Re: “Vote Kalb or Wicks for Assembly District 15

Regardless of endorsements everyone should vote for the candidate of THEIR choice. Those who favor a particular candidate should cast their vote accordingly. No need to complain about or berate individuals or organizations that choose to support and/or endorse a candidate that is not your choice. Just vote for your pick and when the ballots are counted the issue will be settled. In the event that the outcome is not what you wanted, there is always the next election cycle to try again.

Re: “Vote Kalb or Wicks for Assembly District 15

Dan Kalb did NOTHING when I filed an Oakland police department complaint. Not one bit of advice from his office! In the end, my complaint was a total waste of my time.He also left my neighbors and me out to dry when CalTrans repaired 25% of our street. Kalb did NOTHING to help get Oakland to repave the other 75%. The Express got it right: he'd rather write policy than help constituents.

Re: “Vote Kalb or Wicks for Assembly District 15

Really? Buffy? I don't care if she grew up in a trailer park in California. She is a long way from that now. What are her views on prison reform (including the school to prison pipeline, excessive bail and fees, the tearing apart of families, the inhumane treatment of souls as if they were throw away garbage)? What are her views on charter schools that are sucking the life-blood from our already impoverished public education? The desperation of black and brown people targeted by the police? (Of course the police are "frightened" for their lives. They've been given a gun and a badge and told it is a jungle out there.) The gentrification of the East Bay wiping out communities of people of color and working class people who have been here for generations? Dense housing near transit hubs (a minority of which will be "affordable," whatever that means) will not solve homelessness nor working people being priced out of the places they are already living in. Richmond has a candidate in Jovanka Beckles. She's not perfect but she is ready to serve the interests of our community.

Just exactly who's on the "Editorial Board" these days? Robert Gammon, back again, never met a developer or a developer's shill he didn't like. Who else is there?

Re: “Vote Kalb or Wicks for Assembly District 15

Jovanka Beckles would be a disaster. She's way too immature and not self-controlled enough to represent anyone. She is TOTALLY funded by the RPA. Corporate funding? Yeah if you consider the highly organized RPA. Free rent by the SEIU! A sweet deal for them and Jovanka is #1 behind it. The Richmond Progressive Alliance is the "new Chevron". Jovanka publicly states things like: "All landlords are evil". Etc. Because of the RPA's most stringent rent control, values will decrease in Richmond and single family homes will disappear. Thanks Jovanka. We can't wait until you and Gayle are out of the council. Hopefully for good. Maybe then you will stop hating landlords.

Re: “Vote Kalb or Wicks for Assembly District 15

With all due respect, Dr. Phinney, the idea is for the candidate to represent local voters and communities, not the assorted nobility of the Democratic Party. When I think of local "grass roots" Gavin Newsom doesn't come to mind .

Re: “Vote Kalb or Wicks for Assembly District 15

A California mainly needing more ideas is a fantasy. In the real world, California's officeholders mainly lack the courage and voter-mobilizing ability to protect policy ideas from corruption by big donors' carrots and sticks, before, during and after their time in office.

In this real world, over many years when big donors' dominance of politics has deepened throughout the state, nation and world, a very rare counter-example has been Richmond's voters mobilizing to push back against Chevron's longtime abuse of its employees and neighbors. Jovanka Beckles' track record as a leader of that mobilization and pushback gives East Bay voters a rare opportunity to support that model and extend the power of its example to the state and nation.

Re: “Vote Kalb or Wicks for Assembly District 15

Richmond mayor Tom Butts endorsed Buffy! That says it -- money, especially Chevron.

Have you seen that movie "Nat Bates for Mayor" where he described his pro-Chevron followers as "hardly fools"?

Re: “Vote Kalb or Wicks for Assembly District 15

I'm surprised by the attacks on Buffy Wicks, who grew up in a trailer in California. Her grass roots organizing for Howard Dean and Barack Obama clearly show her ability to reach out to everyday people to represent them. I love her work on Obamacare and knowledge of what it takes to bring medical insurance to as many as possible. Wikipedia and other online sources reflect her scholarship, work for women and families and more. And, while you are reflecting upon her qualification and the above comments, please look at her endorsements from some of the most progressive leaders in our nation, state and local government, who are hardly fools.

