Re: “Picán Restaurant in Uptown Oakland Closing ... For Now

EBX is where the narrative goes to thrive, such story tellers. Pican was the gentrification they wanted to see. The restaurant cost around $1.8m to build and it's always been expensive, from day one. I ate there in 2009 and thought the cost was too high, similar to a high quality place in SF but in a cheaper desolate part of Oakland. Oakland businesses are dieing because Oakland (the City and its political class) only know how to operate in an idealistic vacuum AND milk a good thing until it's dead. It's been doing the same thing for 40+ years with the exact same results. We're only thriving because regional pressure has become so incredibly enormous.

Re: “Oakland City Council Fights Over How to Reduce Homicides, Violence

The City is broke and borrowing money to fix potholes, and these clowns want to hire more highly paid bureaucrats to tell us how to fix something we know how to fix.

More jobs.
Fewer segregated communities. End housing projects and establish zones where those receiving housing assistance can live. (Meaning that everyone does not end up in close proximity in a large poor community, but are spread throughout the city.)

Re: “Oakland Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan Sponsoring Legislation to Cut Police Ties with Immigration Enforcement

Separating from ICE as much as possible has
brought about powerful improvements in San
Francisco public safety, as well as community
integrity and solidarity.

I would strongly recommend that Oakland follow suit and go even further than San Francisco in separating itself from ICE.

Re: “Amid Calls to 'Defund' Oakland Police, City Settles $989,000 Claim of Sexually Exploited Teen 'Celeste Guap'

Were the FAT police holding US flag at Game 2 doing so on City time or even overtime. OMG--let some HS kids do it for free! Did Larry Reid pay for his ticket? I sense a job at Oak Port Authority coming his way...al those cops musta had desk jobs. Aren't their annual physical tests for these porkers??

Re: “Oakland Mayor Literally Raises A's Flag Over City Hall An Hour After Raiders-To-Vegas Vote

Mayor Libby. question? Were the OPD members looking a bit pregnant holding the US flag at Game 2 on the City Payroll at the time? Or perhaps even Overtime? Why not let some high school kids , even in PAL leaves, do it for free.

Re: “Oakland Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan Sponsoring Legislation to Cut Police Ties with Immigration Enforcement

It's about time these agreements stopped being signed in secret. "The hearing uncovered a previously unknown memorandum of understanding between the Oakland police and ICE that allows OPD officers to work in task forces alongside ICE agents". How is that even possible? It may have been signed in secret, but the decision whether or not to continue it will be in public.

Re: “Oakland Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan Sponsoring Legislation to Cut Police Ties with Immigration Enforcement

And while she's at it add to the legislation that any agreements the COP (or any other agency head) wishes to engage in with other agencies be ratified by the city council.

That should put a stop to this for once and all.

Re: “Oakland City Council Fights Over How to Reduce Homicides, Violence

"Residents have long demanded officials to do more to quell violence, pushing for strategies that rely less on law enforcement and more on community engagement..."

That's what real community policing is all about. Establishing trust between law enforcement and a community which long has been abused by law enforcement. Without trust, the community, understandably, does not
offer the local knowledge which is vital to violent crime prevention.

Real community policing in Oakland would be a long, difficult journey. So we have ineffective groups called NCPCs with beat cops assigned. The beat cops change every few months. Last NCPC meeting I attended, the beat cop and his sergeant took the trouble to explain why they couldn't do anything for us.

City hall in Oakland just doesn't do the long and difficult. City hall likes to spend money on consultants and committees. This lets pols say they are doing something.

They aren't doing something. The violent crime and all its consequences--traumatized families with traumatized kids who can't succeed in school, lack of economic development where it's needed, etc.--will continue.

Re: “Updated: Oakland Spent $72K Closing 162 Homeless Camps in 2015

First of all, the city doesn't OWN the properties you propose they sped tax payer dollars rehabilitating. Oh that's right... It doesn't matter who owns it. Just take it.

Lets see how you like having your property taken. We know the homeless don't like it. Hence the completely valid complaints of their losses when city workers destroy their property.

