Re: “Did Mike Fiers Save the A’s’ Season?

The author is a hopeful fan and I get that. However, here are the baseball facts about the 2019 Oakland A's that should temper any fanciful hopes about this season. First of all, Billy Beane did absolutely nothing in the off season to address the teams biggest weakness, that is the lack of starting pitching. Without Sean Manaea, Fyres is the only legitimate major league starter who can pitch into the 6th or 7th inning with any consistency. The other starters can be good every now and then, but are hit and miss pitchers who walk people and are constantly behind in the count. That means that many days, the A's will be behind in the score early in the game. One of the keys to last years success was the consistency of the bullpen, the A's ability to hold leads and to score consistently in the 7th inning or later. So far, none of those things are happening in 2019. The bullpen has been average at best. In fact, Blake Treinen has already blown at least 3 saves in the 8th or 9th inning. Several others who had success from the bullpen last year seem to have lost their mojo during the off season. Secondly, former second basemen Jed Lowrie always started the season hot and usually carried the team until at least June. His replacement (Jurickson Profar), hit about .125 until about 2 weeks ago . He has been hot lately and with the addition of the previously injured Matt Olsen, the ability to score runs should improve. With that being said, the Astros are still the cream of the AL west and the Mariners are very good. The A's can compete with the average teams in the league, but when they play the top tier teams (Red Sox, Astros, Yankees, Mariners) they will struggle without quality starting pitching. The best they can hope for this year is to be around .500.

Re: “Raiders ‘Global’ Brand Is a Myth

Sour grapes AF ,Raidernation wont die it will multiply, your article is very bias ,do you really read what you write?
Raiders brand is Global whether you believe it or not. The greatness of the Raiders is in its future and the future is Vegas, stop hating is actually bad for your health.

Re: “Raiders ‘Global’ Brand Is a Myth

Well, @donna Glover, you're exactly the kinda gal I wear my plunkett Jersey for! Plus, without that bull tuck rule, we'd have what the pats got for the last 17 years. Just like the immaculate reception; the league hated Al, and found ways to keep the raiduhs down as punishment. Enjoy your shamefully overhyped franchise.

Re: “Raiders ‘Global’ Brand Is a Myth

I don't care if they play in Madagascar, and never win another game in the existence of the NFL. I'll still bleed silver and black, and so will my kids, and their kids and so on. F the boys, pats & their stats, and lame ass Dan fouts!

Re: “Raiders ‘Global’ Brand Is a Myth

Wow sour grapes indeed. You can go on and on about the Raiders and the Davis family but maybe you should ask yourself why the worthless Mayor Of Oakland Libby Schaff did absolutely nothing before the Las Vegas deal was on the table. Noooooo! she was too busy putting out Amber Alerts for the illegal aliens and kissing their butts while all the money went right out the door. When the Sacramento Kings were about to leave town Mayor Kevin Johnson showed real leadership and got in the middle of things. Libby Schaff did absolutely nothing! So while you are eager to put the Raider Organization down maybe you should point the finger in her direction also. Dont really care about your sour grapes! RAIDER NATION ALIVE AND WELL!

Re: “Raiders ‘Global’ Brand Is a Myth

@Donna Glover the raiders have 3 Super Bowl wins the bears only have one. They tried to build a stadium in Oakland but the damn politicians and the athletics prevented them from doing it. The athletic dont even want to be in Oakland they want to move to San Jose but the mlb dont let them, theyre pretty much stuck in Oakland. Stop being the psycho ex girlfriend who cant stand seeing the other succeed in life. Whether you accept it or not the raiders will dominate once again. Raider Nation for life Just Win Baby

Re: “Raiders ‘Global’ Brand Is a Myth

Time will tell whether the Raiders will succeed in Vegas. Im done after 45 years of being a supporter though. Raider Nation has always been corny to me, and will be put to the test. A weekend in Vegas will cost what my season tickets do.

Interestingly, Jason Cole reported that Davis agreed to defend and indemnify the NFL and the other 31 clubs in any litigation arising out of the move. Im having trouble believing theyd be that stupid, frankly, but you never know. Each club and the league will hire the most expensive lawyers in town, nevermind any potential verdict following an astronomically expensive jury trial, if it gets that far, and Davis will pay for it all, if the report is true.

At the end of the day, if youre not proud of being from Oakland, and they are the only home grown franchise, they should leave and never mention the word Oakland again. The only upside of the move has been how it has revealed so many Raider fans that travel to and tailgate in Oakland, who actually hate the city. Funny how they never mentioned that before.

Re: “Raiders ‘Global’ Brand Is a Myth

Oakland native, daughter of a season ticket holder pre-move to LA, I hate the Raiders organization. Al Davis' legacy lives on. He treated his host city, Oakland like garbage and could care less about the fans. I never wanted the Raiders to come back, when they did, they crapped over the Athletics who held down the ballpark for 15 years alone. Only to have it ruined by the construction-obstruction of Mt. Davis that even the Raiders do not use. Laugh all you want, this Oakland gal is a Patriots fan. How many Super Bowls have the Raiders won? Steelers, Cowboys, 49'ers, Pats, Bears all have dynasties. Raider have hype.

Re: “Raiders ‘Global’ Brand Is a Myth

You clearly haven't spent any time out of the east bay. The Raiders could move to San Diego and sell out the Q every game. They have huge fan bases and they will travel once the Raiders play in a real stadium. I travel up to the Coli 8 times a year and and I can't wait to go to Vegas. I was born in the east bay and the Coli is an embarrassment. They've lost the Warriors & the Raiders, and the A's will be gone soon too. Nothing is ever getting built with the joke that is the city & the county.

