Kronnenburger destroyed the most beautiful mural on Piedmont Ave., and now they have left a shell. Thanks, guys. Expensive food, marginal staff, and tiny burgers along with the loss of a community icon, the mural. Pfft.

Please,

The menu prices for artisan hand made soba are more than fair. Not everyone in Oakland wants this, and there are myriad establishments for any number of cuisines dotted throughout the city that are entirely affordable.

The level of craft combined with the aesthetics of the space warrant fair market renumeration to the creators. It is absolute BS that every restaurant has to be geared for all seasons and pocket books.

For some this will be a special occasion locale and for others something other. This is why Oakland is so magical, there is room for the expression of the arts, and in this case the art of food. It doesn't have to, nor should it be cheap or free.

By the way, I am one of those for whom it will be special occasions, and I am good with that, and will savor the privilege of partaking in what refinement of the art of soba these folks are manifesting.

Politically correct is getting off the charts and getting on my nerves.

I loved FuseBox, and while it certainly wasn't JackInTheBox price wise, you could put together a tasty meal that left you satisfied without breaking the bank. I thought the review above was honest, thoughtful, and dealt with all the aspects involved, including how much work and thought goes into the noodles. However, after spending over $100 for three for lunch, I left appreciating the subtlety and goodness of the dishes, and was glad I experienced it, but all three of us decided it was not worth the wait and the cost, especially with so many other amazing choices in the East Bay alone. We won't be back.

It was documented circa 1990 that there were some 40,000 soba shops in Japan. Even that number probably didn't include every little mom & pop soba shop or ekisoba place (fast, inexpensive soba stands in or near train stations). To keep prices low, most of these places use fresh but machine-made noodles. Serving only teuchi (handmade) soba at the Bay Area's first and only real soba restaurant is admirable but also questionable. I think the introduction of soba cuisine in the U.S. would benefit by affordability. Labor-intensive handmade (and house-milled) noodles could come along later, or perhaps alongside the more affordable option.

Come on, the long time locals of West Oakland didn't eat at fuse box either, no matter what the price point was. Fuse box was just as gentrifying as Soba Ichi is.

To me, the biggest difference at Henry's is that they don't have a wood or charcoal grill. That affects not just the burgers but lots of other dishes as well.

Nevertheless it's some of the best food in the East Bay.

Good review, makes me want to try this place.
One quibble: At a time when use of the N word can have serious career consequences, why are we continuing to use the term "kaffir lime" for [ital]Citrus hystrix? One doesn't have to be from South Africa to know that the K word is a highly offensive term used there by white people to demean black people. While there is some debate over the derivation of the name of the fruit (the most benign argument being that both this name and the racial epithet come from an Arabic root meaning non-Muslims or "infidels,"), it remains a highly charged term for many people. Fortunately, there is an increasingly common alternative name from its Thai homeland, "makrut." Just as the Spanish word cilantro is now the near-universal term for fresh coriander, and the Italian arugula has displaced rocket and roquette in nearly every cuisine, American diners can get used to the Thai name in any culinary context.
