Re: “Oakland Counseling Guru Accused of Sexual Assault

You want to know what you can do to "make things right," Steven? ROT IN JAIL, where you absolutely belong.

Re: “Oakland Counseling Guru Accused of Sexual Assault

Steven is related to my oldest friend, so I've encountered him several times over the decades I've known my friend. Rape/molestation survivors can sense a predator, which Steven is. I ALWAYS KNEW. I ALWAYS felt disgust toward this person. And sadly, I have been proven 100% right. I am sickened and disgusted beyond belief with this arrogant, selfish, delusional rapist. I'm nauseated with these accounts, knowing exactly exactly exactly what he looked like and sounded like when he was violating these women's boundaries and bodies. Because all rapists are the same. Steven, you are exactly the piece of shit my intuition always knew you were.

Re: “Oakland Counseling Guru Accused of Sexual Assault

This is so sad and maddening. I feel for all the women who were violated and feel righteous indignation..may charming creeps in positions of power be held accountable. He deserves life in prison.

Re: “Oakland Counseling Guru Accused of Sexual Assault

I met this man personally and went to his house. I am not all shocked although highly saddened by this news. Very rarely do I meet someone who oozes pure slime and I distrust immediately. He was obviously highly intelligent and manipulative. I can see why people found him appealing but he made my skin crawl. His room was littered with the remnants of a sex party and and copious drugs from the night before. I believe him to be a sociopath who prays on open minded people. Do not trust anything he says he will take your money and your dignity and then try and avoid any responsibility. He is very clever and a schemer. I doubt hell show his face again as his finally been called out and bravo to the brave women who did so. I hope someday he faces reprocussions for abusing the trust of so many women in such a sick way. An absolute cult leader and narcissist who makes my stomach turn.

Re: “Oakland Counseling Guru Accused of Sexual Assault

This was a cult. Not a "counseling school."

Re: “Where to Buy Legal Weed in the East Bay on Jan. 1

They should empty the prisons of all the Black men and boys found guilty of selling weed. Probably can't get a job at these shops though.

Re: “Plan to Ship Coal Through Oakland Was Years in the Making

Thank you for this article. This record appears to confirm a longtime plot to stick us with coal dust. Hard to understand, since Mr. Tagami's children live here too, albeit higher up the hill than do those most seriously affected.

Re: “Pending Eviction of Former Black Panther Aunti Frances Highlights Just-Cause 'Loophole'

Elizabeth, you may want to actually read and comprehend the article before trying to form a mob to harass a business where Morphy doesn't work anymore.

"As it turned out, that Tuesday was Natalia Morphys last day at Sweet Adeline."

EBX, really? Why is that kind of comment allowed?

Re: “Pending Eviction of Former Black Panther Aunti Frances Highlights Just-Cause 'Loophole'

There doesn't seem to be an easy solution to gentrification. Both tenants and landlords are between a rock and a hard place. The fast-paced rising cost of living in the Bay Area has left working class citizens unable to keep up. At the same time it's unfair to demand that a mom-and-pop landlord subsidize the cost of living for a tenant for the rest of their life. The only solution to this problem is to build high rises in places with high demand. The Bay Area needs to move away from single family homes and three story buildings just like New York. However, some NIMBY folk oppose this type of development.

Re: “Pending Eviction of Former Black Panther Aunti Frances Highlights Just-Cause 'Loophole'

Wouldn't it be interesting if my neighbors and I made a big stink of this in front of Sweet Adeline's every single day until/unless Morphy were convinced to do the right & moral & human thing?

Re: “Pending Eviction of Former Black Panther Aunti Frances Highlights Just-Cause 'Loophole'

Measure JJ didn't go far enough to amend Just Cause in 2016. Hopefully we can get a ballot measure together in 2018 to Close the Loopholes, most notably this one.

Morphy and her family are assailants in the current class war raging in our neighborhoods, primarily against low-income black and brown folks. While this case is high-profile, hundreds of others have been perpetrated silently in North Oakland. With the current tenants' rights framework, tenants are at an extreme disadvantage against landlords.

