Re: “Oakland Police Hold Secret Ceremony Honoring Several Officers Accused of Mishandling Celeste Guap Sex-Crimes Investigation

Call the police for help..... not a chance.
Don't need them shooting at me. If you got bad meal from a restaurant you would not go back. Boycott the police. They are about violence and fear. It's that simple.

Re: “Oakland Approves 'Safe Havens' for Homeless Camps and Services

Two sides to a coin here. On one side, helping these folks with sanitary facilities, better shelter, etc. makes good humanitarian sense. Great!

On the other side of the coin, the blight of these encampants is destructive to the safety of the community, the willingness of people to conduct business nearby as well as property values for those that are not homeless. These actions make Oakland an attractive haven for the homeless which will only grow the population and put us in a death spiral.

One solution to consider is for the City Council members to locate these homeless encampments in their front yards. They will be providing the space for a compassionate solution and ensure the encampments are dispersed throughout the city and not become little ghettos in areas that will be invetiably destined to be "out of sight, out of mind."

And, of course, the members of the Council will experience first hand, the social, safety and economic impact of fostering the growth and development of these encampments. They will "live in the shoes" of the merchants and citizens that live nearby and they can even move in to the encampments.

A total 360!

Re: “Loving Vincent, and Perhaps Murdering Him, Too

the spectacle of the film is at first nearly overwhelming. But, once one gets used to seeing the Vincent mode on a constant level, it is a pleasure to watch. The conjecture over Vincent's cause of death is quite plausible and the doctor's forensic analysis of the wound's initiation...not done by Vincent's hand...is very compelling. The course of Armand's journey following Vincent's path is not at all tedious...but very enlightening as drama and as narrative. All rings true for the viewer and makes this film a joy and hopefully a success in all ways for its creators. loved it.

Re: “Oakland Approves 'Safe Havens' for Homeless Camps and Services

I'll just say it's all Band-Aids! We were all living in affordable housing as OAkland residents. But that affordable apartment from 1999 is now in an unaffordable apartment because in 99 it was $700 and now it's $4000. This whole concept of building affordable housing because we all got kicked out of our homes is ridiculous. I would've rather kept my home and had a newcomers build her own fucking condos in Brooklyn Basin. In 1999 the city Council didn't know who owned the empty property is in downtown Oakland. Oaklanders couldn't even open up a shop in downtown Oakland. Then somehow magically all of a sudden the business improvement District's in the city created opportunities for people outside Oakland. But then again we all know what this is called!

Re: “Oakland Approves 'Safe Havens' for Homeless Camps and Services

Do we need more gov't housing in Oakland? Is no one concerned about incentivising homelessness? Are there routes for these people to pull themselves out of homelessness in Oakland? If so, why isn't there more focus on this as a long-term solution vs the "give a man a fish" scenario?

Re: “Will Oakland Adopt a Mansion Tax?

Tom : Respectfully disagree, . We have a progressive tax already-income tax. Why burden a property owner with a larger cost to support city services when most public administration research indicates higher income property owners use far less municipal services? That City of Oakland needs to re-focus its municipal serves to include fire, police, water, waste collection, and staffing and up-keep of recreation-parks, fields, and our estuary lake.

Don't buy the argument that if you choose to invest in a home in Oakland you should be stuck with financing projects and programs that rarely impact you or your family.

Re: “Cases Against Police Officers Who Sexually Exploited Underage Girl Known as Celeste Guap Fall Apart

There is plenty of evidence to charge them. Lets reflect once the cat was out of the bag, Richmond PD accessed victims compensation and had Celeste send all the way to a rehab in FL, where the rehab worker illegally tried to restrain her and inject her with something, and when Celeste bit the guy in self-defense, they threw her in Martin County jail with a 300k bond. Within hours O Malloy told the media that she couldn't prosecute the cops without a witness, and who knows how long she would be held on these major felony charges. SEX WORKERS rallied around Celeste and raised teh money for an attorney and she was out of the jail and back in Oakland in 10 days. The prosecutors have tons of text messages where the cops admitted that they were paying her, running background checks and providing her info on upcoming stings. Why would they need the victim to testify with all this EVIDENCE, and the counter in that the cops held a secret award ceremony. Now usually trafficking victims are threatened with arrest if they refuse to testify, but when it comes to holding predatory cops accountable, they get probation and get to remain on the force, so they can exploit more women. The city of Oakland would not have settled for 1 million dollars if there was no evidence. https://www.eastbayexpress.com/oakland/oak…

