disappointed to see such thinly veiled bigotry aimed specifically toward Hispanics. One's immigration status or race does not make an individual dangerous. We need to stop scapegoating and committing logical fallacies (occam's razor, overgeneralizing, correlation does not imply causation) because we want easy answers to complex issues. By the way, well said, Gary Patton; those are facts.

Re: “Parents, Teachers, and Students at Oakland Charter School Accuse Leadership of Mismanagement

Hey Vanessa Ly,

I am not sure if you attend the School Board Meeting on 5/16/2017, but I am attaching the link below so that you can take a look, the Board announced Dr. Perry to come back and reinstated his position as Head of the School. The superintendent has been telling other people that Dr. Perry is sick or he needs to re-apply for the position, she told a lot of people that she doesn't want him to leave. She is lying. This video is the truth!!! Don't listen to her. The OUSD funded the school with textbooks, school supplies, field trips, and more. There are many other Charter Schools that got the funds, but they utilize it really well. They provided a lot of activities for students to learn and a lot of field trips. Regarding of the lunch, I want to let you know that, my son school lunch had a fly in it!!! The fly was dead!!!! Look at your lunch before you eat.

Re: “Parents, Teachers, and Students at Oakland Charter School Accuse Leadership of Mismanagement

Looks like the AIMS school administration and board have adopted the same secret decision making that OUSD administration and board have practiced for years.

We've tried small schools and charter schools. Even the few high performing charters like AIMS seem to self destruct and devolve into money grabs. We tried a state takeover that left us with same problems plus weakened school board and transparency.

With Vos in power, we wouldn't want a Fed overseer for local schools (even if there was such a thing).

The only consistently "good" thing about the Oakland public/charter school system is that it keeps the cost of housing down as parents leave if they can when their kids reach shool age.

Re: “Parents, Teachers, and Students at Oakland Charter School Accuse Leadership of Mismanagement

Hey, my school is that one! So here is what happened, my school's superintendent and principal were in the office of the principal, Dr. Perry, and the superintendent, Ms. Wood Cadiz. A few seconds later, Ma. Cadiz started to ask questions and fired him!!! She has been lying to us students stating that he was very very sick!!! SHE IS AN EXCUSE!!!!!!!! WE NEED MORE FIELD TRIPS!!! WE NEED BETTER ACHOOL LUNCHES, WE NEED SUPPLIES AND BOOKS!!!!!!!! I MEAN, COME ON!!!! IM ONLY A 6TH GRADER!!!!

Re: “Parents, Teachers, and Students at Oakland Charter School Accuse Leadership of Mismanagement

Actually Earnest, if you investigate this particular charter school, you'll find it has danced on the edge of losing it's accreditation for a number of years. When charter schools in general show good results, they do it by expelling or other wise encouraging "problem" students to go elsewhere (cherry picking the students).

Their stats look better but they are NOT what they appear to be.

Re: “Parents, Teachers, and Students at Oakland Charter School Accuse Leadership of Mismanagement

Charter schools are businesses. Local public schools are not. That is the problem with charters. They should not exist. Period. They are a shadow system that only drains resources.

Re: “Parents, Teachers, and Students at Oakland Charter School Accuse Leadership of Mismanagement

Doesn't the American Indian School system in Oakland have the best results in graduation/placement? Must be doing something right. Their high school is rated #1 IIRC.

Too bad the parents don't appreciate that.

Re: “Parents, Teachers, and Students at Oakland Charter School Accuse Leadership of Mismanagement

You're surprised a corporate (charter) run school is not transparent, non-responsive and corrupt? Somehow, because it's run by and for native Americans makes it immune to human corruption?

Gimme a break.

Re: “Parents, Teachers, and Students at Oakland Charter School Accuse Leadership of Mismanagement

Ladnar seems unaware that footage exists of the board president saying he was free to come back the very next day.

Also, Ladnar seems unaware that one can both be pushed out and quit.

Also, you claim he used Mimi to get his message out, which is very untrue.

Re: “Parents, Teachers, and Students at Oakland Charter School Accuse Leadership of Mismanagement

The American Indian Model School Board Meeting on May 16, 2017, the Board Members announced Dr. Perry can come back and reinstated his position as Head of the School. The Board Present Steven Leung said, " He can come back to school tomorrow." The word reinstated is not reapply!!!! If you don't know this word, please look it up in the dictionary. We have video to support the above statement. Thank you!

Re: “Parents, Teachers, and Students at Oakland Charter School Accuse Leadership of Mismanagement

Doctor Perry "QUIT!" He wasn't pushed out! When given the opportunity to reapply for his job, he said "no!"
He also used Mimi Pham to get his message out to teachers and parents after he had QUIT.

Re: “Parents, Teachers, and Students at Oakland Charter School Accuse Leadership of Mismanagement

If superintendent and board collude in corrupt behavior, then change in one leadership position will not bring the sought-after change.

Also, have the parents and teachers articulated what different policies and procedures look like?

Are there individuals trusted enough by both parties to serve as arbitrators to achieve agreement on both short and long term goals?

Finally, let's remember that education is a noble pursuit. Our children depend on us to provide it; our society depends upon an educated citizenry.

Re: “Parents, Teachers, and Students at Oakland Charter School Accuse Leadership of Mismanagement

This is about whether private management is corrupt as charters are publicly funded privately managed schools. The idea that private is better or less corrupt than public has not been the historic situation with the American Indian Schools. In fact the history of American Indian is associated with corruption.

Re: “Oakland Councilmembers Accuse Mayor Schaaf of 'Bait and Switch' With Soda Tax Revenue

SO... After carefully reading the post by Ms Kaplan on 5/1/2017 (well after the statutory time limit for the mayor to appoint), we should note the council MAY fill the vacancy.. And since they are so outraged there is no advisory board should have at a bare minimum submitted suggestions. Ultimately, the council had and does have final say over any appointment made to this board.

This would seem to indicate the the council bears substantial responsibility... Including the author of the measure (and vice mayor).

Self serving Tammany Hall methods as usual.
