Re: “Gentrification Station: Why Oakland Still Says NO to Uber

Who the hell is Orson Aguilar and what office was he elected? Companies, corporations, and small businesses purchase real estate for their own reasons with the ultimate goal to earn a profit or create a return on investment. Zoning is the municipal process in which industries can distinguish where they are welcome and where they are a burden. Zoning is the process, not some community "activism" or whatever that nonsense is called. People are investing, with real money, into Oakland. That's a good thing. As they do, prices will likely rise as demand soars. If you can't afford it-leave or get a higher paying or second job. I fled the suburbs, Antioch, a few years ago, to move to Oakland. Love it. Orson- did you take Economics in high school or college? Nothing personal here, but the demands your group is making on a property owner are wrong.

The White House was meant for real warriors, not over-paid athletes.

Shouldn't a city of this size have enough talent and cross-checking in their accounting team not to make a rookie mistake like "whoops, that's a one-time expense"?

Re: “Oakland A's Minority Owners Purchase Downtown SRO After Previous Landlord Evicted Low-Income Tenants

Good article highlighting a problem in SRO housing units.
If the City passed a moratorium on SRO conversions until December 2018, then I assume the investor is betting on the longer term and won't attempt to convert before then?
Also I'm curious why the city only passed a moratorium for such a short time period? Seems like this is a textbook example why the moratorium is needed for a longer period.

Re: “Oakland City Council Fights Over How to Reduce Homicides, Violence

I find it ironic that Desley Brooks is opposing creating a new department to deal with a very troubling and persistent problem when she was so gung ho a couple years ago to create a new department of Race and Equity that so few people supported. I'm not even sure I support creating a new department. Just wanted to point out how the erratic behavior by our District 6 council person continues to affect the council and the city.

Re: “Town Business: Oakland Discovers Extra $7.13 Million Hidden in Police Department's Proposed Budget

"she projected a small deficit and relied on dipping into soda tax money as a balancing measure." Really I taught that money was supposed to go somewhere else not fill wasteful gaps created by the Mayor and City of Oakland. Once again tax payers have been duped.

"The Public Bank of Oakland that the City Council so far has refused to sign off on...

"Based on the performance of the public bank in North Dakota, Oakland's bank should be able to generate...additional funds for the City of Oakland and its people."

The public bank idea may be a good one. Not for a city like Oakland I'm afraid.

A state like North Dakota has legal standing and other resources that a city like Oakland does not possess. Oakland has had a well-documented history of financial irresponsibility. A local public bank might work in another California city. Here it could be nothing other than another disaster.

Re: “Town Business: Oakland Discovers Extra $7.13 Million Hidden in Police Department's Proposed Budget

Use of the word "Hidden" in the title, to imply that someone was trying to hide this. But - nobody was trying to hide this, and the error was found by the City of Oakland and disclosed to the public.

Another day at EBX, turning news into propaganda whenever possible.

Re: “Town Business: Oakland Discovers Extra $7.13 Million Hidden in Police Department's Proposed Budget

1.4% of that money could fund the feasibility study for the Public Bank of Oakland that the City Council so far has refused to sign off on.

Once the bank was fully operational, based on the performance of the public bank in North Dakota, Oakland's bank should be able to generate $20,000,000 - $60,000,000 A YEAR in additional funds for the City of Oakland and its people.

The $100K is a no-brainer. It's an investment in Oakland's future, and there are none with such a potential ROI for so little up-front.

Re: “Picán Restaurant in Uptown Oakland Closing ... For Now

I took a friend there for a special dinner last year, inspired by a CheckPlease review on KQED... some items were good, but a tough and smallish piece of "signature" fried chicken was a disappointment with overpriced side dishes required to make a meal.
The coup de grace was my friend's request for some sparkling water being met with a fancy, imported bottle of something brought to the table without comment. It later showed up on the bill as a $19 charge. Really?! Never went back. End of story. Have a nice "hiatus" Pican. And au revoir.

Re: “Oakland City Council Fights Over How to Reduce Homicides, Violence

Hmm. if we take the argument for the creation of a DVP at face value, does that mean that OPD are ineffective at violence prevention? If so, why would spending more $$ on police be an effective solution? Consider that Oakland just paid out almost $1m to settle the Celeste Guap case. That's money which could have been spent on things which could have reduced violence.

Re: “Oakland City Council Fights Over How to Reduce Homicides, Violence

Oakland has half the police, in ratio to population, that most major cities have. Oakland residents suffer two and three times more robberies, burglaries, and assaults than people in almost every other city in the U.S. The poverty rate for Oakland is average, and lower than the poverty rate in many safer cities. -- Three facts that all the councilmembers run away from.

Re: “Picán Restaurant in Uptown Oakland Closing ... For Now

Thanks for all the great food. Haters gonna hate, but I had great food, great drinks and great times there for years. Sure there were misses and a couple of bad service moments, but that's the industry. Thanks for making a great place for POC's and soulful White folks to get their grub on and socialize with style. You can always find a soul shack somewhere. Pican brought Black elegance and power to the center. The food wasn't cheap, but the cultural contribution was enoromous.