Re: “Oakland Approves 'Safe Havens' for Homeless Camps and Services

Well, we could just arrest these people, but that is not going to clean up the gutters, or your sidewalk in front of your doorway, giving them porta potties, and washing stations is the proper action to take. Thank god we are'nt haveing a break out of hepititus A, like they are in san diego? In fact since the porta potties, and the wash stations have been delivered, along with trash cans and scheduled pick up, i have'nt noticed anyone urinate or defacat in my doorway anymore, and it was happening daily, sometimes walking up to see it in action, all summer long. So thank you cal trans, and thank you oakland residents for your help with building materials, and thank you volunteers for your help with construction. Encouragement and positive reinforcement is the way to go! Work with the situation, dont lock it up, push it away. The fact of the matter is the world is overpopulated! Multiplication, plain and simple. Long live the arts!

Re: “Will Oakland Adopt a Mansion Tax?

The transfer fee should be a percentage of the appreciation not the sale price. After all, apprection depends on how well the city is managed in terms of: safety, schools, streets, parks, etc. The city needs a piece of that appreciation to maintain progress. Furthermore, It is our culture of fairness that the fee be progressive.

Re: “Oakland Approves 'Safe Havens' for Homeless Camps and Services

For the past few years the mayor refused to acknowledge there was a problem. No one on the council, as far as I know, has spoken up. One, McElhaney, whose district has the huge encampment at 27th and Northgate actually seems to want to encourage expansion and doesn't recognize that besides being addicts - many belong in mental facilities.
Yesterday, one woman was sitting totaling naked, on sidewalk across the street from a 45 unit condo bldg. at 24th and Telegraph trying to light a campfire at about 9AM. A couple weeks she tried the same thing in a doorway to our bldg. Imagine what could have happened if she had been successful. This time we called police. One cop said they can't arrest these people because they have been instructed that "being homeless is not a crime". Of course a lot of these people DO VIOLATE city codes by depositing urine and feces in doorways. Camping in doorways is also illegal.

Re: “Cases Against Police Officers Who Sexually Exploited Underage Girl Known as Celeste Guap Fall Apart

Judges doing their jobs and seeing past the media hype and BS. The only exploitation in this case was done by the East Bay Express Darwin Bond Graham and Ali Winston. Shame on you for your false reporting and over hyping this case. Several good officers had their careers ruined based on one sided statements by the alleged victim. Nancy O'Malley should be ashamed of herself, no evidence to charge these officers. Vote Nancy O'Malley out!

Re: “C CASA Joins Lineup at Public Market Emeryville

Jenni Li is missing out -several of the places have long lines on a regular basis, and our favorite, Hot Italian, is always full - thankfully we can usually find 2 seats open since all the tables, except 2-tops, are shared. I don't care for Mexican but hubby loves it and C CASA sounds like quality good eats! I'm excited!

Re: “Oakland Approves 'Safe Havens' for Homeless Camps and Services

Is whining about whining actually just whining?

The problem in Memphis has no relationship to the problem in Oakland.

Re: “Will Oakland Adopt a Mansion Tax?

Everybody pays the same percentage rate. How is this not fair? People purchasing expensive real estate pay more total dollars than those paying less expensive homes.

The city of San Francisco should not be held as a model for anything, let alone a housing transfer tax. How much market rate housing is available in San Francisco for someone of modest or middle class means able to buy? Nearly half of the city's civil servants live in the East Bay. It's a crummy idea.

Perhaps if Dan Kalb and the other elected and appointed officials of Oakland better forecasted and spent their current revenues more effectively than as practiced, a solution to soak the people who've invested in Oakland would not be thought credible. Solution- build and remodel housing with less local restrictions. A San Francisco solution? No thanks.

Re: “Oakland Approves 'Safe Havens' for Homeless Camps and Services

Come on Hobart! Can we find a way to deal with the blight that goes with the camps? Memphis has seemingly found a way:

http://prospect.org/article/battling-bligh…

Oh, wait... That means people actually DOING something instead of whining and waiting for it to be done for them, then whining more that it wasn't done they way they wanted.

BAH!

What he proposes, autonomous devices to hunt and kill our "enemies" is in fact the premise of the first "Terminator" movie. Truth is stranger than fiction. The total and staggering immorality of this leaves question as to whether Yoo is in fact a human, or a cyborg.