As to the city and county helping... They need to money to provide that help. If they had it, the city might possibly have it. But the fallout from prop 13 and the machinations commercial property owners use within it are strangling all of them... While iPhone/Macintosh toting kewl art kids benefit from Apple et al stashing over a trillion dollars overseas so as to NOT pay their fair share. The kewl kids "vote their conscience" or don't vote at all so we get the corporate toady (the orange man), instead of the lesser of the two evils.

Bah! You may as well demand Unicorns and a money tree in the back yard.

Re: “Town Business: Oakland Isn't Meeting Its Affordable Housing Goals; Is the City Discriminating in Contracting?

"You can have less affordable housing units permits issued and yet MORE affordable units built."

With a ten to one market rate unit to affordable housing unit in the pipeline I kinda doubt whether there will be more affordable housing units actually built than affordable units.

"The author has no ideas, of course, but just wants to cherry pick data."

The commenter should add that he picks cherries too.

Re: “Alameda Sheriff Deputy's Arrest of Street Fruit Vendor Goes Viral and Draws Criticism

No truck, so he was dropped off. He is blocking the sidewalk at the wheelchair curb cutout. No virgin plastic bags or paper shown. Perfect, uniform fruit. Twelve perfect mangoes; dozens of bananas. No way he grew this.

On a public walkway the question always comes up; "What is a lot of people did this? It is a public WALKWAY. It is not a sitting area.

Re: “Town Business: Oakland Isn't Meeting Its Affordable Housing Goals; Is the City Discriminating in Contracting?

Nice trickery with the numbers. A couple of points:

1. You cant assume 100% of market rate housing will be built, when you know this is nowhere near the case based on historical data. The author knows this and leaves it out.

2. In 2014, 78% of housing built in Oakland was affordable
(https://oakland.legistar.com/View.ashx?M=F…) . The Author leaves out what was actually built in 2015 in 2016.

3. This is permits issued. NOT actual units built. You can have less affordable housing units permits issued and yet MORE affordable units built. See above point.

4. The average cost to build an affordable housing in Alameda county, according to the State Housing Department, is $345k. The 59 units being built at Acts Full Gospel Church is closer to $500k/unit. $100million allocated from the city would build at most 300 homes, which would still be less than what the report says we need of 840 affordable units. Yet the author says we need more? Say its 1000 units to make the author happy - that's $300 million, and ~25% of Oaklands budget - how do we raise revenue, or make room in the budget for that? The author has no ideas, of course, but just wants to cherry pick data to make it look like we only have an affordable housing issue, and its the result of the "rich" not caring, rather than we have a housing crisis that's impacting everyone at all income levels, and that everyone is to blame.

Re: “Amid Calls to 'Defund' Oakland Police, City Settles $989,000 Claim of Sexually Exploited Teen 'Celeste Guap'

Let's see... Ms Brooks has been sitting on the council for how many years while this travesty in the OPD has been going on, but it's the mayor at fault?

Allow me to refresh you on some history;

Ms Brooks was first seated to the council in 2002, and vice mayor in 2011.

Ms Schaaf; first seated to the council in 2010 and elected mayor in 2015... Well after the start of this cesspool... Which Ms Brooks was in office for the entirety of.

And SOMEHOW it's all the mayors fault?!

Gimme a break!

I'll refrain from saying what I think exactly as she sues people who buy ink by the barrel. I, as a simple citizen of Oakland can not stand up to that.

Re: “New Dating Site for Pot Users Has High Hopes

Why are people still finding it difficult to get their ex back when someone like priest tokubo is there to help them. My boyfriend broke up with me a week ago. We dated about 4 months. Everything was so perfect and good between us. He told me he would take me ring shopping and we would settle down and have a baby together. Everything was great. We met each other families and everyone told us we were perfect for each other. Out of nowhere he surprisingly left me to be with another girl, so i met a friend who gave me this Phone number +2349037990322 of this spell caster tokubo to contact him, i contacted him because i was so heartbroken and don't know what to do with myself but after 3 days of contacting Mr tokubo, my lover came back to me. if you want your ex or lover back you can call him with that phone number or add him up on whatsapp because he on whatsapp with that phone number above