Re: “Raiders ‘Global’ Brand Is a Myth

Like his big brother in the White House (Trump), Mark Davis is wrong on every single issue. It must be the tan and the hair. Davis forgets that the main thing that built and cultivated the Raider mystique was WINNING. When Al moved the Raiders to LA in 1985, they were arguably the most successful franchise in all of sports over the previous 20 years. In the last 20 years, they are among the least successful franchises in sports. The Raiders arrived in LA about the same time as gangster rap hit the music scene and their colors became part of that genre. However, fan attendance in LA is always dependent upon what else is going on that day. LA folks support three sports franchises, the Dodgers, the Lakers and USC football. Beyond that, they will turn out if it is the place to be at the hot game of the week, but if not, there are plenty other things to do. Las Vegas is a pipe dream and one of the shakiest set of financial assumptions ever compiled to justify moving a professional sports team and building a stadium. Approval of this charade by NFL owners reflects their greedy desire to collectively be involved in on line gaming. It was Jerry Jones, not Mark Davis who sold this Raider move to Las Vegas to the other NFL owners. Jones and Robert Kraft (New England) already have millions invested in this growing industry and the other owners want a piece of the action. At the end of the day, if you live foul, the universe will not reward you. Mark Davis is very foul and delusional. His arrogance and stupidity dooms him to many more years of losing seasons in Vegas. Nobody deserves it more than him. He and his sorry franchise cannot leave town fast enough. Asta la vista baby!

Re: “Raiders ‘Global’ Brand Is a Myth

Stop taking down my comments because you dont want the writers feelings to be hurt. Improve the quality by writing about a team you are objective about. Even if it wasnt intentional its blatant sour grapes. Try again, seriously.

Re: “Raiders ‘Global’ Brand Is a Myth

You should write about a team you are objective about. Sour grapes article. Obvious the fan in you is hurting and wants the team to fail. Of course the rating in media arent very good rn theyve been losing for years . Give me an article that isnt filled with shots at the team because the writer is crying about their move. We get it. I couldnt even read the second half of page 2 as it was so clearly written by someone who is upset about their relocation.

Re: “Raiders ‘Global’ Brand Is a Myth

Lol talk about butt hurt. Of course the ratings arent as high as those teams. Those teams all made the playoffs this year. This article just comes off as sour grapes honestly. Didnt even bother reading the second half of page 2 as it was clearly written by someone who wants to see the raiders fail after they move. Write about a team you are objective about.

Re: “Get Your Money, Murray

"By todays standards, it was fairly mild stuff"

Bruce Maxwell ordered food delivered then, while drunk, pointed a gun in the face of the woman who delivered it. That is not mild stuff by any standards. It is abhorrent and I am glad he's gone.

He proceeded to slash ,219/.300/.281 in AAA last year, so in addition, he sucks. Love the anthem stance though.

Re: “Get Your Money, Murray

I too applaud Kyler Murray for playing the leverage game to his maximum advantage. Far too often it is the MLB and NFL owners who have the players over a barrel in contract negotiations. I have no personal preference for which sport he should pursue. The kid should do what will make him happy. There is no doubt that baseball offers a longer and healthier career. However, there is no guarantee he will make it to the majors to make the big money. See Michael Jordan and Tim Tebow. A quarterback signed in the first round normally receives a big pay check right away and some guaranteed money. With all that being said, A's fans should not fooled by all the media attention around Kyler Murray. From a baseball tool perspective, he is not Bo Jackson or even Deon Sanders. Murray at maybe 5-10, will at best be a .300 hitting 2nd baseman who can steal bases and score runs. He will not be hitting the ball 500 feet and driving in 125 runs a year. For that reason, I don't think the A's should spend any more money on Murray. Players like him are not one of a kind. What they should be doing is addressing the starting pitching problem. After signing Kris Davis to a one year contract reflective of his talent and production, starting pitching is their biggest weakness. I agree that losing Lucroy at the catching position will be a down grade this year. He provided a solid every day presence behind the plate. Given the transient nature of the starting pitching staff, a solid veteran catcher is a must for a team like the A's. At the end of the day, in my opinion, Billy Beane should be replaced. He is not the guy with the vision and influence with other teams to get the A's to the next level. If the goal is to be competitive every year and go home early in September, he has clearly shown that he can do that. If the A's want to beat teams like the Yankees, Red Sox and Astro's in the playoffs, they need to spend more money to build up the talent on the roster. In addition, hire a bright young gun in that general manager position who can wheel and deal with teams with undiscovered talent. The Billy Ball days brought no championships and are way over.

Re: “A’s Swing for the Fences at Howard Terminal

Time for 25% of all those new condos to belong to the currently homeless. I don't see why the top floors wouldn't do. Building monuments to materialistic inequality is irritating and backwards. We demand that housing the homeless be a priority and will monkey wrench any plans that do not include the homeless. I fully support verticality and the parking can be worked out. See New York City or any other large City. It's funny how the Yuppy Nimby anti-verticality people act like it has never been done SUCCESSFULLY before. Homeless are the first priority though as they are who are most in need.

What he said.

The transportation issues alone are likely overwhelming. Put the money into the Coliseum site, both sides of the freeway.

Re: “A’s Swing for the Fences at Howard Terminal

I've been saying for decades now that the A's should move to the waterfront, just like the Giants did in SF. Jack London Square and the environs will be transformed, the stadium will be beautiful, and fans will love to go see the A's...that is, if Billy Beane will stop compulsively getting rid of players every week or so!
