Re: “Don't Call Me Pookie: Trevor Straub Quits Garage Rock

Thanks for standing up for the TQ of LGBTQ! Too often trans and queer ppl are forgotten, and ignored or worse yet intentionally slighted.

Re: “Popular Uptown Oakland Jazz Venue The Sound Room to Relocate and Expand

Regarding the plight of the owners of the Sound Room who must vacate their current venue and relocate due to upcoming development plans for their location, the Sound Room is a GREAT venue for jazz artists. My friends and I go there often because the atmosphere is so welcoming, the owners are so hard-working and sincere, we love to hear the artists who play there, and it is affordable for people with limited incomes. As we all know, performing artists and performance venues often suffer from a "Cinderella Syndrome" and are treated like less-than-necessary items when it comes to attracting funding, promotion and development. Art in any form is an expression of love by the artist. Compensation, if and when it comes, is a welcome but secondary factor. Most are underpaid or starving. Too bad performing artists and their venues cannot attract the frenzy of money and support from donors that materializes at the barest mention of competitive sports and monster-sized arenas, which always seem to run on pure greed all the way around. The heart of artistic entertainment more often than not, comes to us free or grossly under compensated. I sincerely hope the owners of the Sound Room, who have made a huge financial and personal sacrifice to pursue this venture, will find a fairy godmother to help them achieve their goal of showcasing and helping local jazz artists---Marilyn Kosinski, Music Coordinator & Concert Producer, St. Paul's Towers, Oakland.

Re: “Oakland’s New Budget — What’s in it for the Arts?

The activists are never happy because they can never get enough and would rather complain than take it upon themselves to help in truly the right way which is assist others in being more self reliant not subsidies. So tired of it all and the division they stoke via their mantra on social justice versus personal responsibility.

Re: “Oakland’s New Budget — What’s in it for the Arts?

It is true that the Kaplan/Brooks budget did cut police officers and did not fully fund the fire inspectors requested by the mayor, and claimed to expand arts grants, but it wasn't a balanced budget and could not legally pass. This article glosses over a very complex subject to provide only one, narrow point of view laden with misinformation - which seems to be the EBX MO these days.

Re: “On Garage Rock's Masked Conservatism and Regressive Politics

What a bunch of authoritarian nonsense, the left once an antidote to right wing religion and jingoistic Americanism, now the province of people who have the thinking skill set and personal agency of a Jerry Falwell follower.

This is AM radio and FOX news "war on Christmas" stupid

Re: “On Garage Rock's Masked Conservatism and Regressive Politics

'Garage rock' is conservative insofar as its adherents and practitioners reject most post-70's advances in technology and changes in popular culture. It is no more inherently 'politically conservative' than any other style of music. John Lydon likes Donald Trump; Mo Tucker is a Tea Partier; Johnny Ramone was a rock-ribbed Republican, yet we would not and should not condemn punk rock or the New York experimental music scene of the late 1960s because people with 'regressive politics' were 'allowed' to participate.

Re: “Mills College’s Plan to Ax Jazz Legend Roscoe Mitchell Draws International Outrage

The extent to which this is bullshit by default puts everything legitimate about Mills into deep questioning. Roscoe Mitchell is everything that the Darius Milhaud Professorship is FOR. Jesus.
