Re: “East Bay Paratransit Bus System Leaves Drivers Broke and Riders Often Stranded

Sounds like a pretty typical outsourced, unsupervised operation. As public operations the Transit agencies that outsourced this need to be called to account for this and perhaps a revue of the contracts they've let to see if they were even plausible given the services to be provided.... And of course, as always, follow the money.

Who wants to make bets on investors in the French company?

Paratransit was mandated by the ADA, so it ought to be operated by a governmental agency. Clearly the private sector is not up to the job. And why is it being run by a foreign company anyway? How about investigating giving the contract to Lyft?

Re: “Young Professionals Only? Housemates Accuse Landlord of Rejecting Subtenant Applications in Hopes of Vacating Rent-Controlled Unit.

That's why you have a lease agreement, not month to month.

Mr. Mitchell- I'm with you. You own it- you decide who you can trust to meet their rent payment. It's not complicated. It's business. As more folks recognize that renting puts you at the mercy and discretion of a building owner in a rising real estate market, at some point you either have to change your housing situation to a homeowner OR move.

Well Mr. Blafard, All the emotional rants I now see are just you with your panties in a knot. Of course if you want to be saved by socialism it just goes to show what little initiative you have. Now if you are a struggling writer or some such thing is it up to a property owner to subsidize your rent? Apparently that is where you are!

Re: “East Bay Paratransit Bus System Leaves Drivers Broke and Riders Often Stranded

I worked in the Radiology dept some years ago. I observed, in horror, as the elderly and disabled waited, sometimes hours, after their CT and/or Ultrasounds scans. In many cases they hadn't had anything to eat or drink, because of the prep for the test. I would call paratransit on a regular basis to confirm patient pick up. It was a nightmare for me to get someone from paratransit on the phione.. A much bigger nightmare for those just trying to get home.

I think you all are missing the elephant in the room- the landlord days she wants YOUNG professionals. Age discrimination is illegal.

Re: “Young Professionals Only? Housemates Accuse Landlord of Rejecting Subtenant Applications in Hopes of Vacating Rent-Controlled Unit.

Mike Mitchell, your comments are abhorrent. The landlord is basing her decisions on what jobs people have, rather than the fact that they already have a job that covers the rent as it stands. This is illegal, but not to you apparently. Every comment you bleat on EBX reeks of right-wing, Ayn Randian buffoonery to the highest degree. You should consider yourself part of the problem, not the solution. Meritocracy, my ass. You must also believe in the American Dream and the just and fair Invisible Hand! All outdated and disproven concepts.

Mr. Blafard, so ignorant in your assumptions. What is written about property control coming from the activists is true and that's that!.

Re: “Court-Appointed Monitor Who Oversees Oakland Police Department Could Have Blocked Controversial Promotions — but He Didn’t.

A couple things occur to me;

1.) The young lady we refer to as Celeste Guape has been consistently referred to as a teen... Does this simply that she was 18 or 19? Or was she younger?

If the former, it seems that an attempt at emotional button pressing is being employed to make her seem both younger and to absolve her of any responsibility in the situation while inflaming an already intolerable situation within the OPD. If the later, then the situation is far worse. It then becomes, at a minimum, statutory rape.

EBX, the young ladies lawyer(s) and the system in general seem to be avoiding that designation.

Given the general tendency the reporter has demonstrated to inflammatory language in regards to this issue, I can only conclude the reason for anyone NOT calling this statutory rape or child sexual abuse is that she WAS in fact a young adult (over the age of consent) making disciplinary action FAR more difficult within a legal framework (always keeping in mind the core of the complaint against OPD is UNLAWFUL activity) than had she in fact been a minor (As has been consistently implied).

2.) Returning to the idea of UNLAWFUL activity as core to the complaint (or denial of contractual or legal rights) by part of ANY government agency (OPD, city council or those otherwise functionally a part of city, county, state or federal governance at ANY level); Surely this is NOT being advocated by the author... Nor inciting mob mentality... Is it?

There MAY well be legal issues (read as UNLAWFUL issues) with the "suggestions" presented... And I suspect that EBX is well aware of them and has chosen not to mention them in favor of incitement, especially given the possibilities of point one.

Re: “Young Professionals Only? Housemates Accuse Landlord of Rejecting Subtenant Applications in Hopes of Vacating Rent-Controlled Unit.

I just "love" all the references to "communism" and "Marxism" in these comments. Kevin Smith's four comments on EBX are anti-affordable housing. He either doesn't live in Oakland or he's a landlord. Mike Mitchell, another deranged right winger who hates the working class. Keep it in yer pants, boys. Your Ayn Randian vision of America is on the losing end of history.

Re: “Court-Appointed Monitor Who Oversees Oakland Police Department Could Have Blocked Controversial Promotions — but He Didn’t.

How do we contact Robert Warshaw to let him know that we want him to:

deny promotions, discipline and demote the two high-ranking officers who mishandled the departments internal investigation of the Celeste Guap sex-crimes scandal.

Re: “Why Private Security Patrols Are Not the Answer

I agree Claire they didn'thould have uniforms, the good guys don't hide. There are members of society who delve in believing they are the police. Not all of them are responsible, what if neighborhood watch individuals have - themselves recently just got out of prison? There does need to be transparency for these 'wanna be' street thug 'private security gangs'. Certain members of society who may have had fed. connections have tried to play God and I have seen there mk ultra stuff first hand (Snowden was a patriot). Bottom line here is with great power - comes great responability. Those who wear the uniform and are legit have my respect and be responsable. They have had professional training also. I personally think tasers should be an important tool. The ones who wear the badge dont have to hide as they are 'guardians' with pro weapons training to de escellate. The warrior vigilante types could have a hidden agenda and often times do-gangstalking and they do get paid.

Re: “Court-Appointed Monitor Who Oversees Oakland Police Department Could Have Blocked Controversial Promotions — but He Didn’t.

One might suppose that compiance director Warshaw would defer to the new Police Chief and her bosses, the Mayor and her City Administrator. This would imply that there is a well-thought-through plan for OPD reform.

Warshaw is simply out-of-touch, he doesn't know that city hall has no plan
at all for OPD reform.

We all know this, don't we? Or maybe we don't so we keep the same incompetents in city hall.

Re: “Court-Appointed Monitor Who Oversees Oakland Police Department Could Have Blocked Controversial Promotions — but He Didn’t.

I lost any faith in OPD's will to punish powerful alpha cops within OPD when (January 2016) Holmgren tried to discourage the victims of home invasion (by intoxicated cops) from pursuing a criminal complaint---and nothing happened to him. As long as such OPD officers are viewed by OPD brass, the Court and fellow officers as being the disciplinary third rail and politically untouchable there will be no accountability, bad acts will recur, there will be no cultural or practice reform and no full NSA compliance. The statute of limitations for discipline of anyone for actions and in-actions may have run, but there's no statute of limitations for overturning a promotion........

They have that property at the agreed price and as long as the prospective tenant has reasonable credit, a sufficient job and no criminal history they are absolutely entitled to be living there. It is discriminatory, I love how all these Trumpers cry "communism and Marxism when it comes to property and money even though according to their own "boy" Russia is our ally. Stupid. Hypocritical. Typical.

Re: “Trapped Part One: Cruel and Indefinite Punishment

My husband and I are friends with Demian and his wife, Hilda. They are both beautiful people. If you don't think serving 30+ years in prison for his crime of accessory, then you aren't paying attention. He's a mature man who's doing wonderful things with his life. I encourage each of you who have no idea who he is to write him, introduce yourself, and be open to the possibility that he deserves a second chance.