The heart of the matter is deeper than gentrification; one must look at the not-so-subtle racism in Oakland's ordinances, and the structures that allow for ongoing oppression and removal of poor folks from their homes and the communities that support them.

By utilizing the racist and classist tools available to them, Morphy and family become, in practice, racist and classist. Regardless of whether they succeed in these two unethical evictions, that should be their cross to bear in Oakland moving forward.

Re: “Highland Hospital Surveillance Stirs Concerns

This is an outrage. It deters people from getting help. Yes, there is crime in Oakland. So let them die?? We need to encourage people to seek help, not threaten them. Some cities have made polices that people reporting drug overdoses will not be questioned due to the fact that people were letting their friends die out of fear of obtaining medical help.
And by the way, the Bay Area is high crime.Highland is Oakland's general hospital. Yes black people live here. That does not make patients more dangerous or less worthy.

Re: “Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf Says: The Remedy is More Women in Power Now

To Kathleen Richards, who apparently requested this piece by Mayor Libby Schaaf:

Whatever the inspiration for this piece of writing, the writer remains, in my view, an exploiter of a current media trend rather than a contributor of insight to a discussion which can certainly benefit from thoughtful and incisive reflection.

As an example, Schaaf says that women need to occupy more powerful positions. I would suggest that a more useful perspective would be to say that women need to occupy more responsible positions and that characteristics of such responsibility be explored.

Thus I wrote that rather than merely appointing a woman as Oakland's Police Chief, our Police Department might work toward having more like 50% female officers. That could indeed introduce a new level of female responsibility, as well as power, which would benefit all Oaklanders by having cops who are less violently macho, more able to listen to community concerns and more compassionate while still being capable of enforcing the law.

In the case of Mayor Schaaf herself I would suggest that she has abundant power of all sorts in her office but she has largely failed to adequately shoulder the responsibilities that her office requires.

Re: “Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf Says: The Remedy is More Women in Power Now

To the poster, Hobart Johnson, who accuses the mayor of "jump[ing] upon the current media bandwagon regarding sexual exploitation of women": To be clear, I asked the mayor -- just as I asked all the other women whose essays appear in this week's paper -- to write about this issue. It was not her idea.

Re: “Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf Says: The Remedy is More Women in Power Now

What is deeply disgusting and upsetting about Schaafs opinion piece ought to be made perfectly clear.

Schaaf is referring for her own political purposes to a very important socioeconomic problem having to do with power differentials between men and women and between adults and children.

Its not just about women--its about sexual (and economic) exploitation of those in less powerful positions (children as well as women) being exploited by those in more powerful positions.

Schaafs work in elected political office has been at best mediocre and in the main has been less-than-competent. Thus she jumps upon the current media bandwagon regarding sexual exploitation of women. Nothing could be more cynical than this politicized PR effort.

I happen to agree with what Schaaf says about putting more women in positions of power. I am talking about real action, not posturing.

In one particular place, in Oakland, there could be enormous social benefit: greatly increasing the number of female cops. It is well-recognized in contemporary policing that qualified women are likely to make superior police officers. I do know about this from personal experience.

Have we seen a program from Schaaf for working towards 50% of Oakland cops being female? A female Police Chief is not at all the same thing.

Wonder why not? Its the difference between real understanding, real leadership and leadership and managerial incompetence and political exploitation.

I hate to have to put it this way, but, as a feminist myself, Schaaf simply makes me want to puke.

Re: “Berkeley Progressives Have a Chance to Prove They're Not NIMBYs

Let's be real. WE NEED HOUSING. Caring about design is nice and all and should be considered when we have extra housing stock (like in the case of Detroit which can choose to be more picky because they have too many homes). In the bay area we do not have this luxury. When we have houses jam packed with more people than should be allowed and, even worse, people living in the streets because the prices or rents are too high, for reasons of human decency, we need to hang up our want to have nice and pretty city blocks and build more to help people out.