Here are some of Buffy Wicks' endorsements:

Elected Officials
U.S. Senator Kamala Harris

CA Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom

Howard Dean,
Former Governor, 2004 Presidential Candidate, and Former Chair of the Democratic National Committee

Congressman Ro Khanna

Assemblymember Bill Quirk

State Senator Scott Wiener

Assemblymember David Chiu

Assemblymember Jose Medina

Hercules Mayor Myrna de Vera

Richmond Mayor Tom Butt

Irma Anderson, former Mayor of Richmond

Re: “Vote Kalb or Wicks for Assembly District 15

I agree with everything you say about Councilmember Kalb, and also endorse him. And if Prop. 13 reform is going to go anywhere, I believe we need someone with Kalb's hard-working determination and skill-set on the team.

But Buffy Wicks? I'm sure she's capable and sincere, however, your endorsement comes down to two things: 1) She "expressed the strongest support for SB827"; I don't think it matters that you think she supports it more than the other candidates, many or most of whom, as I understand it, support it. Many other candidates have experience as legislators which will be needed to keep making progressive improvements to SB827 and to future housing policy. 2) You find her personable (yawn) and she worked for the Obama campaigns and Administration; in other words, no experience as a legislator, the very job she is applying for. Many other candidates are progressive legislators with experience. It seems like all your 'honorable mentions' would be better options, even just based on your own listed comments. I hope voters will take a look at the other candidates more closely; in particular Jovanka Beckles, and the movement around her, should be more thoroughly considered than you seem to have done.

Re: “Vote Kalb or Wicks for Assembly District 15

This is another reminder that editorial pages directly represent the interests of the 1%be they liberal or conservative on social issues. East Bay Express is a private company owned and controlled by wealthy private interests. Its current Editor-in-Chief, Kathleen Richards, previously worked for a real estate company before being installed by its new owners. It's no surprise that these interests want to keep candidates out of office who fights for tenants and would threaten the massive profits of California's most powerful corporate lobby.

Don't just get mad, come out and knock doors for Jovanka! Put her sign in your window! Give $15 to her campaign! People power is the only way we can beat the wealthy corporate interests and elect candidates that reflect and represent the working class in the East Bay.

Re: “Vote Kalb or Wicks for Assembly District 15

Your swooning endorsement of Buffy Wicks, with her connections to the neo-liberal Democrats who landed the country in this mess, and your summary dismissal of Jovanka Beckles, the progressive with punch, in the race, suggest strongly, to me, that the agents of Putin have done it again. There's no "alternative" to the East Bay Express endorsements. It must be those darn Russians, again! Alert Washington!!

Re: “Vote Kalb or Wicks for Assembly District 15

I support Dan Kalb for this seat. If this were IRV, Jovanka would get my number two. But as California is finally beginning to realize some of the deleterious effects of charter schools, Buffy would not be on my ballot. Here's my reasoning - https://draketalkoakland.com/2018/03/14/my…

Re: “Vote Kalb or Wicks for Assembly District 15

Im hoping the EB Express is not a major source for people actually looking for direction in how to vote. Your recommendations are formulaic at best. Which we dont need in our district or in California. Consider Jovanka Beckles experience. I mean really consider the last 8 years in Richmond. Jovanka actually listens to her constituents so having a boatload of ideas for solving Californias problems that work well in print but dont represent the people of her district is not the answer. And I am certain shed do a much better job than your stated choices. Corporations like Chevron know how powerful a woman who listens can be. You should know that too.

If EB Express is to be a relevant resource, youll need to do better.

Re: “Vote Kalb or Wicks for Assembly District 15

So the measure of being pro-housing is support for SB 827? Its funny how EBX overlooks the influx of corporate and establishment dem money that Wicks has easily accessed. The decision to skirt Beckles' record and fight in Richmond, CA all the while overcoming clear battles and bias as an LGBT woman of color is ridiculous. But of somehow this well documented leadership is intangible and not applicable in Sacramento. Plus why shouldn't our Assemblymember come from the area of our district [Richmond] with some of the most compelling needs and underrepresented voices. On all levels this editorial and its silence makes clear why we must support Jovanka Beckles.

