Re: “Guerilla Cafe

Hard to find a better neighborhood place in Berkeley than this for brunch. Excellent coffee and breakfast.

Re: “Books Inc. Berkeley

My favorite Bay Area bookstore. I have found dozens of great books as a result of their staff recommendations and reviews. They have a very good magazine rack as well.

Re: “Standard & Strange

One of the top denim shops in the country carrying many of the finest artisan brands from Japan, Europe and the US. Of special note are Kapital, The Real McCoys, Ooe Yofukuean, Alden, 3Sixteen, Freenote and many others. Friendly staff and they now offer denim repairs. I just had two pairs of jeans tapered and hemmed with excellent results.

Re: “Nido

Nido is a real gem. Great Mexican food and cocktails, friendly staff, customers of all ages and backgrounds gives this an authentic Oakland neighborhood feel. My favorites are the Huarache or the Carne Asada for brunch with a classic Margarita. Mescal lovers will enjoy their range of quality spirits.

Re: “Itani Ramen

Not quite two years old and excellent when it launched, Itani Ramen keep getting better and better. Changing dinner to table service added a nice touch of comfort and relaxation. The liquor license and tasty highballs provide another touch. Finally, the finished and really attractive back room is a great spot for a private party. More items on the menu, etc.

Re: “ISSUES

The best source I've found anywhere in the East Bay for specialty magazines including fashion, home decor, travel, music, etc. , including many European and foreign language publications.

Re: “Prime Smoked Meats

Hello,
I just learned of your closure this morning! OMG! This is devastating news. We always buy your smoked boneless ham every Christmas. This year my Aunt who has cancer cannot come here so I wanted to surprise her/her family and mail the ham to them in Wisconsin. Can you tell me where I can purchase a Ham that is VERY similar to yours? I am just sick that you are gone! Please advise and Merry Christmas to you all. Thanks, Sue Cannon. Tel: 707-528-1110. Re: “Belly

My wife and I were thrown out of this restaurant by the well-known racist owner, Alice Woo. It's unfortunate because the burger with pickled cucumbers were good but the owner said she felt threatened by our black presence, refunded our money, and asked us to leave. This is no joke (I have the video). Apparently she is known for her racist behavior but we were not aware until after our horrible experience there. We are working with groups now to expose Belly and I hope whoever reads this actually witnesses how she treats black customers. I'm concerned she's going to threaten or throw out the wrong person and get this business, or herself, in very serious trouble.

Re: “Skywest Restaurant

This is one of my go to places since I moved nearby. BUT...Customer service is sometimes lacking.

Sunday around 1pm, it took awhile for the woman server to bring silverware, etc., to our table. My friends arrived and we made our order. We were the only guests seated at the tables and ordering food.

40 minutes later, our meals finally come out. My omelette was incorrect, not what I ordered. Friend's bbq double burger had no bbq sauce on it. We had to keep waving her down for everything we needed. MAINLY: our server said nothing friendly or welcoming to us at each occasion she came to our table. She was straight-faced, no smile. Yawning behind counter. We were the only ones seated and eating a meal.

This is not unusual here. So just come when you're not rushed, be prepared to 'wave' down the server. The tasty meals, freshly prepared and presented, and view of the golf course greens make it worth it.

my favorite quiet little place for breakfast with a friend or two. Everything done to perfection. Try a little harissa with egg dishes.

Re: “KPFA

When African Americans migrated from the South seeking relief from Jim Crow and better opportunities, they carried The Blues with them. A vibrant culture was established in West Oakland, California, that's steeped in the traditions of Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, and Louisiana. EVOLUTIONARY BLUESWest Oaklands Music Legacy, directed by filmmaker Cheryl Fabio features Isabel Wilkerson, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, and author - as well as iconic musicians of then and now. The film is showing Wednesday, September 27th at 7 pm, Grand Lake Theatre, 3200 Grand Avenue, Oakland. While the 7 pm screening has SOLD OUT, the theatre just added a second show at 10:00 pm also on 9/27, tickets $12 at the door.

Re: “The Artists Loft

LOVE The Artists Loft! Fun and funky space. Friendly and personable staff. The gallery is very nice and centrally located in downtown Oakland near the courthouse. Very close to freeways. Opening nights draw a large crowd. Staff and artists are talkative, respectful, and very cool.

Re: “57th Street Gallery

I think this club closed down in early 2016. Haven't seen any activity in almost 2 years. Owner Floyd Pellom changed personal phone number for first time in more than 12 years and moved. He may have had another skirmish with the law.
