Re: “Oakland Finally Builds Housing

Finally? Actually for over a year (and I suspect quite a bit longer, given how long ago the deserted building there was torn down) a development at West MacArthur and San Pablo Ave has been in progress.

The signage at the site claims it to be 177 units of 100% affordable housing.

How come that's never mentioned? Inconvenient for the narrative you want to present?

And EBX doesn't EVEN mention the arsonist that has singlehandedly managed to take down several hundred units that would have taken pressure off of affordable housing stock.

Re: “Frying Fish Under the Freeway

Matthew 14:18-19 says, Bring them here to me, he said. And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. "

Capitalism has failed all but the few. At this point federal and city governments won't do anything to help those in need, instead propagandizing that the poor are immoral and are therefore welcome to die on the streets. Every day Trump is doing what he can to create an even more unequal society (that started with Reagan, helped by Clinton, etc). The USA will soon be on par with the poorest, most corrupt nations on earth.

Re: “Oakland Counseling Guru Accused of Sexual Assault

Hats off to East Bay Express for pursuing and covering this story. It seems journalism is our last defense when consumer protections fail. As a licensed therapist I was appalled by the behavior of this organization's leader. I did a little research to find out how it is that he wasn't shut down sooner for practicing without a license. Part of the reason is that the Board of Behavioral Services or BBS only has jurisdiction over what they call "registrants." These are licensed or pre-licensed professionals with letters after their names such as LMFT, LCSW, & LPCC. (A separate agency oversees licensed psychologists, and per this article they did take action in regards to the alleged perpetrator's LinkedIn profile.) But the BBS oversees the vast majority of licenses in the mental health field in California. Because they have no jurisdiction over non-registrants (such as a coach or counselor) it is up to the Attorney General to to seek out some kind of prosecution for practicing without a license. I reached out to CAMFT , the statewide association of Marriage and Family Therapists, and they suggested increased pressure on the Attorney General to seek out these folks who are a danger to the consumer. Licensed clinicians can also write letters to the BBS to encourage that agency to also put pressure on the Attorney General. I'm going to do this and I hope others who read this will do it too.

Re: “Town Business: Oakland Seeks $65 Million for Affordable Housing and the City Council Debates Relocation Assistance for Tenants

People need to move out of Oakland to a more affordable location. The money should go to the people who is serious about relocation, and not just another road trip or temp relocation.

Re: “The Trouble with Kaiser's Technology

As a former Kaiser RN, I agree 100 percent with this article. I spoke up numerous times for safety and pointed out the obvious. My concern turned to pure panic at times for the patients. Bdalarms going off because confused patients wanted out of bed and nurse in pt rooms doing things like medications, discharges, admissions, toileting etc and the pts can fall leading to a centinal event. I think the state came in last January to Kaiser Santa Rosa due to falls and then understaffing. My last 2 weeks of pt assignments were so completely unsafe I was visibly upset. Yes I asked for help but as usual none was provided. I made an error, nothing life threatening and I reported it and later I was fired. They don't want nurses who speaks up and tell the truth to the patients. The managers managethe nurses and no nothing about the patients. They do rounds on the patients trying to try information out if the patients to use against the nurses. It was so bad I just wasn't myself anymore. I could go on and on, but bottom line is they are only about money and they are lieing to the community.

It's the right guy. It happened. It was rape. And people did complain about it before this came out.

Re: “Town Business: Oakland Seeks $65 Million for Affordable Housing and the City Council Debates Relocation Assistance for Tenants

This makes no sence. Moving is expensive especially for folks who just moved in. Why should they get less in relocation expences than someone who was living in a location for years.?

Re: “Tuesday’s Briefing: San Leandro Cop Charged With Statutory Rape; 333-Unit Housing Project in Downtown Oakland Gets Financial Boost

hello mr. ferrell, to answer your question, the original proposal for 416 small aparmtents, overwhelminingly studio and 1BR units, with some 2 BRs and just a few 3BRs. A community coalition group negotiated with the buyer because of a concern around gentrification, and agreed to purchase part of the site off them. The market rate group therefore got a lower risk 333 unit market rate development of small units, and a local nonprofit (EBALDC) will be building approximately 60 larger units (primarily 2 and 3 BR units). There was a fight, there were other community benefits that were agreed to by the market rate developer (including space for community uses in the ground floor commercial space, and contributions to Lincoln Park across the street which serves everyone in the neighborhood), and everyone is moving forward. If you have other questions that you're curious about, consider the seller who walked away with a cool $25M from the transaction after underutilizing the property for decades. Perhaps you might ask why the property was sold and developed earlier, or why they allowed school uses onto the site before checking if the structure and land were safe for kids to be around for 9 hours a day.

