Re: “Oakland Symphony Is in a State of Transition

Mieko is like a breath of fresh air. She is really good at what she does, especially fund raising, and she is bringing in star power, like Emanuel Ax, that will really put us, and Oakland, on the map. She is a pleasure to work with (for both staff and the Board), and she is bringing on the right people to help her. Staff turnover is always part of the process of transition to new leadership, and usually people leave for personal reasons. Submitted by a member of the Board, who did not leave.

Re: “Oakland Symphony Is in a State of Transition

Morgan and Hatano are on the wrong track here and the staff seems to see through it. Let's see, which is serving Oakland better?

A. Audience of 10,000+ (five concerts, 2000 different people each concert)
or
B. Audience of 1,500 (they come five times a year).

A. Programming that speaks to a larger audience and attracts new people
or
B. Programming that speaks to a small, aging audience

Morgan's comments just reveal that the people without the "business knowledge" are the current leaders. Any business person can tell you that in the long run, a larger audience is going to generate more money and support.

Remembering the antipathy, I re-read some of Gina's columns. I know why I held on to them ..

Re: “The Changing Sound of the Chapel of the Chimes

If it was a success 6-times a year why cancel it because the "same people" supported it? Why not build on success rather than starting something new and untried? It seems new management wants their own stamp on things and out with the old.

Re: “The Changing Sound of the Chapel of the Chimes

very disappointing. there are so few good jazz venues. instead of limiting the jazz, why not program more often? 12 times a year. 24 times a year. then you could mix it up. this feels really short sighted. I do like the idea of the money going to local non-profits. again, another reason to do it 24 times a year.

Re: “The Oakland Symphony Debuts a Classical Tribute to Ghost Ship

This was a fabulous piece of music, both emotionally moving and intellectually thrilling. I'd like to buy a recording or file of it whenever Richard Marriott is ready to release it.

Re: “Oakland's Wormhole Wednesday Is Ending

Without WW I might not have become Christian again heh. I know this comment will annoy some ("winners" perhaps). Yet it's true-- G-d works in mysterious ways indeed. ;D Thanks for the good times and trying alike. Mistakes are only regrets should we choose not to learn from them. And popularity? a fool's errand... May the music blare on! RIP Wormville

Wormhole Wednesdays will always hold a special place in my heart, and was a gateway for me in so many ways to practically countless treasured relationships and experiences.

Wormhole has built so much community in it's 6 years. I can't even do it justice in this comment. #epic #youwillbemissed

She is the real deal.

She also refused to cross a picket line at the Oakland Marriott.

Re: “The Fresh Punk of SWMRS

We live in sad times when "punk" bands sing lyrics like, "Miley [Cyrus], you're a punk rock queen" without a hint of irony.
