Re: “Vast New Bay Area Bike-Share Program Is Everywhere ... Except Deep East Oakland

The people who design plan and programs to accelerate our ascent to Amsterdam are totally out of touch with the needs and desires of neighborhoods of color. They have no clue and actually dismiss the fact that not everybody in the world leads their lives by smart phones, laptops, Starbucks and Uber. They don't understand that when they have those obligatory "community meetings" in deep East Oakland, turnout may be sparse because some folks have 2 or 3 jobs and get up early because they work for low pay. Some folks have no child care options. Some folks are too busy just keeping the lights on and food on the table. Some folks lack adequate safe transportation. Spending 2 or 3 evening hours during the week at a meeting about a bicycle program is just not a life priority. In some neighborhoods, adults who use bikes fall into 2 main groups. Group one are the folks you see riding to low paying jobs in the early mornings every day. Group two are the guys who provide underground retail opportunities in the neighborhoods. In some places, hardly anyone rides bikes because they are seen as a pleasant recreational option. Some people don't have an extra $5 a day for a bike ride. If you want an effective program, you need to talk to the people and figure out what works for them. You can't force fee your pinhead utopian dreams into their daily reality.

Re: “Report: Berkeley Police Six-Times More Likely to Use Force Against Black People

Greenwood says: "My own sense, as a 30-year Berkeley cop, is that we dont have racial animus, Greenwood said at a public forum last night." Greenwood's 'own sense' is a white privileged sense. He is not really quaified to 'sense' the reality of racial profiling by BPD.

I also note that since he scored the gig as BPD Chief of Police, Greenwood appears to have packed on some pounds. Could it be the gig is stressing him out, leading to stress eating? It is my own sense that choosing him to be BPD chief was a poor, insider choice, that he was picked to be plain, white and boring. He's a placeholder whose job it is to defend the status quo without acknowleding the reality of how BPD cops treat persons of color.

And a 'module' in an 8 hour training is what, an hour? Two hours? The chief makes it clear that BPD cops are not getting the right training, including him.

Re: “Vast New Bay Area Bike-Share Program Is Everywhere ... Except Deep East Oakland

One problem comparing crime in different sections of the city is that we know only reported crime, and people in deep East Oakland may be less or more likely to report a crime. The company could do a public service by stationing bicycles in all parts of Oakland, then report all thefts and instances of vandalism.

Re: “Oakland Police Hold Secret Ceremony Honoring Several Officers Accused of Mishandling Celeste Guap Sex-Crimes Investigation

Here I gave Libby Schaff credit when she was first elected. I thought maybe she was the ticket since Jean Quan and the ones before failed miserably to run the city. Yes, this happen before Libby but while during LIbby. She really should be embarrassed and ashamed to be apart of a ceremony that should have been about demotion and conviction for untrustworthy officers. The new police chief is a yes person who grins and bear it. She is clueless and has the nerve to congratulate these monsters on what? They all should be ashamed of themselves as individuals and the representation of Oakland. Vote Libby Schaff out of office along with the new police chief. Fire all those officers involved in the Guap case. Demote them to civilian life and make them pay the consequences for the behavior and actions. Disgusting to say the least!!!!!

Re: “Vast New Bay Area Bike-Share Program Is Everywhere ... Except Deep East Oakland

There already seems to be a thriving bike share scheme in Oakland. People of means buy bicycles, people with lesser means steal the bicycles and share them among their brethren. It's very generous of Ford to fund an influx of new bicycles to the scheme, and perhaps this is their contribution to gentrification.

Re: “When Landlords Lie

I did not know about this article! I do want to say that all of you guys put up a great FIGHT! I tried to fight not to move out but it got to be to much for me and my children! The bond that the 3 units shared was awesome! The landlord never lived in the unit! A single mom and her 3 children did for 5 years.

Re: “Vast New Bay Area Bike-Share Program Is Everywhere ... Except Deep East Oakland

Every low income person I've ever met who relies on a bike for transportation has found a way to get their hands on an adequate bike. It can be done for very little money or barter.

Bikeshare is for a different use case, but that won't stop people politicizing everything when it fits their lazy, outdated narrative. People have to hustle. It won't kill them.

Re: “Vast New Bay Area Bike-Share Program Is Everywhere ... Except Deep East Oakland

I don't see why they can't start with two bike share stations at Eastmont Mall and Coliseum BART.

Adding just those two stations would be a tremendous help to people in the area who need to get around. Eastmont has an AC Transit hub, and an adjacent police station, so it's pretty safe and connects to other public transit.

Eastmont is less than two miles from the Coliseum station, and according to google, it's a nine minute bike ride on flat streets. I've ridden it myself, and its quite doable.

It's great that Motivate established a $5 (for the first year) bike share program for lower income folks. But if they don't add some stations in places that will actually benefit those in that category, that program starts to look like an illusion.

