Re: “Should Oakland Schools Finally Try to Integrate?

Everything is always about race. As a Black male living in Oakland, who's grandmother came here in the early 1900's as a child, went to INTEGRATED schools, as did my mother, myself and siblings. it's sad we can't get past race issues!!! There were so few Blacks in the Bay Area & Oakland that was the norm for all of us.

1) Oakland Schools have ALWAYS been integrated for the most part. Only becoming segregated because of a families financial status in their ability to own a home in a particular area. 2) The root cause IMO of students failing is not about the schools they attend because of past redlining it's more about YOUNG parents. No father in the home, poor education themselves, a KDIA (old radio station) mentality. Their motto was LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL!!!

Yes, poor families care about their children's education, yet on a daily basis they allow far too much freedom in what their children do. They are the PROBLEM, not the students , nor teachers, nor schools. My parents would ask, Paul have you done your homework ... I would reply YES!!! I hadn't!!!
Today's youth, the majority have access to a computer via their cell phones!!
They can easily search to find answers, learn about history via video's, define words, solve complex math problems if they choose to do so while on the Internet.

Saying redlining from the 1930's is the problem is CRAZY!!! My grandmother bought her home in the 1940's for under $10,000 at 1045 53rd ST. in N.Oakland. It recently sold for $978,000!!!! Lay that old redline map over Oakland and you'll all those homes are in the money!!! The E.O. home we lived in over $300k, the home on Santa Ray over $1 million!!! All any minority owner had to do was buy & never sell. Would today's minority students be any smarter? I don't think so.

Stop the whining about being poor, discriminated against, segregated schools etc. All we need to do is look at the many Asians that came here like from Vietnam. No English skills, America and our ways totally foreign to them yet Asians now dominate major Higher education entrances. Why is that? Oh ... they are focused, not on Beyonce, Jazee, etc!! Let's work with the tools we have to help kids succeed in this highly technical world. They already have the tool ... a cell phone. Now teach them how to really make it work for them!!!

Re: “Should Oakland Schools Finally Try to Integrate?

It would be helpful if you gave us some of the political background behind OUSD segregation. Many of the participants in the decisions not to integrate via busing and/or redistricting are still alive but elderly.

My impression, and it's only that because the participants I've contacted did not want to comment, is that decades ago there was a deal struck between mostly white hills community leaders and flatlands African-American community leaders in which flatland schools were supposed to get a bigger share of OUSD resources in return for accepting segregation. At the time integration was not seen as a positive by Black Power advocates and certainly not wanted by many white hills residents.

If that's the background, it turned out to be a very bad deal for poor kids of color.

Re: “Should Oakland Schools Finally Try to Integrate?

As recent studies have found charter schools, of which Oakland has the most in the state of California, are responsible for the resegregation of public education, it should be stated that the Oakland School Board and OUSD (which never desegregated), currently planning to close 24 public schools over the next five years, is fully committed to a segregated majority charter school system. If successful, This will effectively put the private sector in control of "public education" below 580 in Oakland. Put simply, this is like yelling at the crooks who just stole all the Christmas presents for your kids to come back because they forgot to take the Christmas tree.

After thirty years of dealing with Oakland City Hall and the Bldg Dept., nothing here surprises me. I've seen that behavior more than once.

Re: “Towing for Dollars in Alameda

It's all in the family. His father, Wayne Russo, SR ripped off Oakland residents for years, with his company 2B Towed. His bread and butter was private property tows. He would notify the police and give them an incorrect license plate or VIN number. Often the victim would report the car stolen (because of the false info sent to the police). By the time the victim sorted things out, he's attempt to lien sale the car to himself or the victim would have to pay outrageous fees. Then Jr, started his career by simply replacing signs of Tow Company's with legitimate rights to tow in various parking lots, then he would start towing. Never did a property manager sign for the tows. His 'honey hole' for years was the Oakland Raider games, the old Pak N Save lot. He would tow cars by the dozens, as fast as he could. Victims would pay up to $500 to get the car out of his crooked facility on 105th. (Which burned, now he's down the street on San Leandro St) Next he moved on to one of the many restaurants that has occupied the space near the DMV on 85th Ave. His 'spies' would watch for people to park in the lot and walk to the DMV, then he would tow the cars quickly, most often when the restaurant was even open for business. Check with the city of Oakland, he towed thousands of cars, with dozens, if not hundreds of complaints. Now he's branched out all over the East Bay, but, he usually will exploit a 'honey hole' until it runs dry. It's about time he's paid back the hundreds (if not thousands) of people he's ripped off over the years.

Re: “Towing for Dollars in Alameda

This company took my car from an unmarked free parking spot when my complex had my vehicle information and the property manager had signed nothing. I paid for about two days worth of parking when my car was towed overnight on a Friday. This business is a joke.

Re: “Towing for Dollars in Alameda

The Better Business Bureau is a joke; don't waste your time on them. I'd recommend that each and every resident and guest, towed or not, all get together to file one combined class action 'suit against PPI, demand that the Alameda County District Att'y either file a friend of the court brief (amicus brief) siding with them or else be named in the 'suit, and the State Att'y Gen'l either file an amicus brief siding with them or be named in the 'suit, as well.

Re: “The East Bay's Tow Hustle

If anyone from the East Bay Express would like more details on my case, please let me know. Im happy to help these idiots lose their contract with OPD.

Re: “The East Bay's Tow Hustle

Auto Plus Towing illegally towed my car for not showing registration and it cost me $1300 to get it out of impound. When I picked it up, theyd concealed the fact that theyd driven a forklift into the passenger side, damaging the body and bending the frame. The manager on duty named Maria acknowledged that their driver admitted damaging my car and offered to part out some Volvos they had towed to repair the damage as long as I kept it between us. When I pointed out that theyd bent the frame and that I wouldnt let her part out other towed vehicles to repair mine, she then said Now that I think of it, this is pre-existing damage. Luckily, I had a witness who heard everything. Maria insinuated that the police report would be amended to show the pre-existing damage. I quickly filed a complaint with OPD and received a copy of the police report to make sure it wasnt altered.

To this day, APT wont respond to my official complaint against them. They are nothing but scumbag crooks.

Re: “The East Bay's Tow Hustle

how about the scam of getting your stolen car back ! my son"s car was stolen in Berkeley a few years ago Soon afterward he got a call from Richmond police that it had been found parked on a city street and we had 1 hour to get it. It was impossible to make in time took us 2 hours to get to Richmond police headquarters only to find that they had had the car towed. We got ripped off x2 once by the thief & again by the towing company for close to $400 (& his battery was stolen so we had to rush out to buy one so that extra fees would not be assessed for leaving the car overnight.) I wrote to the Richmond city council about the rip off & got a response from one of the council members who had similar outrage over the same type of event. She contacted me & had the incident recorded in The Contra Costa Times in a letter to the editor. What a scam!!

Re: “The East Bay's Tow Hustle

In the case of tow companies operating without proper licensure and permits, how does this not constitute grand theft auto and extortion? I'm not a lawyer and welcome input from those more educated than me in this area, but why can't the people who had their cars towed press criminal charges against either the company or the tow driver?

Re: “The East Bay's Tow Hustle

It's appears the ONLY illegalities are from the tow companies!!! These people all filed complaints and got their money returned.

Re: “The East Bay's Tow Hustle

you know what you are doing, I feel for those who get ripped off, But here's the THING WHY RISK IT, People park where it is clearly stated DO NOT PARK HERE YOU WILL BE TOWED. Unless you can't read, then it's on YOU. Ever been cussed out by letting someone know their car will be towed.