Re: “Oakland Counseling Guru Accused of Sexual Assault

Other commenters point out correctly that rate of false rape accusations are difficult to ascertain but generally estimated to be between 2 and 10 percent. Plenty of statistics linked here:

The quote from "a website" detailing how false rape accusations are "rampant" is from Riverside criminal defense lawyer Michael Scafiddi, available here:

Scafiddi's claims are difficult to verify, but seeing as the Innocence Project reports only 353 exonerations for DNA evidence since the first such case in 1989, it is difficult to see how he has reached this conclusion:

Finally, while the headline refers to Bearman as a "guru" you'll find no reference to spirituality in this article, and it refers only to the common usage definition as someone acting as a teacher in a particular area of expertise. In addition to the religious definition, Miriam-Webster defines "guru" as:

a : a teacher and especially intellectual guide in matters of fundamental concern has been a guru to many young writers
b : one who is an acknowledged leader or chief proponent became the guru of the movement
c : a person with knowledge or expertise : expert a computer guru

Re: “Oakland Counseling Guru Accused of Sexual Assault

In response to those who wrote after Grace, i found this on a website:

"False accusations run rampant in California sex crime cases. This is nowhere more obvious than by looking at the numerous innocent individuals whose false charges have been dismissed thanks to DNA evidence. Many of these individuals have been freed from prison after being wrongly convicted of rape based on false accusations and shoddy police work. It's my job to make sure that my client's unjust charges are dismissed from the start."

Beyound that, if someone gets invited to a sex party with drugs, they do not have to go. No one is holding them hostage and people can read up on LSD effects. No one can claim ignorance.

That we blame leaders for influencing us is part of the problem in this world, as is blaming the system and filing lawsuits that keep people afraid of taking risks to get close to others and mentor them or help them to recover from losses in their lives. More regulations against touching rob us all of the affection we need to thrive as human beings.

We do not need more regulations. We need more access to resources both externally and internally and more playfulness and openness to new experiences and empathy towards people who disagree with us.

What I also find interesting here is the article depicting Steve as a spiritual guru. Like many people he has his own way of making sense of the world and creating meaning, but Steve I know was not a person to spiritualize anything nor would he want anyone to follow blindly.

It is my own feeling that there something amiss with this whole thing. No doubt the hype of the #metoo campaign is interfering with objectivity and women want someone to pay for all their hurts even if it is the wrong guy.

Re: “Tenants Win Big Fraud Case Against Landlord

Unfortunately, in Texas, which is a Landlord State, is the worst for tenants. I live in San Antonio, aka, little Mexico....which is what landlords / scumlords, like, they can abuse the tenant with little or no recourse. I was illegally evicted for in good faith contacting HUD. Never late with my rent or any lease violations. I was discriminated, harassed, and retaliated against not only by management, but by HUD as well, who contacted the management before contacting me, which started the retaliation. I was physically assaulted as well. I was given 3 days to vacate which is a violation of HUD's lease and Texas Property Codes. The Courts didn't care and ruled in favor of the Plainitiffs, who apparently colluded with the Judges. Since the Plaintiffs had no case against me, they based their whole case on perjury....which I took to Gov. investigators to investigate and hopefully prosecute. HUD is just as much at fault for contacting the Respondents / Plaintiffs in advance of me, in addition to having only Hispanic Fair Housing investigators who voiced his distain for Anglos and a bias for the Respondents / Plaintiffs because they are Hispanic. I'm not able to find a tenant atty...they're for landlords. The few organizations for legal aid are so backed logged, it's impossible to get any help. If any attorney is reading this and knows of an Attorney in Texas that would be willing to help....please have them leave a post with name, phone #. There is money to be had: Appeal due to Fraud (Perjury); Landlord Harassment (approx. 11 incidences including the eviction and assault); Retaliatory Eviction; Motion for Sanctions; Elder Abuse. Thank you!!

Re: “Plan to Ship Coal Through Oakland Was Years in the Making

How are Phil Tagami, former Port of Oakland Commissioner, Jerry Bridges former Port of Oakland Executive Director, and Omar "strip club" Benjamin former Port of Oakland Executive Director all involved in raking in the money developing at the Port of Oakland? Did they set themselves up while in their positions at the Port? Maybe the City of Oakland can look into setting up some kind of time limit before former Commissioners and Exec. Directors and such can get involved in such developments at the Port. How about 15 years? May save them money in lawsuits in the future.

Re: “Why Derick Almena Deserves the Most Scorn

This article is spot on. I can't understand how some people see otherwise. This greedy manipulator narcissist was the antipathy of someone supportive of the art community. In fact this creep almost singlehandedly destroyed the work/live options for artists thruout the country with his arrogant disinterest in the safety and well being of his sub tenants and music performance attendants. I hope he does serious time when this is resolved.

Your full loyalty lies with the betrayer of your trust. Initially, I thought I was just feeling insecure when my husband would just be on his phone at odd hours, until I decided to take a chance to know, knowing is better than self doubts and it was exactly what happened when I employed the services of this particular group I came across by chance to help check his phone out intoto. Now I know when hes telling the truth and how to curtail him, I think it is not a drastic step if it'll make you feel better. My life got better, I stopped using my precious time to bother about his indiscretions and channelled my energy positively.