Re: “Vote Kalb or Wicks for Assembly District 15

I guess editorial malpractice is like obscenity: I cant define it, but I know it when I see it.
Like many of the others commenting, I am a Jovanka Beckles volunteer and supporter. I am not going to respond to the vague and flimsy notion that Jovanka Beckles has no new ideas to contribute. I would take her one powerful and known idea for 10 new ideas any day of the week: NO CORRUPTING CORPORATE DONATIONS! Jovanka will be beholden to the people who elect her, NOT corporations, or other moneyed interests. Delaine Easton, while not resonating in the polls had something very profound to say: Budgets are a statement of values. Well, campaign contributions are a statement of who you are and who owns your attention.
Up to this point, this race, while crowded, has been a relatively civil affair. Many of the candidates have served their communities honorably in elected office and deserve the right to make their case for higher office. This brings us to one of the two candidates endorsed by the East Bay Express, Ms. Buffy Wicks. Ms. Wicks certainly seemed capable of mesmerizing the editorial board staff based upon her resume and political accomplishments. Unfortunately, if you are going to accept accolades, you need acknowledge the failures: you were part of political operation that managed to lose almost 1000 legislative seats over the last 10 years and created the conditions necessary to push this country towards the precipice of fascism. A bit harsh to pin that on one individual, it was more of a Democratic party group effort of neglect.
A bit closer to home, the voters of the 15th Assembly district have the opportunity to see, who exactly has contributed the over $500,000 in campaign donations through 12/31/17. The link to the Secretary of States web site is very illuminating. http://powersearch.sos.ca.gov/quick-search… You might want to focus on the contributions made by David Crane and his group, Govern for California. They are notorious charter school promoters with anti-union proclivities. If you do take the time to peruse this information, youll also find that over $200,000 of Ms. Wicks donations came from out of the state of California.
Finally, I am simply gobsmacked as to why Ms. Wicks thought this would be the district where she could plant her flag. Bernie Sanders carried Barbara Lees 13th congressional district which largely overlaps AD-15. This district is known for being one of the most liberal in the entire state if not the country. Do you really think that a Democratic party Establishment candidate would play well here? What were you thinking?
Its not your heart...or intentions or beliefs I question, Ms. Wicks...its your judgement.

Re: “Vote Kalb or Wicks for Assembly District 15

I hope that the East Bay Express editorial team is paying attention to the fact that all but one of the comments on this thread speak passionately in favor of Jovanka Beckles based on her long record as a council-person with integrity who really cares about all people, including those who are most often ignored by people in power because they don't have the resources to "pay to play."

Simply talking to the candidates is not a sufficient way to arrive at endorsements. As Shoji says in his comment, everyone running for office in this district is good at parroting the progressive buzz-words. It is essential to actually look at candidates' records, at what their constituents have to say about them, and at who they are taking money from.

I was an Oakland resident for 10 years and have been a Richmond resident for 3. In terms of city politics, it was a breath of fresh air to move to Richmond and experience what is actually possible through the electoral process here. It transformed my attitude of cynicism that I'd developed towards the process in Oakland, where it seemed the main recourse for progressives to be paid any attention often required shutting meetings down. Here in Richmond, because grassroots movements managed to elect truly progressive people like Jovanka Beckles, who refuse to take corporate donations and who have proven that really serving their communities is more important than advancing their political careers, those working towards greater dignity and social justice for marginalized people encounter some people on the council who actually listen and carefully weigh all sides of issues.

If you want to elect someone who has progressive values (and by "progressive" I really just mean someone who believes in basic things like equity, justice, humanity, and dignity for all) and the integrity to actually consistently fight to put those values into action on the ground, regardless of the external pressures of power players (whether in the form of corporations or of big-monied mainstream party members), then you want to vote for Jovanka Beckles. You don't have to take my word for it or even the words of her many supporters -- her record speaks for itself.

Re: “Vote Kalb or Wicks for Assembly District 15

Yes, Kalb worked on legislation for Oakland's Ethics Commission and Police Commission. Please name a single accomplishment of either Commission.

Yes, being pro-housing is heading in the right direction. However, it's at least a decade too late to do anything useful about the current lack of housing. Not to mention that increasing housing density near transit nodes is useful only when there is sufficient transit capacity to accomodate the density. Our "transit" systems, BART, AC, etc. are utterly insufficient to accomodate more travel.

A candidate who actually knows about land use planning and coordinating it with transportation infrastructure would be a useful candidate. EBX has not identified such a candidate.