Re: “Top Commander Accused of Turning California National Guard Into ‘Criminal Syndicate’

I've been trying to bring attention to the unlawful general order of MG Haskins to deprive Medically Non Deployable (MND) Soldiers from performing IDT and AT. This authority rests with The Surgeon General, delegated to State Flight Surgeon, who considers the merits of each case.
In my case, I was "cleared" to participate, and was still prevented from doing so. This also led to false accusation of AWOL and FFO (can't be Failure to Follow Orders, if it's an "unlawful" order, and how can I be AWOL when I report to an armory and then am denied the ability to participate?), and I was demoted.
Further, how many other MND Soldiers are being similarly victimized, and deprived of the opportunity to possibly correct their physical maladies?
The office of Representative (D-CA 7th District) Ami Bera has so far refused to take any action or even respond to query. No one can be depended upon to do "the right thing" until there's enough public outcry, and the Soldiers this affects, already have physical problems, can't likely afford legal representation, and have representatives that ignore them.
I'm asking for help not only for myself, but for ALL the MND Soldiers who've been denied their rights and responsibilities by an unlawful and immoral order that's been in place for the last four years.

Re: “Vast New Bay Area Bike-Share Program Is Everywhere ... Except Deep East Oakland

OK let's get out idealistic heads out of the utopian clouds. I grew up in East Oakland... Ain't nobody paying $3.00 a trip for a bike ride or $10 for a day pass... I'm a bike rider an I can afford it and have all the technology needed to take advantage of this program and I wouldn't. Maybe NEW people to the Deep East... NOT the folks I know and know of. This may elicit a gasp from some of you. Some of you may spout some hotepness salt my way... but YOU KNOW I'm not lyin.

Re: “Oakland Police Hold Secret Ceremony Honoring Several Officers Accused of Mishandling Celeste Guap Sex-Crimes Investigation

Libby Schaaf hasn't the slightest idea of what political transparency is.
She thinks transparency has something to do with holding budget meetings and providing a way for citizens to report potholes and broken street lights.

You can read her 2018 campaign statement below.

Transparency is all about leaders having a clear vision and an accountable plan for moving towards that vision. That means, for example, actually reducing crime, actually reducing displacement and other social and economic problems. In order to reduce problems city leadership needs to
clearly and precisely state what the current problems are and set criteria
for regular performance review and modification of policies that aren't working. Monthly, quarterly, annually.

Transparency is not about inviting the public to budget PR meetings where priorities are obscure and underlying policies are not described. Final budget decisions are then made behind closed doors and only voted on in partial public view (by those members of the public who are not yet fed up with Council meeting confusion and inefficiency).

If Oakland's major problems were potholes and broken streetlights, having a means to report them still would not amount to anything like transparency.
Transparency would make clear why we have potholes and broken street lights, why we have not kept up with infrastructure maintenance and how we plan to keep up in the future. And how to change our strategy if we fail.

Libby "The Transparent:"

"I have always fought to make Oakland a more transparent and responsive city from holding community budget meetings across the city so that more Oaklanders have a say in how their tax dollars are spent to partnering with Code for America to make Oakland city government more transparent and user-friendly. I will continue to make it easier for residents to report problems like potholes and broken street lights and hold managers accountable for fixing them. I will continue to prioritize getting Oakland on sound financial footing."

Not the slightest notion of what she is talking about.

Re: “Vast New Bay Area Bike-Share Program Is Everywhere ... Except Deep East Oakland

"I'm for putting bike share stations all over Oakland."

Uh huh. The "sharing" economy is all about sharing.

Sorry pal. "Sharing" is simply the current form of discrimination.
Poorer folks will not benefit. Richer folks will.

> . If someone made a honest mistake or clerical error is much different from attempted concealment.

It's pretty clear that when police supervisors heard, from Guap, that possible sexual misconduct was being committed by OPD officers, instead of investigating this immediately they tried to ignore it as hard as possible. This is not an honest mistake or clerical error.

Re: “Oakland Police Hold Secret Ceremony Honoring Several Officers Accused of Mishandling Celeste Guap Sex-Crimes Investigation

Just because of the actions of a few doesnt make the whole bunch rotten. I know a few Oakland cops... good people. If someone made a honest mistake or clerical error is much different from attempted concealment. If the feds found no crime than why is the media? If they want a ceremony without media... who cares. Meanwhile lets talk about all the crime and shootings that arent cop related.

Re: “Vast New Bay Area Bike-Share Program Is Everywhere ... Except Deep East Oakland

I'm for putting bike share stations all over Oakland. If bikeshare stations had been placed in East Oakland, the east bay express would have written an article that the forces of gentrification are using bikes to colonize East Oakland.

Re: “Vast New Bay Area Bike-Share Program Is Everywhere ... Except Deep East Oakland

Anyone who has visited East Oakland knows that there are lots of adult bicycle riders there who depend on bicycles for basic transportation.

Unfortunately good old racist bias every step of the "community involvement" process overlooked the real needs of Oakland's most neglected neighborhood.

The whole rideshare notion is, it seems to me, designed to serve the privileged--people who have credit cards and computers and smart phones and a preference for bicycles painted in trendy pastels.

Onward and upward with the upper classes!
