Re: “New Oakland Law Fails to Protect Low-Income Residents

So the owner of the hotel can't sell it because people live there? Well, is it that entity's obligation to keep things status quo instead of exercising the right of ownership to do with the property as what is most economically viable? Get government and activists out of private property where it doesn't deal with zoning and usage. Have the City buy the property then if they want to continue having it adorn the streets as a flop house. Might as well.

Re: “Why Aren't There More Latinx Nights in Oakland?

Surprised there was no mention of Club 21 in Uptown Oakland. It's only one of the Largest Latinx Nightclubs in northern California with some of the biggest Latinx parties on Fridays and Saturday nights in the Bay Area usually over 400 people easy on a Friday or Saturday night. This Friday alone Amanda Miguel is performing live there. Club 21 and Club BNB have nights available for Latinx promoters looking to put on events as well.

Re: “New Oakland Law Fails to Protect Low-Income Residents

Our council members often pass feel-good legislation but don't follow through to make it effective. I can't speak to whether they intend these measures to work or just to look like they've accomplished something but in the end, it doesn't matter. Business as usual continues on.

Re: “New Oakland Law Fails to Protect Low-Income Residents

this totally sucks, you buy up buildings instead of doing repairs, etc. you sell it out from under people who need to have a roof our their heads. More tent cities anyone.

Shame on the dysfunctional, probably corrupt, Oakland governance. Rich people should not get to break the law and profit from doing so.

Re: “Why Aren't There More Latinx Nights in Oakland?

Yo - respect to all the people who commented above, whether or not you got mentioned in the article the community sees you and recognizes your contribution. It's probably important to remember that in a brief article like this it's not going to be possible to explore everything on the subject. Not to take away from your comments at all, just an observation.

Maybe that is an illustration that the Latinx scene isn't as unified as it could be, and this could be a starting point to communicate and collaborate more. I've been to a number of the nights mentioned above, but not all of them, and if we're really trying to all promote Latinx music and culture it's important to connect and build a community around it. When the actors in any given "scene" are supportive of each other's efforts it only works to strenthen that community.Nightlife and the Music world can be territorial and cutthroat, but if we can all recognize each other and help inform our respective networks of the vibrant events that each touch on different styles, cultures, and focuses I think there could be a huge change.

Re: “Fourth Ex-City Worker Alleges Oakland Auditor Abuse

Good the know that the City has a "Code of Conduct" for its employees. But who protects those who do business with the City against arbitrary and harmful behavior by those employees --often driving them out of business? Guess we won't be asking the Auditor to investigate....

Re: “Why Aren't There More Latinx Nights in Oakland?

I agree with some of the challenges this article mentions that exist for DJs and promoters but I wonder how much research was done sine the writer failed to mention several Latinx events that have been going strong for years in Oakland. Here is a list:
Fresquecito at Bissap Baobab with DJ WaltDigz
La Rumba Que Tumba with DJ Leydis at Brix
Sunday Funday at Caa with DJ Mayky
Salsa by the Lake - free event by Issac Koss
TUMBAO - Msica Cubana at Lukas Taproom & Lounge with DJ JuanLove every Thursday night. Ive been doin this event for 5 years now, 3 of which have been at Lukas.

Here in Concord, Vinnie's has designated Thursdays Salsa Night for l don't know how many years. We decided to drop in for a bit, and the dance floor was so crowded we could barely get in the door!

Re: “Real Estate Money Fills Campaign Coffers of Oakland Politicians

I wonder what happened from this. Now property prices are only growing. People with low salaries are increasingly harder to buy housing. When I had a need to buy my house, I did not have much money. But I was looking for cheap houses. I decided to buy not expensive and not very beautiful, and then gradually I will make it better. But I came to these sites https://www.zillow.com https://jacksonfuller.com
https://www.homes.com and helped me find a good house for a good price. I'm grateful to them.

I put on Sudada annually and other smaller BrujaLyfe events...but as a womyn Latinx curator I can say venues charge a ridiculous amount of money making it very difficult to throw monthly events.... wish you all also considered the work we are doing.

Re: “Wednesday’s Briefing: Judge Says Oakland Had a ‘Duty’ to Deal With Ghost Ship; Two Former UC Officials Interfered With State Audit

It did not take long for a Superior Court judge to determine that once they had knowledge, the City of Oakland had a legal duty to put the Ghost Ship property owner on notice of the life safety violations on the property. They should have at a minimum advised the parties that the residential occupancy was illegal. Mitigation measures should have included fines, immediate evictions and a compliance plan with target dates for completion. Instead, the City did nothing and people died. The question I have is why the District Attorney did not include the City of Oakland and the owner in the initial charging of the building manager. That is clearly negligence on the District Attorneys (Nancy O'malley) part and deserves EBX investigation.

There's also the Global Barrio party which has been going on almost every month at ERA for almost 2 years now, playing a lot of Latinx influenced sounds. But we at Global Barrio have faced the same challenges you have listed.

Re: “Fourth Ex-City Worker Alleges Oakland Auditor Abuse

It appears that Roberts is Oakland's version of Harvey Weinstein, or in this case is it Harriet Weinstein?

I find it interesting that city states that they took steps to address the bad behavior of Roberts. I wonder if that included a censure, loss of pay, or suspension from duty for a period of time. Probably not.

I believe the City Council should look into this since it appears that the City Administrator and the director of HR has failed the taxpayers as well as the current and former employees of the Auditor.

Re: “Fourth Ex-City Worker Alleges Oakland Auditor Abuse

Oakland tragically missed out on an opportunity to elect a thoughtful, competent and ethical Auditor when voters did not support Len Raphael in favor of Roberts.

I never cease to be amazed at how Oakland's supposedly progressive citizens keep electing the same sort of corrupt and incompetent pols to office.

Oakland is in profound need of leaders with the skills and integrity that are so noticeably missing in too much of what goes on in city hall.
