8:13 p.m. Thursday: Best Escape to Another Time and Place

KC's B-B-Que

KC's is an old-time Arkansas-style soul food restaurant with lots of "way back in the day" ambiance. What makes it special is its natural easygoing family feel. The tables, chairs, and dinnerware are a mixed collection of unmatched sets that insist you let your hair down and relax. While you're waiting for your order, wander round the dining room and check out the antique photographs, paintings, and memorabilia of African-American family life from fifty to a hundred years ago. KC's is decorated with antique washstands and ancient Victrolas. Flip through the magazines and examine the knickknacks that go way back in the day (including politically incorrect Little Black Sambo ceramic tchotchkes). Before you know it you'll pleasantly find yourself in another time and place. Proprietor Pat Davis has been serving the neighborhood since 1965, so you know this is the real deal and not some art-directed re-creation. The food is sweeter and fruitier and not as spicy as most East Bay barbecue fans have learned to expect. Try the links: they're good and they're homemade right there.
