Re: “A T-Shirt Rises Out of East Oakland

Best, Minnie, Dime, And others are inspiring the next generation. Oakland got artists, muralists, activists and people hungry to see our communities thrive. Were coming for everything they said we could never have. #MexicanRootsOaklandRaised

Re: “Why Aren't There More Latinx Nights in Oakland?

I would really like more diversity in the sound. Salsa is fine, but how about incorporating Mexican and Central American sounds - you know - reflective of the music of the majority of Latinos who live in the bay area. Salsa nights always turn into a very Americanized performative sport anyways.

Re: “Broken Pipes, Broken System

Councilwoman Annie Campbell Washington says her only duty when constituents ask for help is to refer them to someone else--kick the can down the road, in other words. That's a lousy politician, I'd say.

Re: “Oakland Approves Tenant Relocation Assistance for Owner Move-Ins and Condo Conversions

Kalb should recognize rent control does not work- it does not add 1 unit of housing to the housing stock. Economists have debunked the theory that rent control has any broader positive impact on housing. Yes it does benefit certain lucky renters (poor or not), but harms mom and pop landlords disproportionately and harms cities housing stock overall, and raises rental prices. Means testing would have disallowed Mayor Ed Koch's rent control apt. I know people (one recently featured in Sunset magazine) who have second homes because they have a rent controlled unit- is that really who you mean to protect? Why do we means test anything?

Re: “Broken Pipes, Broken System

Oakland residence are subject to years of incompetent do nothing leadership, a sewage problem is likely the tip of the iceberg. Please hold them accountable, they shouldn't continue to operate above the law.

I wonder who the contractor has ties to at the city to get that type of work. Oakland being Oakland....

Although organization professes to assist victims of domestic violence, Alipato Project is actually representing an admitted abuser, Yousef Wally, who has repeatedly apologized for his violent behavior. Inexplicable.

Re: “Town Business: Regulating Tenant Move Out Agreements, and a New Library Parcel Tax Proposed

Alphie, I don't like parcel taxes either (for a different reason than you -- because they aren't proportional to property value), but if this were a sales tax proposal, someone else out there would be saying "I'd vote for this if only it were a property tax..."

My view is that if you support what the money will be used for, you should probably support the tax even if it isn't raised in exactly the way you prefer. (Not just you specifically, everyone.) Otherwise services starve while we wait for an impossible level of agreement. And I, for one, hella support our libraries.

Re: “Town Business: Regulating Tenant Move Out Agreements, and a New Library Parcel Tax Proposed

Measure Q
Library Parcel Tax Extension was passed and lasts until 2024 - OAKLAND WHAT ARE you doing with the money? I would say we have clearly taxation with VERY poor representation.

Re: “Town Business: Regulating Tenant Move Out Agreements, and a New Library Parcel Tax Proposed

So once again the city mismanages it's funds for these ineffective BS pet projects to their buddies and then states services like the library need additional funds. Oakland already has high property taxes and yet we STILL don't get basic reliable services from the city.

No more taxes!!

Re: “Town Business: Regulating Tenant Move Out Agreements, and a New Library Parcel Tax Proposed

I would not be in favor of a parcel tax because yet again the property owners in Oakland are being asked to subsidize the local services that are used by all residents. I would be in favor of a sales tax increase to support public libraries, that way all residents who do business in Oakland would contribute to the social services.

Re: “Old School, New Paradigm: An Exploration of Oakland Marijuana Rituals Past And Present

How you gonna forget about Harborside? Forget Richmond man, if I'm going to the hood, it's going to be Oakland and actually, I'm not going to the hood, I'm going to the nice part where I can chill by the water and blaze while staring out at the water and all of the boats docked there while local cops and sheriffs walk by on their way to Starbucks and Quiznos. Nice and safe, which is a little surprising given the bad rap Oakland gets (which is honestly pretty well deserved if you just cruise down East 14th, I mean E-one-fou' lol). Also, Ed Rosenthal is THE MAN. Everyone that's anyone knows the bible he wrote and it comes in CLUTCH anytime you run into an issue. But yeah man, how the times have changed. Good article. Keep it up.

Re: “Best Cannabis Dispensary

Real talk: Harborside is the best. Back when I lived in Cali, nothing compared. I hit up all the clubs and never found anything close to as legit as Harborside in Oakland. Huge selection, tons of security, high grade, low grade, mid grade, extracts, strains galore, and more edibles than I could ever eat. They literally have it all. And to top it off, their owners are awesome dudes. Super nice and super professional. I was literally standing in line one day while my back was acting up (back pains) and one of the owners, who is actually the dude with the ponytails you always see on TV, saw me, somehow noticed what was going on with me, and offered me a back massage. They are THE BEST. Much love for Harborside. I thought SR71 was going to be a lot better than they were, hardly a comparison to what HS has to offer. And when you're done, you can jet over to Quiznos on your way out. How cool is that? 5th and Embarcadero everyone, that's where it's at. Just watch out for the shady characters that chill across the street at that sketchy motel lol.
