Drama
Three evocative actors – Michael Shannon, Andrew Garfield, and Laura Dern – relay the message of filmmaker Ramin Bahrani’s topical melodrama in no uncertain terms. It’s a dog eat dog world, as stressed-out, hoodwinked Florida construction worker Garfield, along with his mother Dern, get evicted from their Orlando home by unscrupulous real estate broker Shannon, circa 2011. As usual, Shannon steals every scene he’s in. His shark-like would-be empire builder Rick Carver looks like an escapee from Michael Moore’s Capitalism: A Love Story, and if the three actors’ eloquence lifts the social-protest story to heights it probably doesn’t deserve, we at least get to hiss the villain and bemoan the fate of the poor, unlucky family. Screenplay by director Bahrani and Amir Naderi, from a story by Bahrani and Bahereh Azimi (112 min.)
