Re: “Gentrification Station: Why Oakland Still Says NO to Uber

Regardless of whether it's Uber occupying the Sears building or not, Oakland needs a steady influx of revenue. Those millions of dollars Oakland NEEDS to fight homelessness and improve it's infrastructure (just two things the City needs to work on), won't come if they keep buckling to the demands to STOP GENTRIFICATION. I'm tired of hearing, "I was born and raised in Oakland, and I rent here, and they owe me an opportunity to afford to live here..." Well guess what, I was born and raised here, own a home here, and Oakland owes me the opportunity to actually benefit from things my PROPERTY TAXES say I'm entitled to. Well maintained streets, decent schools, low crime, businesses to spend my money, etc. I haven't gotten jack from this Oakland EXCEPT a higher tax bill EVERY YEAR. So until I start getting something in return, I don't care about what the anti-gentrification community has to say.

Re: “Oakland Has a New Two-Year Budget, but Only After a Night of Divisive Infighting

These politicians continue pandering to a discriminatory liberal agenda that promotes bigger Bureaucracy promoting dependence among the poor, very high taxes on the middle class, BACK-ROOM DEALS, a hamstrung police force, and super high crime rates.

Re: “Naming Names: These Officers Are Responsible for the Failed Oakland Police Sex Scandal Investigation

The OPD is a gang of useless criminal thugs leeching off the taxpayers, refusing to show up for anything short of murder, worst solve rate in the country. Nobody even bothers to call the cops anymore.

Fire and prosecute bad cops, lower their bloated pay (inexplicably these yahoos make more than most cops in the Bay Area), get rid of the overtime they use to play six-figure meter maid, demand 50% or more of their resources go to investigating crimes instead of writing traffic tickets, and bring them to heel. We're sick of this legally-sanctioned street gang run amok.

The more regulations the more unregulated market, administrations never learn

Re: “California to Require All Marijuana to be Lab Tested. What Will Happen to Weed That Fails the Lab?

A basic tenant of good manufacturing practices (GMP) is that quality cannot be tested into a product, it must be built in to every step of the process. Testing is an important part of quality control - and should be part of any good regulatory structure. However, it is a reactive process. Cannabis regulations would be much more effective at protecting health and safety if they made operators meet GMP standards- not to mention the cost savings.

Re: “Oakland Has a New Two-Year Budget, but Only After a Night of Divisive Infighting

Gee, I guess we can't complain any more when the police and fire don't show up quickly. Well, who needs them. We're a peaceful, safe city with few serious crimes ...

I suppose defunding improvements to police and fire is really about anger over the departments' arrogance and failures. And taking advantage of the anger to boost other projects. Looks like Trumpification to me--cutting off our nose to spite our face.

Re: “Oakland City Council Passes Divisive Proposal to Establish Violence Prevention Department

The comments here explain why such a common-sense move would seem "divisive." Shame, judgement and fear of minorities "taking" from middle-class whites drives the cycle of hatred. An ounce of prevention is worth a (at least) pound of cure, and not enough has been done to build the safety net of girls who are being sucked into sexual slavery or boys who are vulnerable to the peer pressures of violence. Coordinated and sustained efforts are needed to create safety for all. I have high hopes for this project and applaud the city council and the people. We can change the dynamics of bullying.

Re: “On the Phenomenon of Burger Boogaloo — and the Oakland Couple Who Makes It Happen

Great, great music--but two major complaints.

1. Only two alcoholic beverages sold: A craft beer...and Pabst Blue Ribbon.

2. It's called Burger Bugaloo...and only one vendor was there selling burgers. A tiny...expensive....grass-fed....yuppie burger.

That makes no sense! Have a dozen burger trucks!! Not one!! Why would you think of rejecting a quality vendor that wants to sell burgers at the Burger Bugaloo?????

Re: “City Told Developers to Fix Infamous West Oakland Artist Warehouse. Instead, They Demolished It.

1919 Market, Oakland: A quick recap -- After years (decades?) of neglect both by the previous owners and the residents (possibly out of fear of loss of the space... Ghostship/warehouse anyone?). As a result a change of hands of the property, the residents took to issue to the city and the result was the building was red tagged and an order to fix the issue was ordered. Because it was red tagged, they were removed. The owners, rather than repair, unexpectedly demolished.

My questions are: What follow through was there after the unauthorized building demolition? What council district did this happen in? What city council member has been silent on this, even at the time? Why? Why no follow through of any kind?

Like it or not, the "disruptive" mindset applies not just to these developers, but to crypto-anarchists of all stripes... "I can do what I want to obtain my goals by any means necessary. Leave it to others to stop me if they can! I have a higher calling!" Witness the budget meeting this week. Hell, taking up residence in an urban building not properly permitted for residence is of the same mindset.

Gang, you really can't play the cards both ways. Either anarchy reins and only the biggest, baddest bullies have the rights they force on us, or we obey the rules. If you get to break the rules and be disruptive, so does they other side... in a never ending escalation.

I think I learned this in kindergarten.... Maybe pre-school. It was a long time ago.

Re: “On the Phenomenon of Burger Boogaloo — and the Oakland Couple Who Makes It Happen

2015 was great, 2016 was an entrance line nightmare. Mr. Final says he has the line thing figured out -- I hope so, but just splitting the VIP and GA doesn't sound like a solution.
by the way, my comments last year -- about standing in line for 2 hours, and then just giving up and giving my tickets away -- wasn't grumbling. It was a customercomplaint, and a plea to the promoter to get it right this year.
Thanks, Kirk Baugh.

Re: “Making Oakland a Real Sanctuary City

Will this sanctuary protect Native Oaklanders from the horrific violation of our human rights by the city government of Oakland? We really need some help to escape these Jim Crow policies and abuse of our Constitutional rights. How dare they try to capitalize on this failure of a National Policy to portray themselves as saviors. They cannot be the savior when they are the same people removing human rights from innocent residents under their care and the entire collection of these same politicians are currently under federal scrutiny I am offended by this publicity stunt and hypocrisy they are pulling in this vote. Free Oaklanders from Oakland City Government Fascism!

Hope that there were plenty of cops on hand in city hall in case things got too damned democratic.

Democracy is definitely Oakland's major problem.
